The UK is in recession apparently, so I paid DK Motorcycles a visit to see if the current econimical climate was having any effect on the prices of the classic bikes there. Buy me a coffee! www.buymeacoffee.com/derekswo...

Your buying nostalgia. The British bikes of the 50's and 60's have fallen in price as that generation dies out. Now bring in the guys now in their 60's who grew up on 70's bikes with their houses paid for, a good pension and money in the bank. Older prestige bikes will always command a decent price, Vincent, Goldstar etc, but even a 1968 Triumph Bonnie has dropped in price compared to 15 years ago. UK economic problems? Not for people like me. Hence I have a 70's 2 stroke. The same will happen when we die.. 90's and 2000's bikes will be in demand. Although I feel slightly less so considering the younger people today are less likely to be bought up riding motorcycles and opt for a stepping stone before getting a car, such as electric bikes or scooters. I don't see the passion in today's generation for motorcycles as was in the past. With regards to pricing the market always decides. Dealers obviously inflate these. Plus some people will feel their bike is worth X amount. In reality I've followed some sales of private bikes that sit for months with no sale. As for people who buy as an investment the reasoning behind this escapes me. Unless you bought 30 years ago there is very little profit to be had. Buy, ride and enjoy before you eventually kick the bucket.
@derekb27654 ай бұрын
Thank you for the very comprehensive comments 👍 I think classic bikes can be bought as an investment, if one chooses wisely. Certain prestige bikes will always command strong residuals, the values of others will rise and fall depending on what's the flavour of the month!

@derekb2765 true, but can be as tricky as other markets such as art, stock markets, property, cars etc...plenty have caught a cold , even top banking institutions. To make serious cash you have to risks. Let's call it market speculation. To buy and take that risk you must be prepared to also lose money. A Kawasaki Z1 bought 20 years ago could possibly make you 10k profit , but is this a lot of money considering it could have been a gamble? Buy an MV Agusta back in the 70's, which is now worth a lot, still would have been shelling out an incredible amount of money at the time. Flipping motorcycles is nothing new...making a successful business out of it requires deep pockets and a lot of luck...and maybe a crystal ball 🤔 😉 😀

it's not the buying of the bike , many will need spares to restore and keep them running, I provisionally bought a Yamaha DT 175, but it needed a clutch part, seems it was a problem originally, their is none left, the only way to get the part was a company in the USA that was making them, with the cost of making and the import duty I walked away from it. you need to think before you buy.

Excellent video Derek, very informative, I have 3 seventies two strokes and enjoy them immensely, can't say I'm concerned about prices rising or falling as I bought them for the pleasure of restoring and riding.
@derekb27654 ай бұрын
I bought mine for the same reasons as you, but also with half an eye on their values. Hopefully I can at least get back what I've paid out for my bikes, although that will be unlikely with my S2A and CB750. 😊
@paulcooper56104 ай бұрын
Can't believe the prices of the 2 strokes still, I guess I wasn't lucky enough or just didn't maintain them well enough to of ever owned a good one back in the 70's and 80's, mine all went bang. So I'm one of the few who has no interest in them at all, at any price, I'm much happier with a good reliable 4 stroke and even then I prefer to buy something simple to maintain like a single or a twin cylinder bike. My classic of choice is a CX500, simple to maintain and good enough performance for modern day use, they are also cheap to buy and loads of spares still available as they made them in large numbers back in the day. I must try to get up to DK when the weather improves as I love looking at Japanese classics. Thanks for the video.
@derekb27654 ай бұрын
I agree, the prices of some of the 2-strokes are through the roof. Maybe the fact that a lot of them went BANG is the reason for their rarity! 😉

