Great live mix on the kit man! Love the D6 on everything. Totally true with the cymbals needing to be controlled in this heavier music. I usually turn my overheads down and gate the shit out of the kick and snare to get that super punchy sound!

Thanks! I actually don’t have the space in my new studio so I’ve been using DIs and load boxes on amps to achieve the same effect.

I love more "real" or "raw" recordings. This sounds greats. another question: Bass DI/Amp phase. I've heard of people using the delay to line them up. Couldn't you just nudge or shift the tracks to line up in phase?
@RobotDogStudio
@RobotDogStudio 4 жыл бұрын
Brantley Allen pasting for KZfaq: absolutely either way is cool in mixing. I think the reason I do it like that is actually cause I set it right after sound check so they’re phase aligned through tracking and then I don’t have to mess with it again 👍

I just discovered your channel and im stunned! You're doing an amazing job and your work sounds so great! I can't believe your videos have so little views. But you've just got yourself a new follower :) Your videos are a huge knowledge base. Just curious: At ~21:12, you show the time difference between bass DI and mic. In the project audio window, it displays region length of 141 samples. But when you open up the Sample Delay, it shows you've only delayed it by 30 samples. Why is that?

Thanks so much for that feedback! I was just hitting my stride with videos when COVID hit and I never really got my momentum back... but I'm shooting a new video this weekend and working on a new studio build series so hopefully I will have more content on the way! As for your question - super good catch there! I think it totally should be like 140 samples! I can't emphasize enough how quickly I used to do these projects... so I may have measured it at another point in the session and it was 30 there... and then for whatever reason it was 140 where I randomly picked to measure for the walkthrough.... so the bass may in fact be a little out of phase! Just goes to show that it didn't totally wreck the mix 😅

Awesome video. For a raw metal recording do you recommend isolated bass tracks mic’d up or through a board.

Thanks! Honestly if your bass amp has a good DI out that’s usually perfect.

What mic did you use for the bass? 15" or 10" speakers? Cone? Edge?

Brantley Allen shure beta 52 on the cone, 4x10 cab... but I’m not a stickler for this setup, just what I had available

Now I have more questions: I’ve only ever done mixing and production one track at a time in Logic Pro so this question may seem elementary. Concerning your workflow, it appears that you are using Logic as a virtual multitrack tape machine and recording a take of the full band, then each successive take right after each take along the timeline. Is this the accepted way to record a band live? Or is there a another way to organize several multitracked live takes in Logic? Like some kind of built in playlist system? I might be recording a live band in the future and I’m trying to get ahead of the production curve. Thank you for your help.
@RobotDogStudio
@RobotDogStudio 2 жыл бұрын
This is definitely how I would do it if the band is not using a click track-successive takes after one another in the timeline. However, when you group tracks together you can create multitrack "take folders" which is Logic's excellent version of a "playlist" system. I would only pack successive takes into folders like that if they were locked to the exact same rhythm/timing with a click track / metronome. Meaning I could take a verse from one take, chorus from another and they would be perfectly lined up with each other. Without a click, they would be drifting too much and it's best just to see them one after another in the timeline for editing purposes, rather than layered in a take folder. Hope all that makes sense!
@good4sound
@good4sound 2 жыл бұрын
@@RobotDogStudio thank you. That makes complete sense, especially in light of the click track. I think “take folders” is exactly what I was thinking about. I wasn’t sure what it was called. I go a little further down the KZfaq rabbit hole to see if that would be a fit for my project. Thank you for your insights.
