If you come across a Diamond Disc with a catalog number of 52089 and up, it's electrically recorded. Edison didn't start recording electrically until late 1927.

Well I mean to play them on a hybrid phonograph (non Edison) such as my Vita-Nola. You have to use sapphire as the steel chews them up.

Pathe' records were also unique in that they're run in groves were in the center of the disc where a normal record's outro grooves are. I have a 1917 Brunswick floor model player with a unique reproducer in that it can turn two ways and has 3 mounts for various needles so that it can play standard phonographs, diamond discs and pathe' records. It also has a sort of manually set automatic brake on the platter so when a normal record gets to its end it will stop the platter so you don't forget and let the spring unwind all the way down.

Edison Diamond Discs play with a diamond stylus, not a sapphire ball. There were styluses sold with diamonds mounted on them instead of a sapphire, which was meant to be used with machines like your Vitanola. The sapphire works but it isn't meant for Diamond Discs.

My late aunt was given an Edison diamond disk phonograph and those thick records and also ones that have the molded labels and you have to read them by a lamp. She worked at a music store that went bankrupt in the depression and since they owed her wages, they paid her with the phonograph and records. When I was 4 or 5 my grandma would play those records for me. My first exposure to records were the Edison ones. There were also the wax cylinder records too, but they didn't have a player for them. That Diamond disk phonograph is still in our family. And the records.

I've seen these in antique or record stores in the past at least once or twice but had no idea they were so different from 78s. The fact the grooves use vertical instead of horizontal motion is also fascinating as I don't know I've heard of another format like that. Very cool!

Vertical disc recordings have been around since the 1900s. The most common are from Pathé; but other companies used the technology until about 1920, when the Victor/Columbia patents expired.

Agree that these inexpensive players are well-suited to playing 78s. It's how I repurposed a Crosley Cruiser DeLuxe that was given to me for Christmas 2015 by a well-meaning (but slightly clueless) mother-in-law (remember, folks, it's the thought that counts!) The DeLuxe features Bluetooth and a pitch control, so it hooks nicely to the stereo receiver in my 'component' system. For LPs and 45s, I have my Heyday. For 78s and Bluetooth, I have my Cruiser DeLuxe. And it works marvelously.

out of phase is swapping one of the negative terminals with either left or right. swapping channels doesn't improve it as much. but that cartridge is more vertical compliant than some cartridges so that's why it was a decent volume.

Various companies came out with machines that played Edisons' records. Because Edison made his records to be played on his machines only, so other companies started to make machines to show his records could be played on other machines. Edison put a warning or message stating that playing his records on other machine may damage said records.

I use a 1964 Garrard Model 50 for old shellac discs. Cheaper to buy and much more precise than the plastic players. Plays 16, 33, 45, 78 rpms. I use a 1964 Shure M44C MM with a 3 mil conical for 78s. I use a bonded 0.7 mil conical for Edison Diamonds. A stereo MM cartridge handles horizontal AND vertical modulations just fine. No need to use sapphire tips. I track the Diamond discs at 2.5 grams, and it performs flawlessly.

One of the big issues that led to the demise of Edison records is that Edison personally kept a tight rein on what was recorded and he was fond of sentimental Victorian era music and sopranos like the one on the first record you played. The public had moved on to the jazz age and the old music just did not sell anymore. There was some movement toward what the public wanted late in Diamond Disc production, e.g, good jazz recordings by The Golden Gate Orchestra, but it was too late.

I remember seeing a box full of Edison diamond discs at an antique barn about 20 or more years ago and they even had engraved images (holograms) of Thomas Edison, not just a paper label. The vendor wanted $10 for each disc which wasn't a bad price considering I had seen them sell on eBay for between $80 to $100 each, but I had assumed at the time that a special Edison diamond disc player and stylus were needed, so I left them in the barn. Oh, well... :)

The problem with Edison's hill and dale type of recordings is that sometimes the needle jumps over spots instead of playing them while staying in the groove. It had been a problem for a long time which was one of the reasons that cylinder players fell out of favor in place of flat discs once they arrived on the scene. That being said, a diamond disc ordinarily sounds fantastic when played on an Edison diamond disc player. The phonograph player I own will play Edison, Pathe' and normal records as it has three different mounting positions for the styli needed on the reproducer. Unfortunately I don't have any Pathe' or Edison styli, though I do have about 10 diamond discs. I bought them in my late teens and have actually listened to them as at that time I had a vintage 1960's record player with a sapphire stylus and ceramic cartridge called "Longines Symphonette". Wish I still had the player, but in my early 20's I gave it to a friend of mine who disassembled it and using its motor and other parts along with some other things built a homemade tattoo gun with it, lol.
@RobertWrightOneManCovers
@RobertWrightOneManCovers 3 ай бұрын
The "problem" you assert here is completely wrong and doesn't exist. Only a damaged stylus had any problems -- undamaged stylii have played flawlessly for well over a century now. Cylinders fell out of fashion because discs were easier to store; no other reason. Cylinders were vastly superior to disc records in terms of sound, right up until they were discontinued.

