Do you struggle getting your guitar, bass and vocal tracks sounding the way they sound in your head?
Do you spend countless hours trying to shape your tracks with EQ, but are rarely happy with the results?
This was the story of my life!
I’m sure you’ve heard (from guys like me) that you should “get it right at the source”.
It’s true. If you want a pro-sounding recording, you really do need to capture your tracks properly in the first place.
But what the hell does that actually mean?
How exactly do you go about capturing guitars, bass and vocals right “at the source”?
What should you be paying attention to?
What’s important?
What’s not important?
In this video, I show you how I go about tracking my guitars, acoustic guitars, bass and vocals all while using that same 8-channel interface and a single SM57...nothing more.
All while working in less-than-ideal conditions.

you just earned a subscriber.. simply because you cut away the bs that is SOOO widespread on YT. expensive plugins, DAWs and microphones are NOT needed to create great sounds these days. I am primarily a drummer, and secondary a mixer/producer. I record 95% of my drum parts in my home studio and I use pretty inexpensive gear. I ve use d a LOT of time (years!) testing cheap and cheapish microphones and interfaces to keep the cost down. I am proud to say then 9 out of 10 times my tracks hit the top mastering engineers in my country they praise the drum sound. So: keep it up.. no BS and just good content!

😂I was so happy to see you using an sm57 as a vocal mic. I'm a bedroom guitarist making music with my buddy who's a drummer. So I tend to do vocals myself (harsh death and black metal vocals) and I throw a sock over my mic to use a pop filter and it works great. What a versatile mic!

I certainly learned a thing or two about bass recording. My last demo used a similar bass (4-string Soundgear with dual active humbuckers). My problem was that I went D.I. with the mids boosted and wasted quite a bit of time trying to "un-muddy" the resulting sound when it went through my bass sim. Thanks for the tip.

Another great, helpful video.. As Usual, Bobby! I have a question, for recording DIs (Guitars, Bass), what is the ideal DBs you recommend, Bobby? I mainly use Amp sims like Tonehub and Neural stuff, So having a great DI and “Reamping” with those is my goal, thats why I wanna have a good DI with proper levels.. So whats the average sound while playing and the peaks? Thanks again Bobby! Cheers my friend!

@@jeremino263 thanks for helping on this topic.. Im really noob at this production/mixing thing, but digging it a lot, studying a lot, even with Bobbie’s course.. I have red and watched a couple videos about it, some say that if you record to low, you lose quality, some say that the only thing to be concearned is to avoid clipping (0db).. Others say, just make the peak at -6db..You are at the sweet spot there, so you get headroom.. Its gets confused, specially for someone who are getting into these concepts.. You probably know what I’m saying.. Anyway, thanks again for taking your time and replying me about it! Cheers my friend!

@@guinganfg i'm only an amateur as well but since everything now is done in a digital audio workstation i'm pretty sure it doesn't matter; you can always make things louder or quieter without adding noise. (wich couldn't be done in the early days when recording with real tape machines) just avoid clipping, that can't be undone. you're welcome

@@FrightboxRecording Thanks! My DI signal always looks really quite. I'm going to begin tracking guitars soon on some songs and plan on re-amping. I've got some Radial re-amp boxes, but have noticed, in just practicing the re-amp process, I have to crank the volume on the re-amp box to get it back to instrument level, so I figured my source signal had to be too quiet. Thanks again for the advice and the great videos!

On the guitar why do you have reduced by 9.3 Db. Is it so you can record hotter going in for nicer wave forms or does it allow you to get more aggressive with plug-ins without clipping. I'm not too experienced with recording.

A problem I run into when EQing my guitar tracks is when I hear crazy amounts of whistling and “ssssss” sounds, (usually between 2k and 5k) I get tempted to completely notch them out. but I always hear people say not to over do eqing. That Jordan guy from hardcore studio channel says he only takes about 2 dB away. But when I do that I still hear an obnoxious amount of whistling. What am I doing wrong? Is it okay to take like 6-8 db away or complete notch out a certain frequency?
@FrightboxRecording
@FrightboxRecording 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with Jordan on this one. If you have to do a ton of notching, something must be wrong at the source. I've found the issue is usually the cab, mic placement or IR.
