How does this setup with the DMP differ from plugging straight into a 2i2 (bass-2i2-macbook)? Genuinely interested as the latter is how i always record. Am i loosing quality by not using a preamp before my 2i2?

Digital preamps like the ones in a lot of audio interfaces tend to be very clean-sounding. They don’t impart very much character to a sound, if any at all. An external preamp that uses tubes or transformers will color and thicken the sound, adding harmonics and character. Either one will work fine, but a nice preamp can add that extra sweetness.

I have a question: let's say you're recording through a mic'ed cab and you want to also record the plain di signal of the same take. At what point in the chain would you split the signal? Do you compress the di before it hits the daw? What in your experience would be the easiest way to record to leave it for later? P.s. Thanks for making these videos they're great

HI noreaction thanks for the comment! Great question as well! I like to lightly compress the DI and the Amp, I split before the amp. The Bass goes to the DI box and then a parallel output goes to the Amp. Thanks for the great question! Have a marvelous time recording! Many thanks

Thanks a lot for the video! Right now I am trying to record a bass DI, but my E-string sounds far louder than the others. This is a problem of my bass guitar or should I solve this with a compressor in my DAW?
@Producelikeapro

Hi +Francisco Estrada It might be your Bass, firstly check the string isn;t too close to the pickup. You might have to adjust the pickup so it's even across the strings. Next you can try compressing the bass a little more so the louder strings are dealt with, but first I would check the pickup placement. Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

All of my instruments plug into a mixer (Cerwin-Vega CVM 1224FX USB, that's a mouthful). The main outs from the mixer go to a Tascam US 2x2 interface and on to the computer and DAW. Would there be any advantage to running a DI box on my bass and guitars as opposed to just plugging straight into the mixer as it had 6 channels with pre's? My bass is a Rick 4001 and my main guitar is a Gibson Flying V and I use Mercuriall Spark as an amp sim on the guitar. Thanks for all of the vids!!!

Hey I have a question about the differences between a DI and an audio interface. I have a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and am looking to record bass. However, I've been seeing a lot of recommendations on getting a DI to record bass. Is it really necessary? Thanks Warren!
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 9 жыл бұрын
Hi +aslefhin Great question! Many interfaces have a proper instrument level in as well as a mic and line level input, if they do then you should be ok and not have to use a di. However at some stage you might want to invest in a high quality Di would could actually help the sound quality, but just buying a cheap passive Di when your interface may already have an instrument input won;t be a great improvement. I hope that helps? Let me know if that all makes sense! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

Hey Warren - Thanks for the answer, I had the same question and have the same audio interface. Other than a high quality DI, would you recommend getting an amp model package? I assumed that it was necessary but from your video it seems that with a DI box, an audio interface and a DAW, one should be set especially with plugins from the DAW to enhance the sound. Sorry I play bass much more than I record and am trying to figure things out.

Yeah I've got a question! I was going to buy a passive DI for my bass but I was overwhelmed by the price differential low to high. I mean I could understand that with active DIs because there could be all manner of esoteric valve circuitry going on, but passive? Surely it's just a transformer (robots in disguise - sorry , couldn't resist) and a few caps and resistors - nothing that could command a high price, yet I've seen them range from twenty bucks to several hundred. What's the deal????

Hi Warren. First, thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. You might already answered this question many times, but since i can't find a perfect answer, i'll shoot it anyway. My signal chain is this: FMR Audio RNP 8380 -> tl audio fat man 1 (Compressor - sometimes i use it...) -> Emu 1616m -> DAW Since my interface (EMU 1616m - xlr, trs and ts inputs) and the FMR Preamp got 2 Hi-z inputs (Trs and ts), at the front, the same as the Mic inputs, do i really need a DI box? I was thinking using the Ampeg Svx amp simulation and or the Cubase pro 8 Vst amp simulation, and connect the bass to the Emu or the preamp. In your opinion, would this work? Thank you very much. Best regards from Portugal!!!

Hi obecas thanks for your question. If you can get enough gain from your Hi Impedance input on the front of the FMR Preamp then you should be fine, I just looked up the EMU 1616 and I see the Hi Impedance inputs so imagine there should be no issues! Hi Warren! Great stuff as always! I have a question... If I use DI box as a splitter (behringer D120) ,and plug my bass guitar in input 1, that splites signal to two outs. So i wanna take out 1 to the bass amp and out 2 to my audio interface as DI... I use Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56 which also has DI (labeled as "instrument input") inputs,my question is do I have to plug it into "instrument" inputs on saffire or do I plug it in regular xlr inputs since there is behringer DI box earlier in the chain...Does it matter?Is there a difference in signal quality etc.? Also,for those "instrument" inputs on saffire i can choose 3 modes : Microphone,instrument,line. In this case which one do you think I should choose? Sorry if this is a stupid question but in this case instrument vs line mode kinda confuses me... Thanks!