I have a hologram label one that my great grandmother had. Think I constructed a cone with a sewing needle taped to its narrow end to hear it when I was very young. Played it at 78rpm but didn't use the tonearm needle because you couldn't hear it. Sounded like a waltz through the paper cone. Edison was too old fashioned to put out contemporary music of the day and the Edison Co. discs went out of favor.

Though Edison said 80 rpm, in reality, many play at 78 and other speeds. (I have Victor envelopes that also say "play at 80," but your ears will tell you that is too fast as well.) On an DD player, the sound is WONDERFUL! However, Edison had insisted on having input as to artists and repertoire, and maybe his taste was a little stodgy. Also, if you had a DD player, your restricted to diamond discs.
@RobertWrightOneManCovers
@RobertWrightOneManCovers 3 ай бұрын
You don't have any Victor sleeves that say 80rpm. The only companies that listed speeds on sleeves were Edison (80rpm), Columbia (80rpm), and Pathé ("90-100rpm"). NO Edison records pitch correctly except at exactly 80rpm. 78.26rpm as a speed standard didn't even EXIST for the first 40 years of the record industry.

I wonder if the Ortofon 78 cart/stylus would play these discs? The Edison Diamond Discs are a largely forgotten format, since the standard 78s won the format war. Isn’t it interesting that even back then, there were format wars. When I think of format wars, I think of VHS vs Beta, VHS vs DVD, and now, DVD or DVR vs streaming. In each of these cases, the winner was obvious. I sometimes wonder how much longer we’ll have the Redbox!!!

@Lucius1958
@Lucius1958 3 жыл бұрын
@@7JANEWAY The regular Diamond Discs were recorded at 150 grooves per inch; rather more than standard 78s of the time. However, in 1926, Edison introduced a series of "Long Playing" discs, recorded at about 450 grooves per inch - even finer than a vinyl LP. At 80 rpm, a 10 inch disc would play about 12 minutes per side; a 12 inch disc played about 20 minutes per side. These records, however, were a commercial failure: most of them were dubbed from standard discs, as recording a long piece in one take proved too difficult for the technology of the time. Also, since Edison was hostile to electric recording at the time, they were recorded acoustically: that required a very heavy reproducer, with a very tiny stylus, to play them back. This was too much for the record surface: most surviving Edison LPs are damaged, and prone to repeating and skipping; plus, the sound is rather thin and feeble, compared to other records. Edison did not adopt electric recording until 1927, but the damage was already done. Even the last-minute issue of the electric "Needle-Cut" 78s in 1929 could not forestall the company's fate.

@@7JANEWAYThey're aren't microgroove, which is a specific spec invented by Columbia in 1948, but they are much closer to a microgroove shape and size than they are to a standard 78 lateral groove. The Ortofon wouldn't work because I believe it's mono, which means no sounds would come from playing a vertical format record, and the 3mil stylus wouldn't navigate the Edison groove all that well.

They actually used to make such things - one make was called 'Recordio'. I had one for a few years but some evil man thwarted my plans to restore it and keep it forever by offering me an obscene amount of money for it, lol. The records didn't need to 'harden', though. They were usually acetate discs and could be played immediately after they were cut. The problem for a lot of them was they would only survive a handful of plays. Those old styluses were brutal and the material fairly soft. The idea of a home recording shifted pretty much to magnetic wire and tape after the war, so the notion of a phonograph recorder became outmoded. I like your idea, though, of a material that would 'harden' after it was cut. Perhaps if it were brushed with some chemical solution?

@RecordCollector96 3 жыл бұрын
Incorrect. Thickness of the record has nothing to do with surface noise. It has to do with the materials that the record was made with. Edison Diamond Discs made during World War 1 were noisier than the records that were produced during pre-WW1 and post-WW1, and that is because the material that went into them to quiet the surface noise had to be substituted for material of lesser quality.

I heard the reason for the surface noise was the same as others have mentioned on here: materials used when making these diamond discs, especially during the first world war. I also read that China clay and wood flour core was used in the production of these diamond discs, which is why moisture is the enemy to a lot of these Edison records and causes the cracks. However, rim chips and flea bites are common to see. It won't necessarily affect the playability of these Edison records as long as they don't go into the grooves of the record. I usually just play these with care.
