Congratulations on being the hero of your own story Travis! You are breaking the cycle and showing your daughter and your niece what’s possible. The way you kept reminding yourself out loud that you COULD use A, B, or C as an excuse but it “all comes back to me” - I think this is SO KEY to a successful long-term recovery, and I thought it was really impressive. To stay rooted in gratitude for what you have rather than lamenting over what you didn’t have as a child/don’t have now, etc. is critical. Thanks for sharing your story, and most importantly, thank you for being a present and loving father for your daughter. Knowing she is your “why” is a priceless gift, one that will instill in her a sense of self-esteem & self-worth that will serve her well on her own life journey. Wishing you the best for continued health, happiness and sobriety. ❤️

Hey mate, im really sorry for your loss. I personally understand how tough it is to lose someone to addiction. Remember though, it isn't true or helpful to blame the Drs. If I had cancer, I would want Drs that are understanding and willing to provide comfort from the physical and mental agony that can come with terrible pain, or illnesses including cancer. There is a time and a place for them and in fact the very vast majority of people who are prescribed opioid painkillers don't become addicted. However, some people are susceptible to addiction due to a variety of reasons including trauma and mental health.

I was a heroin addict for five years. Almost six. I too had a loving childhood all around. My story is a long one, marked by mental health issues and heartache. I lost my best friend and my only kindred spirit last July and I fell hard. I drank almost a fifth per day and my heroin use was escalating after attempting to get off of it - that only lasted a month. I OD’d and woke up in an ambulance. I was found in a bar restroom with a needle in my arm. Even that wasn’t enough to make me quit. I OD’d again. This time I woke up in the hospital to see my dad and my little sister looking at me with such pain in their eyes. I decided that I would get help then and there. I can’t hurt my family like this. I need to look up and be strong so that I can live truly and independently. I’m now two months clean. I know it isn’t much, but this is the longest I’ve been clean since before I started using. This man is an inspiration to me and many others in the same boat. Of all the interviews on this channel, I relate to this guy the most. Our stories are similar in some ways.

I would be careful not to call any addict "recovered". He is recovering - he will always be recovering.

Just curious?? Why is this the case?? Is it due to the luring effects? Are their brain receptors that damaged?? I am 18 and smoked fentanyl for almost a year. Will I always be recovering?

@@astralenlightenment1743 im same boat as you, That was my question too but unfortunately is what it seems like, your brain has experienced the feeling, YOU know what it feels like, how good it feels...now it's just fighting that feeling...forever, day after day, constantly telling yourself "Don't go get it", I'm fighting it myself, I wish you strength but unfortunately it's a road you casbt come back from after that decision is made, "Not even once" is right...I wish I would've listened, I wish you strength

What an amazing way to describe addiction....."loving killing yourself slowly and those around you more than you love yourself and them".

People seem to think that eventually someone will come to save them or they’ll hit the lottery and then they’ll change. Doesn’t work that way. Stay focused and better things will come naturally.

I’ve been an opiate addict since a bad back injury. Unfortunately in the UK the doctors will just carry on prescribing regardless because you hardly ever see the same doctor twice, so they just follow what the original doctor did in your case, prescriptions prescriptions prescriptions. I was on 54 tablets a day at 22 years old, I’m now 28 and on 6 tramadol a day. I’ll get on this shit if it’s the last thing I do!!! Keep it up travis!

I'm proud of you, Travis. West Virginia needs you and people like you to overcome these obstacles and raise the next generation strong and break this cycle. Appalachians are traditionally proudly self-reliant people, and we've lost that pride over the last few decades for a lot of reasons, not the least of which was becoming reliant on the government which has demoralized us, in my opinion.

That statement about not having to hit "rock bottom" before getting help is SO TRUE. A lot of addicts use that as a viable excuse to keep using, sadly. And let's be real here, "rock bottom" for some people is death. When do those people get to quit and live a "good life?" Right!?!?! You can ALWAYS quit when and if you REALLY want to. It's hellashish and hurts, but it's doable. Quitting won't kill you. Staying on it very well could at any time.
