On May 13, 1985, police surrounded the home of MOVE, a radical Black liberation organization that was defying orders to vacate from 6221 Osage Avenue in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Police flooded the home with water, filled it with tear gas, blasted it with automatic weapons, and finally dropped a bomb on the house from a helicopter, setting it ablaze and killing 11 residents - six adults and five children. The fire ultimately burned the entire city block to the ground, destroying over 60 homes. We speak with second-generation MOVE member Mike Africa Jr., who has launched a “Reclaim Osage” campaign to repurchase the bombed MOVE house after the city previously used eminent domain to seize it and turn it into a police substation before selling it to developers.

On March 3, 1910, a 59-year-old Black handyman named Allen Brooks was lynched by a white mob. Mr. Brooks was accused-without evidence-of assaulting his white employer's daughter. Devils punchbowl When 20000 freed blacks died after being forced into post-slavery concentration camps in the south Eugenics movement of the 1920s-30s Which has killed over 20 million people How Interstate Highways Gutted Communities-and Reinforced Segregation America's interstate highway system cut through the heart of dozens of urban neighborhoods. When Congress approved the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 The law promised to construct 41,000 miles of an ambitious interstate highway system Its goal was to eliminate unsafe roads, inefficient routes and traffic jams that impede fast and safe cross-country travel. President Dwight Eisenhower called the massive infrastructure project “essential to the national interest.” But the highway expansion, implemented largely between the late 1950s and the early 1970s, came at a huge cost to America’s urban communities of color. According to estimates from the U.S. Department of Transportation, more than 475,000 households and more than a million people were displaced nationwide because of the federal roadway construction. Hulking highways cut through neighborhoods, darkened and disrupted the pedestrian landscape, worsened air quality and torpedoed property values. Communities lost churches, green space and whole swaths of homes. They also lost small businesses that provided jobs and kept money circulating locally-crucial middle-class footholds in areas already struggling from racist zoning policies, disinvestment and white flight. The neighborhoods destroyed and families uprooted by highway projects were largely Black and poor, wrote New York University law professor Deborah N. Archer in her article “White Men’s Roads Through Black Men’s Homes At the beginning of the 20th century, African Americans owned at least 14 million acres of land. By the 21st century, 90 percent of the land had been stolen from them. Now, African Americans only own 1.1 million acres of farmland and are part owners of another 1.07 million acres. Across a century, white farmers and landowners developed multiple ways to take African Americans’ land, using methods such as heirs property, tax sales, and Torrens Acts.

@@sfeeges "This family terrorised their neighbours. They boarded up their house, used loud speakers with a microphone so residents couldn't sleep. Threatened to kill families on the street, they named specific families, not just random, vague threats. They caused a bug infestation in the whole street by leaving raw meat outside their house in buckets. The neighbours wanted to use sulphur to get rid of the bug problem but this family said, "The bugs are our brothers and sister. If you exterminate the bugs, you exterminate us." They said that if they attempted to get rid of the bugs in their own homes, they'd have their doors kicked in and they'd be "the first to go". The residents say they couldn't leave their homes, their kids couldn't play outside. The group were pulling guns out and always causing fights. The kids in this house were going through the bins to find food. Their neighbours started hiding food in the bins for them but the adults found out and became aggressive. The residents on the street all wanted them to go. They saw it as an "us or them" situation and they didn't care how they were dealt with, either incarceration or a shoot out. One resident said, "they were a group trying to create social change but their methods were destructive and they came to a destructive end.""

@@NeoDon1 : Black women and men, low incoime, are deliberately targeted to induce hatred towards themselves and one another. Philadelphia's roots are deep roots, going back to 1776, with the creation of and signing of the Declaration of Independence (male only, white only). That said, Philadelphia retains its place in the "birth" of America where all people are born equal ... this still reverberates throughout the world, and not just Philly. Brotherly love is necessary now more than ever. Massive changes are coming economically - banks crashing worldwide - and in the climate - GRAND SOLAR MINIMUM (to put it simply, :global cooling," in many areas north of the Equator, getting hotter south of the Equator). Crop loss is occuring worldwide. Many in cities will NOT be able to afford fresh vegetables and fruit. What does this have to do with "brotherly love?" United we stand or divided we fall. Either we help each other get through the stagering upheaval about to take place, and unite in brotherly love, or we fall. Those who unite will stand a better chance of surviving the lack of food, hygiene and sanitation issues about to develop on a mass scale. Moving out of cities and going to the countryside will benefit those who do that; those who stay in cities are doomed to intense chaos and extreme lack of food... TPTB know this, so ... Why were cities created? Ah ... and why were blacks encouraged/coralled into cities decades ago? And here we are in 2023 .... sisterly love/brotherly love or bust!

