Consumer prices in Turkey have risen at their fastest pace in two decades. Inflation reached a record 48.7% in January.
Well as always with a new year it seems that hikeups are almost unavoidable. But no need for alarm because Turkey's exports hit an all-time high with a 17% annual jump to 17.6 billion dollars in January.
Rising energy prices, and harsh winter conditions pushed imports up to 28 billion dollars last month, with energy costing the country the most at 9 billion dollars.
But should be a hot summer for Turkey because the trade minister said today the country will exceed 250 billion dollar export target for this year.
If you have questions, please comment down below. I'd be happy to answer them all.

I work for a global conglomerate in financial planning & analysis in New York City; we have projected inflationary cost for the next 3 years in our pricing. As it currently stands in February 2022, we anticipate rising costs until end of 2025.

There are a number of problems that need to be addressed for this to work. 1. Turkey has too much commercial infrastructure to support. When China started, they were dirt poor. There was no real economy. Most people traded with each other for food etc. 2. Turkey has very few natural resources. Yes, the top line GDP and export numbers are increasing but the profit level is falling because Turkey has to buy raw materials on the international market to manufacture the things they export. The more they make, the more they lose. 3. Turkey needs to buy most of their fuel from foreign countries using a devalued currency. Just adds cost to everything. I believe this is not a good path for Turkey to take. The population is too young and accustomed to living in a modern economy. They will either revolt or leave.

yeah the guy is talking out of his arse, he could be an AK parties payroll. Most of Turkish exports require importing goods. Much of our debt is financed in dollars and euro's.

Thank you for explaining this in simple terms for foreigners. I did not really understand why the lira was devaluing at such a rapid rate. I truly hope that this model works out for the country and doesn't hurt it's lower income and rural citizens.

I do not think you have the slightest knowledge of basic economics or an awareness of what an average 50% inflation means to the average citizen. How will the young Turkish citizen be able to raise a family, educate his children, be housed, and feed himself when his currency, and therefore his purchasing power, is disappearing day by day, hour by hour? Do you honestly think that a people, no matter what people, will not react when misery reaches its peak? Please read the history of France, Russia etc etc.

Your point is one sided, you should also compare imports which are now at record highs, coupled with a devalued lira, the consumers are paying the price for economic fallacy. Items such as rice, flour, meat, and a whole host of other products that used to be produced locally, are now all imported as production capacity has been eliminated over the last 2 decades. You cannot copy the China Model if you sabotage your production abilities.

Excellent explanation of the high inflation in Turkey presently. The copied model ( A La China) may,in the long run,work for the country. However,I cannot see the average Turk tolerating increasing goods and services prices for years,their monthly salaries more or less frozen just for the sake of achieving a goal that will take years. Most people around the world live on a month to month basis,they want to be happy today,not in ten years time.

Well frankly adadin. Its no new economic model. We in Pakistan face similar situation but dealt with it much much better. We do not compare with middle income country, we are below turkey but challenges we face are similar from geography to neighbourhood etc. Anyways if erdogan increase the interest rate. It would hurt erdogans friends who have take lot of loans. But public would be not suffering. We have increase the interest rate in 2019 and now lowered to 8 percent. Government has increased to 8.25 percent and it has been going on for a long time and inflation stays at 10 percent. With huge subcidies on food, good crops atleast public is saved from brunt. Even salaries increased is helping people. In turkey lira has gone done. This is the reason your exports grow and become competitive. Few weeks ago erdogan says that weaking or lira is bad and tried to control it. Previous Pakistani government does that and in turn ruin Pakistan and this government has to suffer a lot. Besides now even he let it go and lira free fall and so does turkey exports grow. Now if he increases interest rate it would ease inflation too. And in few months time when petrol and diesel and gas prices fall everything would fall back in place. This would loose erdogan a lot of capital but save turkey. We see very few islamic countries actually developed because of hardwork and not oil... And all the hard work of turk brothers must not go to waste. Increasing interest rate would stop construction for a while but there are not many buyers for it. Only Pakistanis and indians are buying low end flats. Half of them hate the difficult migration process amd return. The Europeans would never like to migrate in turkey. Language is a big barrier. I hope turkey mainstains its tragectory. Even if it losses for an year or two but in the long run it must mainstain ita momentum

Great analysis of whats going on in Turkey. I understand better now what Turkey is trying to do and makes sense. There is a real problem with some of this though, people who hold their money in dollars and in Real Estate won't get hurt with this strategy, but people without the ability to protect their assets in dollars will really get crushed. In a sad way, they will become the engine of this new economic model by supplying cheap desperate labor to keep food on their tables but I sure would not want to be in the class.

