What is with all these growing up comments? There is nothing wrong with having a hobby and supporting it.

Its kinda lame what gaming has become. The spirit of the hobby is gone...its all about ratings, competitive play, dlc, season passes, micro transactions, download-only games etc.

Why are people saying it's called growing up or whatever? What does that have to do with it? Plenty of people play video games who are older. Isn't the average gamer age like in the 30s?

I started doing my videos after being inspired by your first room tour video, going a bit over 7 years now. :) I just did a video on being comfortable selling games, I guess it's a part of my "fatigue" as well, part of growing older and just doing something for so long. But like you, the love isn't going away, it just changes form and focuses a bit. Still, I do feel like I'm letting viewers down if I'm not that hardcore collector of every videogame related thing anymore. It's good you did this video as well, we need to do stuff for ourselves, not for some other people. :)

This happens to pretty much every one as they enter full blown adulthood, it feels like it happens almost overnight. There's nothing wrong with transitioning into a casual gamer as an adult.

Game Burnout happens to the best of us mate. There is no need to worry about it. What I appreciate the most about this video is that when I was first going through video game burnout, I thought I was completely losing interest in games. Google searching "video game burnout" didn't bring up anything really helpful. What I hope is that who ever searches video game burnout will come across this video and understand that it does in fact happen to majority of us. I've been going through game burnout on and off since around 2011. Sometimes I'm unable to put video games down, sometimes I only feel like watching them and other times I don't have any energy to even think about them. I do have quite a large backlog and many of my games are still sealed. When I buy games day one these days I always buy the games that I think will retain their value, and everything else I wait till it's cheap. So even though I may never get around to playing them, at least if I keep them sealed, they'll retain their value in case I need to sell them. Keep well Pete.

I can't believe how much I relate to your gaming fallout. Hearthstone has basically been the only game I've played in the past 1-1/2 years, and that's only a game each morning with breakfast. Starting to get back into enjoying and actually buying games.

Pete, it's a good thing that you're taking a break from gaming. I'm also experiencing the same sort of "burn out" as well. The best thing you can do in this situation is avoid gaming overall, for a long period of time. I'm not talking about a few weeks, I'm saying take like 6-8 months off. Then come back to it strong. Don't fool yourself into thinking "oh maybe I should try different genres of games to keep things fresh." A video game burn-out is one way of your brain telling you that you need to experience new hobbies in life. Adventure into a new hobby like comics, manga, movies, martial arts, or any sport, weight-lifting, etc. You don't have to be good at sports, but just have fun. Remember Pete, you don't owe us anything. Live your life for YOU, because life IS short.

I know this is an older video but I think I'm going through this right at this very moment. I have close to 100 PS3 games and I've only beaten like maybe 15-20 of them. I also have The Witcher 3, Fallout 4 and other games like FarCry 4 on PS4. One of these days I'm hoping to bust down that wall and really put some grind into these games.

I missed a lot of great games that released in the past 6 months. If you have any recommendations on games I may like that went under the radar please let me know. Any platform, even iOS is fine.

I was playing so many PS1/PS2/PS3 JRPGs, platformers and PC point-and-click adventure games before I went to college and then I just stopped. I honestly thought I was done with video games. Then one day, 5 years later, I went to the arcades with an old friend, and they had the big Outrun 2 arcade machine that comes with the mini-sized Ferraris. Spent all my quarters that day, and just before you know it, I became a devout Sega AM2 fan, which of course led me to a passion for the Saturn, the Dreamcast and collecting obscure imports. Your channel also played a big role in getting me back into games and especially the Saturn, but what I'm trying to say is that unless you weren't ever really into games, it always does its circle. Burnouts are totally ok and hopefully you get to live a happy life during that period. I'm also slowly getting back into JRPGs, but comparing to you, I was always into the longer JRPGs, I love side-quests, interacting with NPC, lots of free-roaming etc.