They should get the house back for free. That should be a new rule: If your house gets bombed by the government and you are not an immediate threat to the national security of the United States itself, you get your property back, a blank check for whatever damage the government caused plus emotional suffering, and an apology. Even the most racist neonazi should be able to say, "gee, maybe those poor black people shouldn't have been bombed like they were Osama Bin Laden", let alone anyone even slightly impartial like the government SHOULD be. This tragedy needs to be taught in every school, with the emphasis that this wasn't during Harriet Tubman's time, or even MLK's time. Mike Africa Jr. seems like a level-headed guy and I give him credit for trying to seek some sort of justice. Some of the people who read this comment were alive in an era where our own government bombed poor civilians in our own country. This is OLD news, but goes to show how little most people know about American history, myself included until I learned about it. Another big eye opener for me was learning about the Tulsa race massacre. When you learn about the Black experience in America, you begin to really see how racist it is. This racism even spilled over to Europe during WWII where Black soldiers were still subject to segregation. Racist White soldiers actually got in fights with British allies for allowing Black soldiers to drink at the same pubs.

Not being an American, I have been very much aware of this for decades. It is one reason why I decided I would _never_ travel to the US. Two others are called Leonard Peltier and Mumia Abu-Jamal. Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo Bay, the CIA's kidnapping of a harmless Egyptian citizen in Italy and of a harmless German citizen at a South-East European border, the Collateral Murder video followed by no consequences for the killers but a harsh sentence for the whistleblower and insane prosecution of a journalist, the drone killings -- all these shameless state crimes came afterwards and just confirmed that this was the right decision.

@@stonehengemaca Some crimes are so atrocious that you don't have to look into the motives. The authorities cannot drop bombs on houses to kill everyone in them. That would be true even with homicidal maniacs inside and no children. There is absolutely no excuse for that, no matter what some of the people inside may or may not have done. Maybe if they were remote controlling nuclear bombs from inside or something. Come to think of it, bombing the building on Ramstein Airbase from which the US has been killing hundreds of civilians by drone in various countries, including many women and children, would probably be justified. But there is no indication that anything like this was going on in Philadelphia. This wasn't a law enforcement operation. It wasn't even a punitive expedition by slavers. It was pest control. They dehumanized their victims 100%, just like the Nazis did with Jews and some other groups such as Roma.

This family threatened to kick in doors and murder families that tried to combat the bug infestation they caused on the street. Saying the bugs were their brothers and sisters. Another substantial case for reparations!
@SconnerStudios
@SconnerStudios Жыл бұрын
I have a problem with the idea of reparations to a specific race of people, no matter if it justified or not. The left needs to start learning the mind games the right plays. Instead of reparations for a specific race, why not a new war on poverty? It will mostly do the same thing, since a specific race is disproportionately affected by poverty due to historical..."situations". There can't be a backlash if it isn't directed explicitly for one race, even though it would in actuality be mostly directed at one race due to a previously rigged game, so to speak. LBJ understood this back in the 60s, and while his foreign policy was a disaster, the gains the black community made in the 60s and 70s were exponential due to the war on poverty, and the game might not even be rigged much at all if Ronald Reagan and his whore wife hadn't came along and basically destroyed everything LBJ did, along with gutting the mental health system, and somehow an even more disasterous foregin policy than LBJ.
@SconnerStudios
@SconnerStudios Жыл бұрын
If you aren't familiar with the war on poverty, you should definitely read about it. Assuming you're in the same political mindset as me, you have to be crafty and witty with how you advocate policies. It's why Obama was elected twice and Hillary lost to a game show host with an ego the size of Kanye. If Obama came out in 2009 and said, "you see these tea partiers and their racist rhetoric" or "they hate me because of my skin" (even though we all know that played a part), he'd have lost to Mitt Romney badly in 2012. Playing the games the right wing has been playing since Ronald Reagan is the only way to succeed now. The American populous isn't inherently stupid, but they're easy to manipulate.

@@SconnerStudios keep in mind, reparations addresses some of the nefarious systemic acts that black defendants of slavery experienced. But to keep it simple… Although whites were paid reparations for each slave they released those slaves nor the descendants were never compensated… although they were promised the 40 acres and a mule. So you see…. this is a debt that was never paid to black folks for all the labor used to build the railroads, the White House house and so forth. Not to mention the mutilating of black women slaves in the name of science (OBGYN). We currently have a legal term for that called “emotional distress”, where the defendant is awarded damages so trying to rebrand reparations by another term would be futile.
