I was in the US Navy from 1985 - 1995 . My rating was Operations Specialist ( radar , navigation, and communications ) . I sailed four years on a Guided Missile Destroyer , served two years as an MP on shore duty , then sailed four years on a Guided Missile Cruiser . My first ship sailed with the USS Forrestal ( now decommissioned ) Battle Group during a Mediterranean Deployment . My MP unit protected the USS Midway ( now decommissioned) and the USS Independence when they were forward deployed in Yokosuka Japan . The CG I sailed on was a part of the USS Carl Vinson Battle Group during a WESTPAC and a Deployment to the Persian Gulf . One of terms we used to designate the aircraft carriers we defended was FID , meaning First In Defense . We were expected to put our vessel and our bodies before any threat to the carrier .

Zachery Martin is spot on in the "chain of command" great question tho- The Navy is different in many ways from Army- Air Force in ways that confuse others. The Marines are a department of the Navy, so they are under the Admirals command also.

A ship, like a base, will have several commands each with a captain. The Captain is also the title held even if the person holding it is of another rank. In this case the base or ship commander/captain acts somewhat like an admiral as well. The chain of command is an effective tool.

In 2005 the ‘USS Ronald Reagan’ was taking part in war games, The Swedish submarine ‘Gotland’ infiltrated the carrier group undetected. She simulated the firing of several torpedoes some of which were aimed at the carrier. Having successfully carrying out her attack she surfaced in the middle of the carrier group much to the surprise of the protective screen defending the carrier. The US Navy borrowed the sub for 2 years in order to try and develop countermeasures.
@audiolaudio8965

... very good, very good, ... the Swedish submarine ‘Gotland’ served the purpose for which it was included in that exercise ... to detect, to uncover unforeseen weaknesses in that strike-force armada such that countermeasures for that weakness would be developed and put in place. The purpose for its inclusion in the exercise was NOT to detract from the purpose of the strike-force but to strengthen it ... much to the dismay of its detractors ...

@@audiolaudio8965 yup not to mention such simulations can rarely fully simulate lifelike conditions and have restrictions in place one way or another. Not to mention even among allies there is things each country might hold back and not show even more so given the Swedish forces at that time weren't fully part of NATO.

I don't know if that's true now, but I once heard that if the commander of an aircraft carrier wanted to inspect every room on his ship and needed a look of about 5 minutes for each room, it would take him about a year. Only when you really see such a ship in front of you can you roughly guess how big these carriers are. But how big they are inside... you can't even begin to guess...

Unfortunately the Gerald R. Ford class is still having problems with the electromagnetic catapult. One US Admiral said it was a good idea, but it was implemented too soon without having enough development time beforehand. The older nuclear Carriers were easier to work with having less complex steam catapults.

The US is the only navy in the world that has Hospital Ships, the USS Mercy and the USS Comfort. Its actually interesting because as much as a carrier strike group acts as gunboat diplomacy, they also help in disasters. With aircraft carriers being literal mobile airfields, they can help in disaster relief by getting supplies in quickly and dispatching search and rescue directly from their flight deck. They also can provide water and shelter to thousands due to the nuclear rectors and desalination plants on board the carriers.

The exercise that is depicted in this documentary is RIMPAC 2014. That was one of the years that the PLAN was invited to send ships. The radar plane you wondered about was exactly that...it was an E-2C Hawkeye Airborne Early Warning plane...or possibly the updated version that was coming into service in 2014, the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye.