Same happened to me bro. I had a major burnout and I am recently coming back. It happened when I started playing Call of Duty and at the same time, having a pretty shitty year suffering with anxiety. But I am slowly creeping back, my friends are all playing Pokemon X at the moment so I have started looking at different games. I really think game burnouts (for someone who loves gaming) is a very depressing thing to go through, as it feels like losing your THING. I've always been that way in that I don't buy games on release day. It's kinda foolish really especially for us collectors with a huge backlog. Why pay $60 day 1 when I won't be able to touch it in months because of my immense backlog? I wait a few months, hell not even that long, and it will be $20-30 on amazon or at Target. That's what I did with the new Tomb raider. I really wanted to play it but with the holidays I think I got it for $30 about a month after it was released and I still haven't beaten it yet.

I always go through such crazy swings in my relationship with games.... what I have put it down to is just my own changes as a person and what I like and what I don't like..... far cry 3 was my favourite gaming experience ever... but looking back it just filled a gap in my life that I needed filling at that time.... when I tried to give myself to other games like watch dogs and far cry 4, I literally could not even get enthusiastic about them.... sometimes I think it isnt always the games it can just be you and your life and how you change in your opinions to them if that makes much sense.... I am only speaking for myself anyways :)

Very interesting your tastes are changing. As you get older it definitely happens. I'm a 45 year old gamer and back in my thirties FPS and Fighting games were the first that I dropped as well. Awesome to hear you're playing Dark Cloud again on the PS4. I'm currently doing the same thing. Can't wait til I start Dark Cloud 2 again. It's probably in my top five games of all time. Then Rogue Galaxy will be next, as I've never completed it.

Play Games!, stop collecting. Play awesome games... By the time you finish other top games are $20 or less.... No point buying at $60, not worth it. Even Steam at Christmas time games are $5 or Less and top notch games, buy them and it's not a big loss if you never played them. I've been doing this lately and feel much better.

The same thing has happened to me recently. For the last year and a half or so. I have mostly stopped gaming, I kind of just got bored with the games that had been released and I rarely did play anything for that time. Although I recently got an Xbox One, and have really been enjoying Halo 5, and Gow, so I am slowly getting back into it. By the way, I remember when I first found your channel back in 2009, I was a loyal follower for several years until around 2012. It's good to know that you are still doing this. Keep up the good work.

The grind gets old. I use to play rpg's but now I only want a game that last about 30 minutes and then im done. You sort of grow out of them. Then you just focus on collecting rather than playing. It happens to everyone.

ive been there too. lately, ive been burned out with comics. there just isnt any good stories anymore in comics that i just stopped. i decided to give up and move onto a hobby i missed the most, gaming. its funny, i remember you were one of the first people i watched when youtube first came out and ive always been a huge fan. i remember watching all your collection and games i bought recently vids and they really helped me figure out what games are good to get. keep doing vids as long as you can, petedorr, good to see ya again

I have gaming burnout right now. I played the entirety of Trails in the sky in the span of one month and put in over 70 hours in all of them. While playing I was so engrossed in the games that some days I played from morning till night, while others were from evening till night. I finished playing Trails in the Sky the 3rd on the 15th of December (which was a great game to end a great series), and the ending really made want to jump straight into one of the next games in the Trails series Trails of Cold Steel, now mind you I did play Trails of Cold Steel earlier on this year, before I even touched Trails in the Sky, and I was having a great time. Then Trails of Cold Steel I & II were announced to be released on PS4 in 2019, so I didn't end up finishing the game the first time around cause I wanted to get it on PS4. But when I finished playing all of Trails in the Sky, the ending was really satisfying for me, but at the same time I was thinking about whether I should just jump straight into Trails of Cold Steel on PC since I already have access to it cause there was a part of me that wanted to play it right away, and well, emotion got the better of me and I ended up starting Trails of Cold Steel on the same day I beat Trails in the Sky the 3rd. While I was playing through the game, nothing was really out of the ordinary and was enjoying myself, but after an hour or so, I started to feel a bit disatisfyed... and that's when the burnout began. I did end up finishing Trails of Cold Steel a week later on the 22nd. But that journey was a bit ardous, on one hand I remember enjoying the game the first time I played it, but on the other disatysfaction grew even more. Then I started Trails of Cold Steel II, and was just in the middle of the prologue where I just had to stop and take a break from it all. Even though I say that, I still think about the series. And all other games that I try to play in its place aren't enough to keep me satisfyed at all.