Great video again, Derek. I visited DK on my way back from the Stafford show in October. I bought my CB360 from them, but wish I had gone to look at it before I bought it. They didn't say anything about the rotten exhausts and that it ran on only one cylinder! Why do Americans run a bike, and then leave it lying for years?
@derekb27654 ай бұрын
Did you just buy the CB after seeing pictures of it on eBay? Some people vow to fix their old bikes, but never get round to it. 😬
@alistairshaw32064 ай бұрын
@derekb2765 Yes, I did ,silly me! It only had 4500 miles on the clock but must've been lying in damp storage for many years. It came from Wyoming. The piston rings were seized into the piston on one cylinder. It's running well now, but I spent a fortune on it!
@derekb27654 ай бұрын
Not silly at all. That's how I bought my S2A during covid. I used my engineering judgement from the photos and took the chance. The bike was worse than I'd expected, but I'd anticipated that👍🏿 You can be proud of yourself for bringing another one back from the dead! 😃
@medler21104 ай бұрын
You find many bikes in the UK that have sat in a garage, shed or barn for decades, I've just finished restoring one I put in a barn in 2000, after it had engine problems, I fully intended to do it up long ago, but time, money and lack of any where to work stopped me, but I didn't want to sell it as I bought it in 1984 and then did a load of modifications, the longer it sits here the more life gets in the way and less likely it is to happen. Having done that bike I'm doing up a GPZ900, that had sat in a garage for 18 years, as the owner said, he meant to get it done, but mortgage, children, took up his money and time. I know it also happens with cars, even busses and trucks, but bikes are easier to put aside in a garage and forget than cars, as they don't take as much space. I did notice a load of bikes that had been stored come on the market just after Covid, I think people were at home, so "tidied" up and also were looking for room for an office so they could work from home.

All very nice, and if you have deep pockets, go for it. But, as others have commented, maintaining some of these machines can cost a small fortune. Parts sellers have sussed that certain parts are unavailable and hike prices accordingly. I know of someone who recently spent thousands of pounds and may hours getting his dream bike together, only to realise that it wasn’t quite the bike he remembered from his youth. After calculating his time sourcing parts, getting parts plated, putting it all together etc…. He was shocked at how much time and effort it cost him. He sold it on at a loss and got himself an MT-07 Yammie, which he really likes. Oh, BTW, as much as I love these classics (owned a few back in the day) The ride, handling, braking etc are no match for a lot of bikes built from the 90’s. The Japanese really started to get their act together by then. Peace✌️
@derekb27654 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comprehensive comment. 👍 I think it just depends on what you want from motorcycling. 🤔 I enjoy both classic and modern bikes, but for different reasons. E.g. I enjoy the challenge of getting (and keeping!) my classic bikes running properly, but then I'm glad I also have a modern bike that I know will start on the button and get me to where I'm going! 😃 Regarding the cost of restoring or maintaining classics, I'll never get back the man hours I've put into mine, but I don't look at it as a loss, as it's my hobby, and has helped me grow as a person. 😃

Nice video thanks Derek. As others have said, the real issue in the medium term is one of demographics, ie the people interested in the bikes you show here are probably now in their 60s. Guys in their 50s and younger will have no connection with anything you have shown here. Thus the only way is down, for these prices in the long term. Not an issue though if you buy something because you love it.

When they were sold, even as standard, new owners had to sign a declaration of no warranty claims for engine problems. The engines were moderately safe for 'normal usage' but dodgy for continual overenthusiastic launches. They were all but guaranteed crank twisters if the boost was increased, the result being valve/piston carnage. A pal raced a highly tuned Z1000 in a Harris frame and even that had a welded up crankshaft to be able to cope with the extra poke from using a high octane fuel and a massive compression ratio.@@derekb2765
@124SpecialT4 ай бұрын
The big Z’s run a pressed up crank that can twist when given a lot of boost. Tuners recommend welding the pins to the webs and once that’s done they will take insane amounts of abuse.
@derekb27654 ай бұрын
Why weren't they engineered with an uprated crank as standard? 🤔 Probably a cost issue I imagine, given the low volumes.
