Old solidly constructed houses well insulated against heat and too good to knock down, but you also want a living area that is more open to nature and nice days. Integrating the old with the new stylistically might make the renovation cost twice as much and be less functional than you wanted....so...you build what works.

Yep! And the "landscaping" that she thought was random in the dirt could be growing plants of some kind. Maybe something like ivy that is going to spread to the whole area quickly, but not quick enough for the photo. Alternatively, it kind of reminded me of a vegetable patch, but I'm very much a city mouse, all I know about vegetable patches comes from the Sims 4 or Animal Crossing. .

My whole issue with huge windows like that is that I'm paranoid about people looking into them but this kind of aleviates the whole thing with them facing the backyard which has a privacy fence? It's very practical for being so mix and matched

The contrast in the styles creates a timeless feel. Having the modern style added onto the back also can be for privacy from the street as well. from a designer point of view these houses are so fun! You did a great job 👏

it's so interesting for me to see that people in the USA usually love suburban houses and that it's "normal" to see them in your neighborhood, but for me who lives in France that's not usual, most of the time we live in apartments and there's not a lot of houses like in the US

Houses like this are so common in Australia caus heritage overlays often dont allow you to touch the front 3rd of the house. they’re normally i bit better integrated though 😂

i do think it’s quite a neat concept, as long as the interior has been removated to modern and the outside of the front is updated slightly with landscaping, maybe be stairs etc

This happens fairly frequently in Australia where you aren’t allowed to change the front of a heritage home so the extension at the back is ultra modern and square and the front is restored to original. There was a whole renovation series where they did this on the Block.

This is actually pretty common in older neighbourhoods in Australia where the fronts of the houses (usually terrace houses) are heritage listed and you can't demolish them, but they are derelict, so people would gut the inside and at the back do a modern/industrial vibe at the back, whilst restoring the front of the house....

This reminds me of my back fence neighbors when I was a kid. They were six people (two adults, four kids,) living in a tiny two bedroom, 1 bathroom house for about 8 years. The whole house was maybe six hundred square feet. Then, one day they built a huge addition onto the back of the house and it was a giant two story cube with windows. It took up most of their back yard. This house at least looks designed inside. That house was very much a Sims house along the lines of "I want more room but no idea how to build it."

These type of houses are SO common where I live, in Australia's 2nd oldest city. The house prices are super high, so only the rich can live in the city-center historic houses, but they're not allowed to change the facades. So they build these huge modern monstrosities out the back.

I used to be really into a kids adventure book series where one of the protagonists had a house that was frustratingly similar to this. His parents were divorced, but still lived in the same house, just split perfectly 50/50 with half the house modern and the other half very traditional. Geez, this house is giving me a headache, but in a good way.

it’s common in Melbourne, Australia for renovations to Victorian style homes due to being heritage listed. To summarise, you can’t change the front of the house that faces the street and any restorations have to be done by authorised restorers.