I've been pretty burned out lately. My problem is that i have a ton of games i haven't even touched yet i keep buying... which is a great problem to have, certainly a first world problem. I find it challenging to maintain my channel at times since the passion can really fall off at certain points. I think what we do here kind of makes us feel forced so it's not as fun anymore man. I had the same thing, I was going through a rough time (really important exams, lost a very close relative and also suffering from anxiety) and I felt that I lost the only escape I had which was video games. But like everything I needed to have a break, and after almost a year I got back and started playing different styles of games and I find myself enjoying them more than ever. I sell games which I don't like and make a realistic backlog (ex: 5 games to beat before I buy I new release/game). It helped me alot, the concept of beating a game and putting it on your shelf and starting the next game has been refreshing and gives me this interesting sense of progression. Glad that you're back, been a fan for a few years now.

Great to see you back on here. It's funny how things go sometimes. For different reasons, I go through shorter periods where, no matter how much I love games, I just don't want to play them. There's nothing wrong with tastes changing, and moving to new things. More importantly thought, games take a back seat to family, and though I'm some stranger on the Internet, I want to offer my sincerest condolences for your loss. My experience loosing a grandparent make my enjoyment of my hobbies decline significantly. You need time to heal, and it's good your doing so. Take care, and glad to see you back.

I can relate to everything you're saying. I get burnt out now and then and I notice from time to time that my tastes are constantly changing. it makes me sad when I am excited for a new game and then play it and immediately lose interest. it makes me sad when I pop in games I've loved all my life and I don't seem to appreciate them the same anymore. when you make one thing, in this case gaming, such a big part of your life, all of these bummers are inevitable. gravitate towards whatever makes you happy right now, in this moment. when that moment passes, reassess and continue to make yourself happy!

Glad to see you are doing well Pete and are continuing to do videos. I've really enjoyed your videos for the past few years, and have been inspired by your collecting. I personally know what it is like to experience burnout, and the difficulties it can lead to, including anxiety and depression. It can be very frustrating when the things you love the most, feel like a burden and add so much stress to life. Finding out what you value the most (like what games are worth spending money and time on) and focusing on those things can be very helpful. I've narrowed my collecting down to the few systems that I enjoy the most, like the SNES and 3DS, and find that I enjoy the games more. I know you will get back in the swing of things Pete, just give it time and enjoy the hobby :)

I don't play video games much. I have an n64. That's about all I play, but I appreciate your channel a lot. Regardless of what the topic is, if you care about your work and show it, it will show in your product (in your case this channel). Everyone has to go through their hobby and know if it's worth doing anymore. It shows how hard it must be to stay in love with your hobby over time. Everything has been in constant change for the last few years, from what the typical modern game is like, to prices of retro games. It's understandable as a long-time gamer to become dis-enchanted. I think changing your priorities as you get older is a natural part of the cycle, and changing how much time your life revolves around games isn't necessarily a bad thing. Just stick with what feels right to you.

how do you get burned out on video games? i rotate between current gen and retro games to avoid being burnt out on games. also it helps that i stick to one current gen console and not care about other modern consoles.

I'm feeling the exact same way. I can't get into fighting and first-person shooters, anymore. Even time consuming games in RPG's, for example, are just too much of a time sink for me (I don't think I can do everything in Xenoblade Chronicles X; I just want to finish the main story). I've been getting more and more into Indie games, which are no more than 5-7 hours and some are very original and you feel satisfied when completing them. Maybe I'm just getting older (turning 31 this year and I don't have tons of time like I used to when I was younger). I will always play games until I'm dead, but the gaming landscape is changing fast and I don't think I will adapt to it. I may just stick with playing the games I grew up with during the late 80's-mid 00's.