By the way...HMS Victory, Admiral Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar, was built in 1765. She is now the oldest ship in the Royal Navy. She is enlisted on the Royal Navy's list of active warships, has her own crew and commander. It serves representative purposes and is used by the Ministry of Navy for official events and receptions, among other things. She is also the flagship of the First Sea Lord of the Admiralty. The Victory can still be viewed in Portsmouth. It is located in the Historic Dockyards in a dry dock and is completely accessible from the keelson to the upper deck - only the admiralty mess and captain's cabin can only be visited through a small passage. (excerpt from Wikipedia) Her full story can be found here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Victory

The film footage at 15:40 is not from the Battle of Jutland, but rather the Austrian battleship St. Stephan, sunk in the Mediterranean in June 1918 by an Italian torpedo. Most of the sailors survived; they were required to know how to swim before enlisting in the Austrian navy, and because it took so long to sink there were other Austrian ships on hand to rescue survivors. It is one of only two battleships ever filmed sinking on the high seas. The other one is the British HMS Barham, in WWII.

The aircraft you mention at 20:12 is AWACS, the naval version is called the Hawkeye. Once launched, it's the navy's eyes in the sky. It provides real-time satellite telemetry uplink to all allied aircraft in the area. What it sees and detects is communicated to the entire fleet. It even keeps an eye on enemy aircraft and ship movements. This gives allied commanders a real-time image of the theater of operations.

Probably noted by now: The Ronald Reagan was "sunk" by the HSwMS Gotland sub in training exercises near San Diego. Gotland evaded US anti-sub and approached the Reagan undetected. It exercise "fired" a sufficient number of torpedos to sink the carrier and then left the exercise area still undetected. Sank other US ships also and the US navy was never able to detect it.

When I was on the Ticonderoga our supply ship, the Sacramento, lost steering and turned to port. We had to do an emergency breakaway. A couple of guys were hurt. Since one had a severe head wound I had to go up to supervise his placing on the stretcher and taking down to Medical. We worked on him all night. At 3 AM I looked at Comander Watts he said is he dead? We could get a heartbeat we were doing heart massage the whole time. I said " fuck it bag him he's dead". Three days later a mess cook that was stealing us some ice cream came up as white as a sheet. He said "I ain't going back down there, there's a heart beat coming out of one of those bags". I have always wondered if we sent a live body home in a body bag. One of several reasons I have PTSD.

IM STILL HERE RECKY! CGI much better than the last video I watched of yours! I think that big propeller plane is a communication hub for everyone and its an early warning system. It can see a threat faster than the radar on the aircraft carrier and let everyone know what's about to come. Think of it as an advanced crow's nest on a pirate ship.

I was on the USS Ticonderoga CVA14 and the USS Midway CVA41. The Midway had to remove 10ft of her mast to fit under the Golden Gate Bridge.

Stayed for the whole part 1. On to part 2! This was a great educational video without getting so complex that regular people can't understand it! I love to learn, but don't want to have to look something up every 2 seconds to understand it!

The Captain is the commander of the ship. The Admiral is the commander of ALL the ships (US at least). Typically, a strike group. Each ship will have a Captain (which is NOT necessarily a Captain by rank, but rather a title), and a strike group commander, which is the Admiral. In the case of this video, with a multinational force, I'm not sure how far the Admirals authority extends. For overall operation, yes. For individual stuff, no. But where that line is, I'm not sure.

The Admiral has tactical command of his task force, but has no command authority over an individual ship. The captain, as commander of the ship, has command authority over his ship and is available to the task force commander in an advisory capacity. In addition, each admiral has his own staff of officers and non-commissioned officers to assist him. This is the only way he is able to carry out his command. As a task force commander, he is also subordinate to a higher command, such as CincPac or the Atlantic Command, these are subordinate to the Chief of Naval Operations, etc.

What is so neat is the carrier has it's own zip code. That means if your from another country and land on this ship you landed in the United States of America.

For this the reaction to this video, I'll watch all the way to the end. You're something like the 7th non-US based reactor I've watched the reaction to this video, after I first viewed it. (This is one of the best documentary videos available on CVN-76/USS Ronald Regan.)

When I was on the Ticonderoga; we crossed the Pacific, Japan to San Diego in a little less than 3 days. We went the polar route (it's shortest) Wr were doing 33 knots the whole time. Crap would fall off shelves from the vibration.
