Great info and makes so much sense. Thank you so much. We're 14 hours south of you in the El Dorado National. 2 weeks ago we found a haven for shooting above Foresthill, CA. We went back today to explore more of the 4x4 trails and found so much shooter garbage. We cleaned up the area where we had stopped for lunch. I'm a little shocked. There was shooter garbage everywhere. I could spend weeks cleaning it all up. Is this unique to CA or is it everywhere?

We were camping in a national forest El Dorado in California 2017. Our camp was setup 300 yards away from the camp site. I picked a spot for shooting my Springfield 1911, 45cal into an old dead tree trunk. Behind the trunk was a nice hill. The rounds were going about 150 degrees away from the camp site, in other words almost in opposite direction. Still... someone called the park ranger and he came down there to school me even though I followed all of the rules... On the other hand, this year, 2018, same spot. had shooter all around and I blasted 5 rounds from my mauser kar98k no one said a thing. Other campers came by for a friendly chat about guns, that's about it. I really think you just get jumpy city folks that panic or are just against guns in general calling the park ranger.

Was the park ranger just saying bullshit to get you to move or was there anything else he got on you for? I'm from northern cali and want to go out into the forest to shoot but dont want to get in trouble. Happy shooting!

where are there shooting pits? Is there a link to where I would be able to locate a legit pit to shoot. I always feel uncomfortable setting up a target in an area that is not a normal place where people go.

I'm not aware of designated shooting pits except those you designate following their guidance here. If you do that, you Shouldn't feel uncomfortable.

I go to triangle pit in Olympia, it's open and other people shoot there. It even has a sign listing the shooting hours.

Within the last 2 weeks, I was told that I would have to either possess private property, or get permission from landowners. The only other option would be an indoor shooting range. I spent considerable money for a gun and was given this advice; have private land, or make a friend who does. Thanks for this much more encouraging information.

You can legally carry any firearm openly in any national park, even the ones like Rainier which prohibit shooting. This was made federally LEGAL nationwide in 2010 by President Obama.
@NorthwestMariner
@NorthwestMariner 5 жыл бұрын
Also all BLM land, you can carry a firearm nationwide so long as that firearm is legal in that state. Normally so long as you are legally allowed to own that firearm, you're good to go on all BLM land, National Park Service land, or any National parks regulated and controlled by the National Forest Service.

Pretty much not true in the northeast. All national forests that I know of in MD and VA prohibit shooting except in designated ranges where technically is not even legal to shoot a tin can. Too much control.

Yeah even Iowa pulled that crap . recently you can no longer shoot on a public land anymore unless there is a designated shooting range . Really sucks here in Iowa you can't even go camping let your kids shoot BB guns anymore .
@blackandsmart
@blackandsmart 6 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't it be great to have a few designated areas that are made known to the public? Hikers can avoid them, and since more shooters are going to show up regularly there is peer pressure for enhanced safety and cleanliness. If every shooter is just venturing out looking for a suitable spot that inevitably leads to problems.

One thing I had learned recently you did not add in this video is you are not allowed to be in the possession of a firearm while even drinking a beer it only made sense to me not to be intoxicated. But you better not even have a alcoholic beverage of any kind near you if you're are in possession of a firearm.
@misterlich2826
@misterlich2826 5 жыл бұрын
That is common knowledge and not specific to national forests... Do not handle firearms when intoxicated at all.

mylogylo I only agree with the fact that to many people who target shoot on public land leave it worse than how they find it and it gives the rest of us who leave it better than we found it ( and there are a lot of us) a bad name! As for shooting on public (state forest) land...we are the ones who pay upwards of $50 to $80 every year in licensing fees that is used towards the upkeep and pretty much every thing else! How much have you paid recently to enjoy these public lands that you seem to love so much????

This is called "tragedy of the commons" and is what happens when nobody actually 'owns' the land. The solution there is private property rights, but people tend to respond pretty viscerally to that fact.

What about those of us who want to enjoy our public lands without hearing all the gunfire? When someone is shooting on our public lands the public can no longer enjoy those lands. Why should one person be able to ruin it for everyone else. Go shoot at a range or on private property. Nothing against guns or their users, don't bother going there. Just don't like people ruining other peoples trips to our national forests. Colorado is the worst.

If my private property is anywhere near the forest, you would still hear it. To switch your question around: Why should one person not wishing to hear something force others to silence themselves? Oh, if sound suppressors (misleadlingy called silencers) had the 200 dollar transfer tax removed (they were $5 brand new when that tax was first implemented) a great number of shooting enthusiasts would mount them on their firearms. Gun mufflers are simply WAY too cost prohibitive. I literally can by brand new firearms for less than the transfer tax on one of those. That $200 transfer tax, by the way, applies to every transfer, no matter how old the muffler is, or how many previous owners it may have had.