on the topic of fighting games i started a f2p game called Brawlhalla and im hooked.. for a while i thought i was really good at fps games or rhythm games but i just sorta got burned out... most of my game collection consists of stuff like ddr or guitar hero but i realized that im not into games unless they are really challenging or really intense and fighting games seem to be where the challenge is ..i get burned out on games alot recently as well. like i tried to play golden sun and i was really into it for like a week then i just stopped playing it and havent really found the motivation to get back into it.. theres always something that will bring me back into it eventually... glad to see you back and i hope you find the motivation as well

I've been only collecting for a little over 3 years now and I'm falling more in love with the hobby every day, and I keep being fascinated by the entire world and history of gaming but I get where you're coming from, although for different reasons, I do find myself burned out on gaming sometimes, where there are weeks when I'd play nothing nor have the desire for it, it's either because I'm depressed or just don't care for it all that much. It's weird, because as happy as I am that gaming has become more widespread and thus doesn't carry with it the same social stigma anymore, I still find myself completely overwhelmed by how many games/remakes/reboots are being made today, I honestly don't know how people are able to play all of these games and find the time to discuss and talk about them all year long, I still have a huge backlog so I can't hardly find the time to play every new game that's been released but it's almost like you have to to be considered a gamer as everybody does it, whether retro gamers or current-gen ones.. I on the other hand feel quite overwhelmed, and I don't know how someone could sustain the same level of excitement for ALL the remakes that are being made today, I honestly think it's kind of absurd.. I don't know, it's just too much for me right now, but I appreciate the fact that you're coming out and talking about this although it's not a very popular topic. Cheers.

These retro game prices are getting ridiculous. Games over 15 years old... over $25 or cost more than a new release game for PS4 or XBOX 1? Insane. Some games are not even rare, it's all over ebay and amazon. Who price these things?

I don't even maintain an active KZfaq channel but I heavily relate to gamer burnout. Maybe it happens to all of us with age. In my teens and twenties I couldn't get enough gaming and I would get heavily invested in JRPG stories of all kinds and retro gaming. At 33, I find my saturation limit for lengthy games or certain gaming tropes to be severely lessened by comparison. I've tried to find the cause but I think it's a culmination of things: the internet, let's plays, the gaming industry boom, aging, being spoiled for choices, etc. Still on the upside, while I may not consume games at the rate I used to, titles will still come out that grip me. It may happen less often but when it does it's wonderful. Recently I played games like Rogue Legacy, The Witcher 3, Until Dawn, Raid mode on RE: Revelations 2, Shovel Knight, Persona 3, Persona 4, Shadow of Mordor, and GTAV obsessively until I beat them so I'm not done yet. Still taking a break or being more discerning with my gaming choices was jarring at first but ultimately I find is just a part of finding a personal moderation to ensure I enjoy my favorite hobby for years to come.

As sad as it may sound, it's called getting older. I am in the same position as you Pete. I'm in college, ready to graduate soon and making plans for my future and I barely game at all anymore. I'm lucky if I can play for a few hours a month these days. I think it's just our personalities. Some people like Johnny Millennium will always be like they were in high school and get so extremely hype for new releases and game for 40 hours a week and that's fine. Other people just grow apart from gaming. It's not "growing up" it's just changing into a different person. I keep telling myself once I have a steady career that I will get back into gaming like when I was younger.

I often question if my passion for gaming will ever dissipate. However, I do agree with you on many of the frustrations of collecting and buying new modern games that fall in price so quickly. I'm at this point where buying games day one is a rare occurrence too. Glad you're back Pete. I hope you find the passion for video games again soon.

