Starting Strength

Күн бұрын

Brian Jones tells his story in a very emotional, yet entertaining talk during the 2015 Starting Strength Coaches Association Conference held at Wichita Falls Athletic Club.
Brian describes how barbell training was the rehabilitation tool that gave him his life back after medical professionals had all but given up on his ever walking again.

@@Accuratebrianjones Hi Brian I replied to your email and I have a sport and athletic background. Can you send me the starting strength DVD and handbook. I want to get back my life and I need to live my life and prevent osteoarthritis in my ankle. I’ve already ordered the equipment and am pretty serious about this stuff

I'm 1 month in. My squat has gone from 135 to 220. My press from 80 to 110. My deadlift from 155 to 230. I'm profoundly overweight but it won't be forever. I plan to be EXTREMELY hard to kill in 17 months when I turn 50.

Holy crap Brian this is the most inspiring story I have seen in a long time. I discussed a few claims with you back in the day when you moved to the office and I was out there climbing roofs. That was before the drought brought me back to a regular job and I found any sort of strength training with a barbell. I am just learning about Starting Strength and coming off of shoulder surgery and your message here is infinitely motivating. Thank you for sharing this!

@@Accuratebrianjones Hi Brian I’m in the same situation as you were and I have been told that I’m going to get osteoarthritis very soon because the bones are degenerating and the cartilage is damaged. If I may ask what’s the way to evade osteoarthritis in this case because I’m sure you had osteoarthritis as well.

@@virenbakshi thanks for asking. I saw your email and replied also. I still have it but have kept it to a minimum by daily manipulation of both legs while doing DDPY Yoga. It did get to the point that the gaps are collapsing and squatting was near impossible from the pain. I’m down nearly 100 pounds and have gone to a stretching strengthening and lengthening protocol and feel better than even before the accident

This is an amazing inspirational story of courage (Brian and the entire family) have gone thru. I don't want to take away from Brian's story by victimizing myself thru my own story, but this is so inspirational personally to me. Long story-short....I am 58yrs old and have trained for sports, Bodybuilding, Powerlifting, etc. since I was 11yrs old. Anyway, in 92' I had a serious Football accident and broke my cervical spine and herniated several discs in the lumbar spine. I have rods, screws, etc. I have continued to workout after being told for decades this will end up crippling me (BS). I have been thru everything from surgeries, chiropractors, physiatrists, PTs, 500mgs morphine etc. treating chronic pain. Approximately 1 year ago I found Dr Sarno's "Healing Back Pain"". His philosophy on chronic pain is it is caused by the effect of your psyche on the autonomic NS. To drop all meds and therapies and train intensely. 3 months ago I began "Starting Strength". I am simply amazed how much my strength has increased at my age. I still have pitfalls and go thru doubts, but this type of inspiration has made me confident I am on the right path. The point of all this diatribe is to say THANK YOU BRIAN JONES AND MARK RIPPETOE for helping those that you may never know! Again, THANK YOU!

For the actual "Recovery via Barbell Training" skip to 25:00 or 28:00 --- the rest is sad but we all have those stories of fucked shit happening in our lives... I can regale you with my months in hospital after a bus accident, the bus fell during a rainy day from a bridge, I was so fucked up after.... well, the recovery and doctors shit about never picking up barbells was awful .... that was about five years ago, now I squat way over 405 pounds for reps, and my objective is 500... my other lifts are great too. That fucking accident pissed me off and was "shocking" but I'll be god damned if I let that one thing define me for the rest of my life!! Nowadays I go months without thinking about it... it's like all the right you have, they are awesome if they are taken for granted in any society... being too aware of them daily means they are still a fragile.
