You should really make a poll. Who would buy a record changer nowadays. I wonder how many would love a new fresh out of the box one.

I grew up with BSR changers and my Mom had a Zenith console with a changer. I always loved them. In 2009, out of nostalgia, I got the Crosley Stack o Matic which I still have. Other than it being belt driven, its changing mechanism is basically a carbon copy of the BSR.

The most sophisticated changer I've seen is the Thorens TD 224. There are a few clips on KZfaq of it in action. Wish I had one.

I love changers! Am not an audiophile though so maybe that's why. My grandpa had one and it mesmerized me as a little kid!😊

Earlier record changers had some features that were lost in later years. From the 20s to the 40s, companies were experimenting with different changer systems. Some worked really well, and some weren't to careful with the fragile 78s of the time. The 40s had a lot of changers that used one or two shelves that the records rested on and were dropped from. In the 50s, the industry mostly settled on using this system that stacks the records on the spindle and drops them one at a time using a finger that's inside the spindle. This was a peak for record changers in my opinion; Many models could stack 12-14 records as opposed to the 5-6 records later models offered. Most changers also had automatic indexing(size detection). Then, there were models that had special features: Glaser-Steers had a changer in the late 50s that brought the platter to a complete stop while changing the record, Webcor had a model that automatically changed the speed depending on the size of the record, and the Markel company made a changer that could play both sides of each record stacked on it using 3 wheels that the record sat on(I'd look the Markel changer up, it's mesmerizing to watch).

What I really do miss about the old record changers is the auto turnoff. I sometimes forget my new turntable doesn’t shut off and damn near break a leg getting to my album before it hits the run off and just spin endlessly. Those old record changers were pretty amazing for the times. My old stereo had a large round adapter (instead of the flat rectangle piece) that fit over the the spindle to accommodate 45’s. Those old stereos were pretty tough. The tonearm (and needles aka stylus) were also not as delicate as the tone arms today. GREAT VIDEO. Thank you for reminding me we had really cool “stereos” growing up in the 60’s.

It is such a funny coincidence that you should release this video today; for the past couple days I have been more interested in changers and hope to find one for a good price. My grandmother has a BSR changer in a console, and that has taught me how to operate them, although your video still enlightened me to some details. I don't have room for a console but I hope to find a standalone changer like your Glenburn or even the Technics. They are so much fun, and I would also love to learn to work on them. Do you have any suggestions for learning how to repair these things?

I love that you have a B5 stacker! Alot of people dont know that technics made those in the 70s. BTW the Technics plastic changers did not have a mute cycle circuit.

I grew up with BSR record changers. First was a four speed in a Dansette Major, and then a 3 speed in a Ferguson music centre. That was until 1983, when I was given a second-hand Goldring Lenco, together with a Amstrad 5000 tuner/amplifier and Wharfdale speakers.

The over arm did not sense how many records were about to be played. It would just repeat until the last record, when it would fall down, and would know not to repeat after that

I'm a fan of early Collaro (Magnavox) MicroMatic units. They have that wonderful 'automatic size detection' feature that is a treat to watch. The changer taps the edge of the record on the upper spindle with the tone arm during the change cycle to determine the size, and configures the 'set down' point automatically. Early MicroMatics could automatically play any size record (between 6 and 12 inches), even oddball sizes. Later models (after '67, I believe) dumbed this down to just the 'standard three sizes'. Those old Micromatics also drove the change mechanism directly from the motor, so no matter if the record was 16 or 78 rpm, the cycle happened at the same leisurely pace every time. Most others (including BSRs) are kind of scary to watch when playing 78s, because the mechanism is driven by the platter, and thus proportional to the platter speed. My BSR's change cycle is very slllllooooooowwwww at 16 rpm, but at 78, it's almost comical. There was a Zenith Cobra-Matic unit that, despite having an AC drive motor, could be adjusted to function at any speed between 10 and 85 rpm. Early 1950s, it did this with a mechanism very similar to what they call a 'constantly variable transmission' in some modern automobiles. Finding one today would probably be a little to expensive for my budget, but they are neat to see. There were changers (Perpetuum-Ebner, I think?) that actually stopped the platter and gently lowered the records before resuming. Saw a video of one once, WAY cool.

The changer you're thinking of was made by Glaser-Steers, although I believe it was used by Perpetuum-Ebner a few times. They licensed the changer to other companies more than selling it under their own name

@Record-ology. You may already be aware of this. I have the double album "Live Bullet" by Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band on vinyl from 1975 (?). The two discs have been pressed with "side1" backed with "side 4" and "side 2" backed with "side3". I think the idea was to load your "autochanger" record player - with the tall centre spindle fitted, with side 1/disc 1 first , and then side 2/disc 2 second. After playing sides 1 and 2, flip the stack over to play side 3 (the back of disc 2) and then side 4 (the back of disc 1) playing out to the end. Maybe this was done to give the effect of a continuous "live concert" performance. I have quite a few double LP's on vinyl and they are all pressed in the right order - side 1/side 2 , and side 3/side 4. Thanks for all of your very interesting and informative videos on YT. Stay safe and well.

