Recycling an old Oak Gate Post #1

I've been passing this gate post which was rotting in the undergrowth for about 8 months while out biking, and thought it was about time I took it to the shop to see if I could use it to make something.. Luckily it was Oak so there was lots of solid timber to work with and I ended up with 5 usable blanks, this is the first piece of what we could call the gatepost series ..
In this video Gate Post #1 I decided to use the gnarliest blank first and turn a hybrid hollow form..

I like that you don't usually try to plane or shape the wood into something smooth before you turn it. Sometimes it's disappointing when a woodturner takes unrefined wood and polishes it before turning-it feels like the soul is gone. The opposite of this feeling is when you made the cauldron comet out of a typical woodturning blank 😂❤

A stunning work yet again. That green is perfect with the oak. I'm still astounded by how much I love your "hybrid" works. I'd have thought (were I just told about it) that I would class them as secondary to the "pure wood" pieces, but no, they're equally as awesome and have their very own kind of beauty. Can't wait to see the next 4, regardless of what you'll do with them!

This reminds me of this time when I was a freshman in high school, and I was taking the shop class. We were making wooden clocks, and were instructed to bring our own wood. Most of us went out and bought it, but two of my classmates-twin brothers, who reminded me *strongly* of the Weasley twins from Harry Potter due to their personalities and appearances, right on down to the red hair-went a different route. They went home, walked up to one of the fences bordering their family farm and wrenched off enough planks of wood to make their clocks. The teacher, though amused, did ask them what their parents would think about that. They just shrugged their shoulders and said "They'll probably just make us fix the fence!"

That looks like an old fence post that's lasted quite awhile through all the seasons. After you cut it up and started to turn the one piece, I thought, you know it would be cool if you turned each piece into something and it would somehow all fit back together. Challenge maybe for you.. 😉🤔🤗❤️❤️❤️

For a moment I was thinking you can't just start turning it au naturel - if ever there was a piece of wood crying out for resin that was it! What a relief when the pouring started. The result is a beautiful shape with a swirl of colour that reminds me of the Northern lights. My impression is that the weirder the piece of wood, the more it appeals to and inspires you - would that be a fair statement?