Hey Pete, been a subscriber of yours since around 2010, around that time. I can honestly relate to this very much, honestly for the last three years I've been burned out on gaming. Part of that, truthfully is due to depression, but another part of it is due to changing tastes and it's something that happens to everybody after a while in every facet of our lives. It's not something to be ashamed of. What helped me was to do a little soul searching and try to find what made me love gaming again, I kinda had to start from the beginning with the games I loved as a child and try to recapture that feeling. A lot of these newer games don't have that same magic anymore, and it's difficult to really enjoy something, especially when you have so much weighing you down. They used to be an escape, they used to be enjoyable, and you kinda have to try and really dig deep to find that joy again, it isn't easy at all. I wish you the best of luck, Pete, it's been awesome watching you grow as a KZfaqr and as a person and honestly if a new direction in your channel is the journalism-style cinematography we've been seeing the last year, I can easily say I'm excited for your future. ah yes the getting old comments ha ha. oh dear. these getting "old" comments are from people who have given up on their hobbies or things theyve always loved and are just floating about living a miserable existence because "they are too old" to do anything like "play video games" or "collect figures" or whatever it is they are "too old" to do. dear o dear. In petes case, and i dont know him really at all (sure ive watched tonnes of his videos) but i dont know him personally, but from what hes said.. college and his grandad passing...hes simply just been smart and prioritised the things that are, at that given time, *more important* to him. simple as that. ive been gaming since 4 or 5 (probably earlier) and when i was in my final year at uni i stopped playing games as it was important i got the work done and graduated with a decent grade. graduated and sorted myself out and im still playing my games whenever i can now. ok its not as much as when i was 14 (as i have a job now) but i still try to game as much as i can. something that ive always done and will continute to do regardless of age. dont believe in this "too old" crap.

I totally agree with what you were saying about the retro game prices these days. When I went to the Retro World Expo a few months back, I couldn't believe the prices people wanted for some games. It's really a bummer to go to a convention like that and only come home with a few games because my budget wasn't over $1000. It's so hard to have fun collecting, when it's almost impossible to do so.

Of course I got with the times with direct capture and all, but I still carry the same spirit. Never cared about subs or viewers but playing games for fun. Thank you for the content you've given us over the years, enjoyed it a lot. I'm 31 years old now, been playing games since the days of Commodore 64 and Amiga 500. I just don't enjoy games as as much as few years back. I've taken many breaks recently and none of them have really helped. I guess it's part of growing up and doing too much of the same, as you get bored of anything if you do it non-stop for years. You also have a lot more responsibilities going on in your life so there's less and less time to devote to gaming and quite often you're literally too tired to play video games after a long day at work. Here's hoping we'll get that desire to play video games again some day.

The key to beating burnout is balance. If you're experiencing burnout, in anything, then you're doing too much of it without having fun. I'm a music teacher/director and I got in to retro gaming and collecting because I needed something to keep my mind off of my job. So I've set limits to how much I game and also when I leave the job at the workplace. It really helps.

Man I have been watching your videos on multiple channels forever. Im 25 now and I have been watching since the start. I Suffer from video game burnout. Like you I collect many many games, which has now made me have a huge, seemingly unbeatable back log of video games that are great across all platforms and generations. If I have burn out I suffer through it, one thing I have noticed though that following this plan of making a list of your most excited games to play, to least excited to play games list, really helps. I've felt video game burnouts a lot recently, mostly due to random moments of depression. I always say the hardest part about playing any game is turning the console on, especially when you don't have the motivation to play it. Never force yourself to do something you don't want to, just let the feeling come back naturally.

Great video, Pete! I felt the same for about a year where I wasn't playing anything really, wasn't keeping up with news and wasn't watching Twitch or gaming videos on KZfaq. Sometimes a break is good, but that break does put things into perspective. Like you said about liking other genres, not liking certain genres and picking and choosing what games you want to play rather than buying everything. Especially like you said about the high prices dropping so quickly after only a few months. It's sad about retro gaming, the deals were always so great but now everyone knows the true value of them and how sort after they are. Even used stores and charity shops have ridiculous prices for these things! You are maturing out man thats all. Anything alive must grow just as anything alive must die. You are probably heading back to when you first like video games and why. In other words you have been around the block and back again.. Congratz!! Now for chapter 2 in your life of video gaming.

I know you are big into shmups. Do you still feel the same about those? Darius Chronicle is out for VITA physical in JP or DL in U.S. plus a few others. Just wondering your opinion on them... or the 360 shmups... :)