Very good video young grandpa! Record players were nothing but record changers when I was growing up. I wish I kept at least one. When records would plop on the platter, it would sound awful, thinking it would ruin your records, especially the big 12 inch records. But all was well. I still play those same records, manually, one at a time.

I remember my parents had an enormous mahogany console stereo in the early 1960's. The 45 adapter must have weighed half a pound and it was mostly metal. As far as the RCA models, my Mom had one (she was born in 1933). My Uncle threw it away (grrr!)

this is a great video i love how well you explained everything about the changers and you explain everything in a simple but informative manner al you got to do is watch this vid and you have all info about automatic changers,i always loved changers but many years ago i was brainwahed into thinking how bad changers were bad for records how they would scratch records .well after I got my audiotechnica atlp-120 turntable cause my old TT onkyo automatic died on me ,i was not happy with it deep down ,I work for a living my job stressfull and very mentally chalenging after i would come home from work i would play records once they play i will relax and just when i am relaxed the record ends ,got to get up and you know well i got tired of this that is when I started to watch your show you showed all in one record players and how they were coming back ,you got me thinking about the bsr's my father had so I started getting them first was a BSR c -20 by fischer it had a ceramic cart in it bought back a lot of memories I also started looking at my records I have had since i was in high school they have no scratches or scuffs on them cause being an audiofool myself i was very mental about where my records were played,iu noticed the raised edges on record and how the label area was thicker in middle of record and realized how could records get scratched ,l remember as my father would play second side of a record how he woiuld slide them manhandled them sometimes drop tone arm by accident onto record thats where all the scratches came from ,as I write this i an listening to some records STACKED on a BSR -610 with a mag cart 1.80 grams tracking force anti skare set to 1.75 about and when I test the anti skate it does not move at all ,the tone looks exactly like a tone arm I have seen the other higher end record players like the Elac benjamin miracord these TT's are well built platter on them is heavy aluminum and thicker I bought two of them but in shipping since the seller did not pack them right they are now useless ,but I like to know how the audiofool can say that the stackers are low class the 610 is very quiet I do not hear any rumble they can use a light weight cart ,my garrard AT-60 another stacker the tome arm is a little beefier but very adjustable the antiskating set up on this TT is a little different but when I place this on my hudson hi fi strobe disc on blank side you should see how it will not move anywhere you p,lace it it stays ,even on record with a blank side ,then there is my dual 1009 sk this when it starts to play a record it is soooo quiet it actually sounds like a mechanical clock I love watching this thing work ,the other garrard I have is aliile clunkier it is a auto slim pmk-2 the platter on this one is way smaller like what you would see in suit case players the platter is heavy metal it has a spring for adjusting the tracking force and I could not believe the antiskating on this one i see no adjustment on it but i tested it out on two different carts one a ceramic and one on a pickering they are different tracking force but it does not move on a blank record or on blank side of my hudson hi-fi strobe disc it stays where you put it ,also very quiet it looks more like the type of player you would see in a portable record player this one i just got it was dirty ,frozen but it cleaned up well ,why are these called low end ,i have the crosley c-10 which is a pro-ject close to being a debut 3 cost more ,it is good but my anti skating which uses a wieght on a fishing line is not that good it will move slowly ,and is the only manual tt i will ever get ever ,i say records get scratched cause nobody told my father how to take care of them ,i have been using a stacker for more than two years the records i have played and more than several times are not SCRATCHED !!!!!! even when they fall on top of each other and you can hear it sliding onthe other record so far nothing at all ,i know this is a long comment ,but even the automatic TT's that only played one record are allso frowned upon ,I just want people to know you can't be sheep just cause somebody says this is junk low class it may not be a lot of these record players were made if they were bad they would have stop making them way before then ,and compared how the new TT's of today are made that cost more than an arm and two legs and with there high precision bearings they say they use thay are rather cheaply made with the light weight wood base or plastic parts for tonearm and platter ,JRo live long and prosper RECORD-OLOGY !!!!! keep it up

Yeah I had a Glenburn rebranded as a Fisher from about 1977. It had a magnetic cartridge and sounded great mostly due to the ADC made cartridge, however it was temperamental and unreliable. Mine was pretty accurate speed wise initially but did get faster as it got older as the idler came out of adjustment due to stretched springs in the mechanism. I think I got rid of it when it developed a hum from motor vibration. Garrards, BSRs and Glenburns were "agricultural" in operation. In Germany Dual and Elac were far more sophisticated. I also have a Technics SL-B5 and was about as sophisticated a changer got.
