Just did this on my 22", used a green scour pad. Worked like a charm. Scraped it first, cleaned away the gunk and loose stuff. Oiled it (use a cheaper oil cause your gonna use alot) and scoured it in a circular motion alot, wiped it till it till there was no more oil (do this at least 4 times). Then follow the video to season it. I used EV olive oil for seasoning. Looks brand new now. Wish I had a griddle carry bag to store it in... Oh well. At least now I'm ready for my Death Valley trip. Thanks @BlackStone Griddles 🍻

Ok i just trashpicked one of these A few weeks ago that was super nasty, super rusty and the guy obviously had no desire cleaning it. After what looks like a lot of use, he probably left it out in the rain. I would have flipped it but the wife wanted to keep this one and so I decided to see what it was like restoring it. First I power washed everything and was surprised how much did not come off. Then I used a quarter sheet Electric sander with about 80 grit sandpaper. This did an absolutely excellent job. However there was some very faded spots which I knew would cover once I seasoned it. Lastly I used a die grinder with a wire brush which ground out a little bit more but also kind of polished the metal out from the roughness of the sander. Then I seasoned it and this thing looks pretty darn good. I know people do not recommend some of those things but this thing was heading for the scrap yard. It looked really bad. If I find another one I'll make a video of it. Good luck everyone.

Excellent practical video. I did essentially the same process for a double sided cast iron griddle. I almost pitched it, but decided to give it a whirl. The flat side was much easier to clean than the grill side. I learned a valuable lesson: "Don't let it get that bad in the first place!"

Thank you so much for posting this video. Just bought our forever home (what military families call the house you buy after retirement). It came with a Thermidor pro oven including a stove top griddle. The entire griddle, inside, down the sides and under, were covered in rancid grease and used like this obviously for years. When I fired it up the house smelled like rancid Grease (thought it was a black finish, not burnt on grease). So gross. I learned I could take the entire section out of the appliance and scrubbed for days with steel wool. When I would feel up to it I would scrub a little more on the griddle plate, the rest came clean relatively easy. Finally, I saw your video. Had no hesitation pulling out my electric hand sander. Already working on the second layer of flax oil. Thank you! thank you! thank you! My home will never smell of rancid oil again. Im making hubby a pile of bacon and eggs in the morning!

@@GorillaJoesBBQ if you got a 4” angle grinder use a braided wire cup brush Or use one in a regular drill. They work great and are a lot faster. I just stripped mine down after being out all winter with the cover half off of it. It got snowed on and was a total rust bucket. It looks and cooks like new now after about 2 hours of work. They’re not a fragile thing as some try to make them out to be and you can’t hurt it. They’re just cold rolled steel and easily fixed with a little time and elbow grease. Good luck with yours and hope you get to enjoy it. They’re a lifesaver when cooking for a lot of people plus it saves heating up the kitchen from cooking inside.

Thank you for this video. Very helpful. But I am dissatisfied with the quality of the griddle. My daughter lives close to me and she has another brand griddle. Though not Teflon or non stick, she has none of these issues and even though I go through these steps, rust always shows up. Never with my daughter and she does no maintenance other than clean it after use. Also, when camping and I take my portable griddle, I'm amazed that no one else has these issues outside of the Blackstone owners. I have to assume it's the metal used.

Took about 1.5 hours of grinding and sanding but I got it back to showroom condition, later I seasoned with flax seed oil. Put 5 coats on. I also cleaned the rest of the body of the griddle up really good but the paint has faded just a bit so I will be repainting it with some good Rust Oleum spray paint.

Did you sand it down to the steel color? I bought a used one as well, and it had sections of rust. I used a grill stone, but couldn’t find any info on how much scrubbing to do. And I was nervous about scrubbing too much. I thought after this process, it’d be smooth and shiny. But it’s not, which makes me wonder if I didn’t scrub enough. Thanks in advance.
@dalepres1
@dalepres1 3 жыл бұрын
@@TraciPrest It shouldn't be smooth and shiny. It takes a slightly rough surface to hold oil both for cooking and for seasoning. The amount of rough in the surface can be debated, and could even be so little that you hardly see it's there, but it shouldn't be polished smooth. If you make it too rough, eventually seasoning will fill it in. How long "eventually" is depends on how much too rough :). The risk in sanding too much is leaving waves or dips in the surface instead of having it nearly perfectly flat across the surface. Sand with a long sanding block, at least a third of the total length. Half is too long because the center will get more sanding than the edges. Somewhere around a third of length will be the best.

So I couldn't find a clear answer online... I went through quite a few paper towels that have a mix of canola and rust on them. I spread them out on the ground and even put a liberal amount of water on them. Now I have read that canola and paper towels are unlikely to catch fire but has anyone had experience with this being a problem? Not sure when it's sage to throw out. I know when I finish furniture with stain and I lay those rags put and wait for them to dry before throwing away.

I followed the rust removal steps laid out in the video. I’m on my third seasoning now with EV olive oil - but there are areas where it looks like peeled paint- not totally smooth. Any advice? Is that ok or did I do something wrong?

Check this other Blackstone video. Gives more in depth advice and from what he said they need to be light even layers of seasoning oil to prevent the uneven layers that will eventually chip off.

I purchased a cover to protect from the elements when not in use. However, it appear that the cover has contributed to keeping moisture trapped under the cover rather than preventing it. I can see rust on the underside of the cover where it come in contact with the grill surface. Can you tell me what has caused this and what it t what to do to prevent it from reoccurring
@davidstanton2475

Just put a layer of oil on it before covering it and it should prevent any of that from happening.

Same problem. I followed the instructions from the video. I've got my griddle looking sharp but I've placed something on top of the griddle so the cover will not touch the top of the griddle. Still, it's difficult keeping moisture away from the griddle.
@venessapixton2314
@venessapixton2314 5 жыл бұрын
You must tent the cover up off of the griddle top. This allows the griddle top to breath and the water will run off the cover due to its weather-resistant material.

@@wildfire60 I keep my steamer covers upside down on the griddle to protect the griddle from the cover that I paid for to protect the griddle. There's something wrong with this idea. Anyway, it didn't help.

I just bought this used and it was rusted bad. I restore grills and use my wire wheel all the time for this kind of stuff. I just tried this way to see what happens and you are so correct. I probably used a pint of oil, a whole roll of paper towels. and a couple of hours scrubbing with that stone. I could have done this in 10 minutes with the grinder and wire wheel.
