Today, I wanna do a deep dive on a formative album for me when I was in High School - Lights And Sounds by Yellowcard. Let's talk about drum fills, production choices, and arrangement highlights! Also I've got some new stuff on Spotify and I've got an original album with some singles being prepped as I type this. Very exciting!

My personal favorite Yellowcard album is Paper Walls. Ocean Ave and Lights and Sounds were both great, but Paper Walls just had those fuckin JAMS. Five Becomes Four, Takedown, Fighting, just so damn good. I was a bourgeoning drummer at the time as well, and that album really helped me find some new grooves and approaches. The drum solo in the middle of Light Up The Sky just makes me so happy. Thanks, Alex, I guess I'm jamming to Yellowcard for the rest of the day.

Circa 2011, Yellowcard got the opener slot at Warped Tour on Long Island. I could tell they were a little annoyed to be playing at 10:30AM given their caliber but not in a super entitled way. It took almost no time at all for a massive circle pit to form. The entire stage's dimensions replicated in front. Probably about 150 feet by 75 feet, so it was more of an oval. There was so much energy. I've been to a lot of concerts that couldn't match mid morning Yellowcard. They thanked us afterwards for being such an amazing crowd. I'll remember that set forever. Thanks for this video and for resurfacing that memory for me, Alex.

I didn't have a lot of friends that were really into Yellowcard when I was growing up, but I ATE UP their Ocean Avenue album. It was my daily listen. Something about the violin being involved, the guitars being sublime, and the drums were always banging, they had me coming back on the daily. After some time, this album is what helped me bond more with my younger sister. Our mutual love for this band has continued to grow and we were able to catch them live in concert last year. I have never lost my voice after yelling at a concert as I did at this one. It was incredible! All the love goes out to Yellowcard!

Yellowcard got grouped in with pop punk, but I always considered them in the alt rock/emo corner. Their early-mid aughts sound had way more in common with saves the day, dashboard, american rejects, and the promise ring than pop punk bands of that day or the 90s.

This just brought me back. Yellowcard will always hold a special place in my heart. It was the first band I found and fell in love with on my own. I was playing SSX 3, shredding down the mountain and then I heard it, Way Away. I was hooked immediately and went out and got Ocean Avenue and not long after Lights and Sounds. They were in constant rotation in my Discman. I was so excited for Paper Walls, but it was set to come out the summer of graduation. I was going to be in basic training. I was on MySpace constantly, listening the couple of songs they put out, trying my best to know every word before I left. The first thing I did when I graduated bmt, after my family left, was hit the BX, grab a cheap Walkman, the new PaperWalls CD, and I explore Lackland AFB and I was so happy. Every song in Paper Walls just hit and to this day it remains one of my favorite albums ever. Yellowcard played such a huge roll in my life

Lights and Sounds (the song specifically) has a very special place in my heart as well because I was learning guitar via Ocean Avenue 10 years ago and hadn’t heard anything from Lights and Sounds before. So when I turned on the album for the first time and was met with that guitar riff to open things up I was blown away. Still one of my favorite riffs to play. Went on to see Yellowcard play a number of times and Sean Mackin commented on a post of mine when I was reviewing their self titled album back in 2016 when they first called it quits. So cool to see LP3 and Sean play some role in this video. Those guys are so amazing musically and just such kind people.

Phenomenal video! I myself have been very influenced by YC and LP3. Paper Walls made a huge impact on me back in 2008. In particular the whole drum arrangement of Shadows and Regrets. The Lights and Sounds album was impactful as well. Their entire catalogue with Ryan Key (7 albums and 2 EP's) are excellent, EVERYTHING. I will not take the Lift A Sail slander, that is a fantastic album, some of y'all just aren't ready for it yet. Sure, it's missing LP, but you can admit those weren't even suitable for him. It's a mellow mid tempo record that is freakin great.