Hi kuziononekajjesadto I would try going into the line/instrument input on the Saffire first. What are the differences between recording bass > interface > computer OR bass > DI > interface > computer?
@portwill
@portwill 7 жыл бұрын
If and only if your interface has lower quality direct input (preamp) than you might want to spare some money for a better pre or DI to overcome that problem. Also, if you run long (above 15ft) cables from the guitar to your pre (interface), you may need to convert it to XLR mic level and run it with XLR cable to lessen the degradation of the signal even more. Otherwise for most music-loving human beings it's a waste of money as you most likely won't even hear the 1000USD difference and you will be good with your interface preamp, especially nowdays. Let's say you buy a focusrite clarett, you then probably won't ever need a better pre. If you are a professional and you do this for a living then you need to have the best of the best so then you will need to show the customers you have good equipment and pristine hifi signal chain but then you would not ask this question anyways. Hope this helped.

Hello, I'm trying to record bass i just plugged it into my interface. would it be smart to get a di box. I know in live settings di boxes are good. so my problem is.. I recorded my bass thru logic and just my interface and the bass doesn't sound bad but it sound hollow and doesn't have much of a presence. If it turn the bass up it's too much just low ends but not clear. I was wondering if there's good method to recording the bass even before messing with it in the DAW? for example like with vocals and guitar mic placement is crucial. something simple like that makes a big difference. so i was curious if there are things necessary to recording bass as you're recording it?

Awesome! Quick question. I have been struggling in studios to get a good sound out of an american musicman sterling. Engineers insists only getting me straight to a radial DI box and into the board. The tone is super mid rangy and weak. I tried to get them to run a DI from an amp, be it an in house svt or my little markbass, and a mic on a 15 cab to no avail. How do you go about recording active basses? and there has to be an abvious difference between the tipical green or blue radial DI box and the BAE, do you think this might be a reason for a weak tone? SHould i just give up on trying to record active bass? Get a preamp DI pedal like an aguilar? thanks

Hi Zinzo1 thanks for the great question! I use two mono inputs, one for the mic and one for the Di. I always keep the Bass panned in the center unless I'm doing something quite twisted and maybe heavily effecting the bass. Have a marvelous time recording! Many thanks Warren

thanks, I will try this with my gear. I will run mono cable from bass, split into pc interface and presonus preamp, and experiment recording stereo, mono two channels ,etc... on pc, i will experiment compressor with ssl, glue, nls, and other I never bothered, to purchase DI, as I play guitar, but I guess is worthy of a an effort! I guess the reasoning for this is to have options of merging, or using one or another... regards, Peter

Hi warren.Thanks for the video.Can you tell me about "Tech 21 BSDR SansAmp Bass Driver DI"? Is that a better choice combined with a mic preamp and compressor? (I'm gonna use my future fender p-bass with it.my interface is M-Track plus)

Thanks for the great question! amir behzad ebrahimi I have a Tech 21, it's great! These days I just duplicate the di and put a sans amp on it, but for a great amp simulation and just general ballsy tone it sounds amazing! personally I would split the signal and print a clean Di as well for more control. Have a marvelous time recording! Many thanks Warren

Hi Warren, great video. What are you thoughts with recording bass through the di but running the bass through your pedals for a sound that you like. Eg I use a Fuzz pedal and a Wah and di record my bass through theses pedals. Is that ok to do?

Hi I use a BSS D.I. to record electric guitar and bass. for the moment i don't have amps, so i'm using software like Amplitube 4 and Mark studio 2. but i am not satisfied with the tone i get.overall because it's hard to get a good definition and a clear sound , and mainly the bass, in the mix sound very "confusing". (my bass is a LTD by ESP "B4-E") i've tried cutting low frequencies a bit more, and playing in different ways. without getting a good result. any experience or recommendation about this kind of plug-ins? thanks for sharing your videos ;)

Hi Warren, So I am thinking of picking up a di for mostly bass but maybe some alt uses as well. I have a mix of active and passive basses. mostly record with the active basses. Have been considering the Radial JDI or the Neve RNDI. Have you used these, and if so do you favor either? Or are there other boxes under $300ish I should check out? This would be used as part of my pedalboard for both recording and live... (Or maybe I would be better off budgeting in enough for a BAE 1073 DMP or something???) Thanks so much!

Recording bass via DI is a fool's game. Would you do that with guitar? Probably not. Then why bass? Only exception if if you're running through an ITB amp sim.

Thanks for the great video Warren! In case of using external effects, eg. from pedalboard. What do you suggest to do in terms of signal routing when planning to have a DI + amp with mic channels into the DAW? Is re-amping the only feasible choice?
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 8 жыл бұрын
Hi +mkavanne Can you clarify? I will say if you can print the effects separately at the same time as a clean amp and di then great! If not and the effects are going through the amp as part of the sound that's completely ok and you can double the di when you mix and apply a virtual sound to that if necessary! But try and commit to a bass sound with the amp, effects and di blended the way you really want to hear them! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

+Produce Like A Pro Hi Warren! Thanks for your quick reply! Basically trying to avoid recording external effect direct via DI into DAW in order to have as rich sound as possible. I was watching some tutorials for the concept of reamping. I'm totally newbie into advanced recording. I have an amp, speaker, DI, mic and the effects and learning to use Logic Pro x. I would like to build the best possible dry and wet signal. Hence, I would appreciate your suggestions on these two different signal routings. Thanks in advance!
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 8 жыл бұрын
Hi +mkavanne thanks for the comment, yes I would split it and have as many options as you can get until you are comfortable. You might find that when you come to mix you favour one sound on=ver the other and that might effect the way you record next time! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
