In a previous video we looked at how it was possible to receive images directly off of weather satellites as they pass overhead. In this video we look at the last steps of that process and how we can convert our audio recordings into beautiful images of the earth.For the purposes of this video, we only use tools that have a gui. The programs we'll use are:
Audacity: www.audacitytea...
WXtoIMG: wxtoimgrestore...
LRPTrx: www.dropbox.co...
LRPTofflinedecoder: 185.26.115.106/

Rest in peace Meteor-M N2-2, got hit by a meteor and lost heat transferring gas. It wasn't even in space for two years after this video came out and just months after launch, severely damaged. It still powers up when it can get solar panels but its batteries were massively reduced in capacity from the temperature fluctuations. It still broadcasts at 1.7 and 8GHz, but no longer at 137MHz

@tatzecom
@tatzecom 4 жыл бұрын
Using a satellite dish isnt a good use case for this scenario. You want an omnidirectional antenna for this since the satellite orbits at just 300km or so The satellite dish comes in handy if you want to build a radio telescope or if you want to pull data from a geo-synchronos satellite like GOES-16 that The Thought Emporium also made a video about I know im kinda 3 months late to the party, but i still hope I could help you with this ^^

@j69chevelle
@j69chevelle 7 жыл бұрын
That works for NOAA APT but LRPT still needs to use the additional plugins and software.
@seraphina985
@seraphina985 3 жыл бұрын
@@j69chevelle This is always going to be something of an issue with digital signals you have a wave that has been modulated into a radio wave somehow but then needs to be interpreted via some algorithm. Even after demodulating it is about as much use as reading the 8 trillion bit long number from a full 1 TB hard drive in pure raw it is utter nonsense until you figure out what numbers should be put through what algorithms. There is a reason why we need so much metadata encoded into digital storage devices after all the computer needs to know which function to pass the read number to in order to produce something remotely helpful.

Why not use a dish?
@thethoughtemporium
@thethoughtemporium 6 жыл бұрын
Makes it too hard to track the satellites without a motorized mount. Much easier to just make a double cross antenna and hold still. Signal comes in just fine and there's less to break

I was wondering what soft of stuff comes down from the European satellites myself... If you find out, let us know. Of course, NOAA and Meteosat satellites are polar-orbiting, so they cover the whole world anyway.

When the satellite takes another picture, does it just interrupt it's previous transmission? I'm asking this because I was wondering if it is possible for you to be halfway through your recording and then the satellite changes the image it's broadcasting and your recording gets messed up.

No, it only sends out full images. If you catch the full image or not however is your problem.

NOAA provides a continuous image strip, but the satellite does change its sensor at certain times. You'll know when this occurs by the right strip inverting color.

Do people really care about the weather? Never in my life have I ever look at a weather forecast... I just move my head up look at the sky / clouds and dress appropriately.
@thethoughtemporium

Try living in florida. Satellites like this allow people to know in advance when a hurricane is on the way and to act accordingly. They quite literally save lives. Also they let us collect data about the goings on of our planet. And as someone who's hobbies and work is greatly affected by the weather, knowing what to expect in advance is extremely important. So, yes.
@Evan1527
@Evan1527 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah I imagine there's people in the world that are benefited from this data but like you said for prevention / science scenarios like hurricanes, tropical storms, sand, volcanoes, etc. and data recompilation for temperature of air currents or something like that for global warming... but I still don't see the immediate impact on the regular human, I don't see the importance of putting weather forecast everywhere like on the smartphone home screen, computer screen, smart tv menu.... I mean if there's a storm coming i'll hear about it on the news but on a regular day... looking at the sky is more than enough. Still cool project tho.

@@Evan1527, I'm really wondering about this and saying to myself why we waste time making things that can be known or easy to find, and I think this is a dilemma in mind !! So the answer is more logical when you think about how the Internet was created or satellite stations or antibiotic to find it was discovered through experiments and coincidence, which makes these projects the center of scientific innovation, not knowing what to discover when working on something.

@@monicao4477 Having your own beliefs is acceptable (respectable even). But talking scientific stuff without even understanding the basics is simply moronic. - A reflected signal would have greater phase shift (Doppler shift) than a real satellite signal. - The signals we're receiving from your _"imaginary satellites"_ are moving. So, are you suggesting that there are ground emitters that travel with ~60K km/h?! (Note: the fastest recorded *air* travel is from NASA's X-43 that achieved 10.5K km/h.) - The satellites operate at high frequencies (of the GHz range) that, combined with the almost vertical transmission angles (5°~10°), make them immune to tropospheric and ionospheric disturbances. - & there are many more *scientific* facts that I could present, but at this point I'm starting to feel that it's pointless...