Turquie has one of the best location on the world map to accomplish what China did. What China did within 50 years is remarkable. 90% of the population has moved from poverty to middle class. But China has been very cautious with improving education, anti corruption rules and social - political unity inside the country in order to obtain such a great result. Good luck Turkey 🤲

In my opinion, this project is not realistic because the government is making the poor, even poorer. Turkish people are really struggling to pay for basic living conditions like food and take on multiple or dangerous jobs to survive because of high inflation. I have been to Turkey and I loved the country and its people but I often wonder if human rights exist in Turkey. In addition, Turkey does not have time on its side. Right now, the country is already behind and smaller than China so can it keep up with the current developments? Personally, I believe that Turkey could invest more in the many intelligent people that the land owns and trigger them to boost the economy instead of making them suffer.

No doubt, exports will increase with the liras devaluation. Yet Turkey is a heavy net importer of energy which is paid for in dollar therefore with a weaker lira paying for such dollar dominated services such as energy will increase. Retuers have even reported despite exports increasing, the trade deficit for this month alone has actually INCREASED an record 240% to $6.79 billion, mainly stemming from an record import in energy. Therefore it's impossible an weaker lira, combined with exports would allow turkey to break free from a trade deficit. Instead the lira will continue its devaluation (further increasing the trade deficit) though erdogan has by burning the reserves and his fx scheme buyed the turkish lira a few months of stability
@pilotpetrov3855
@pilotpetrov3855 2 жыл бұрын
That's exactly it. For a nation that reliant on imports this is a terrible policy. And of course ultimately for the common citizen who barely can afford anything these days. This won't get better if Erdogan keeps going that route. It will get a lot worse.
@user-zv8lm8ex7g
@user-zv8lm8ex7g 2 жыл бұрын
@@pilotpetrov3855 I have noticed most people praising erdogan and his policies, are south asians etc who live OUTSIDE turkey and dont experience the effects. With the lira decline, it inevitably means the purchasing power/wealth of ordinary citizens will decrease. Last year alone the wealth of ordinary citizens holding lira would have declined 70%. I myself held approximately 10,000 USD worth of lira in a saving account, yet now that is the equivalent of 3k USD😂 I am a banker in turkey, the lira will continue to decline as the fundamental faults still remain, combined with stress from energy imports. Though erdogan has buyed a few months of stability by begging for money from arabs etc. However these measures wont last for long. The lira will trade between 12-13 til March, then start an slow descent towards 16 by July. Yet at such stage, owing to the fundamental reasons + going bankrupt trying to cover money under the government promise to protect fx deposits in lira. The lira will slide to 30 by the end of the year. Yet obviously erdogan and his propaganda that he is somehow the next islamic caliph has somehow worked on south asians and arabs who think we will become a superpower.

@@learnislamstepbystep2869 why? Are you trolling or are generally saying this😂😂will God spawn gas in central turkey in 2023? Though I presume ur referring to gas found in the Mediterranean, it's a minimal amount in actual turkish territory however in the "contested" zone with Greece, there is potential for gas. (Though not enough to satisfy turkeys energy demand) and as you know the Europeans, Nato, + usa would never let Turkey seek gas in such areas. Hence if u check statistics, turkey has actually INCREASED producing energy via coal this year.

@@user-zv8lm8ex7g yeah, I noticed that, too. Most people praising this are the ones who don't have to suffer the consequences right now. I think it's part of this idealization of Erdogan, just like you said. Since he is a "good Muslim" everything he does is the right thing to them. Even if he goes against virtually every experts opinion on this issue. And also (and correct me if I'm wrong) in Islam interest rates are seen as "the devils work" so that might play a role in perception and Erdogans motive as well. Wish you all the best, mate and I hope for better times for you and your country. Turkey brings everything to the table to be a wealthy, thriving nation. You just need better management than this.

Inflation is the result of interest bearing debts and nothing else. Allah didn't forbid it for nothing. Covid and logistic issues didn't cause inflation. Newly printed money is brought into the economy though borrowing. The rich have been borrowing against cheap interest rates which allowed them to gamble on the markets and huge leverage trading. This has been going on for ages and now it has reached a point of no return. The FED is merely streching time and you might even see strangely the dollar value go up, but we're seriously in big trouble because the world economy is build on the dollar and it's not a question if but when the dollar will collapse.
