This beautiful serpent shares our love of sunshine and water, and is a familiar sight to many outdoor adventurers in eastern Australia.
The Average size of an adult Red Belly is 1.5 - 2m, with males growing slightly larger than females with reported sightings up to around 2.5m
This snake is probably one of the most talked about and recognised snakes in Australia.
They generally hang around swamps and lagoons and feed on a variety of vertebrates including fish, tadpoles, frogs, lizards, eels, snakes (including its own species) and mammals.
When hunting in water these snakes fully submerge, stirring up underwater sediment as they hunt to flush out hidden prey.
For its size, the Red-Bellied Black Snake is probably the least dangerous elapid snake in Australia however all suspected bites should be treated as serious and medical attention sought as soon as possible.

I caught one outside the house when my little girl was just two and used to play out the front of the house. I thought it was around 1 metre but it was almost double that! Gave it to the local snake catcher and he gave me a large diamond python to rid the house of rats - the reason the red-bellied black was living close to the house.

The Red Belly can be, and is, found well away from water. They prefer the damp but it is not an absolute by any means.

The one I caught in my front yard proves what you say - we lived many miles from water.

Not as dangerous as some other Australian snakes, like the brown snake or taipan, but can still be dangerous.....
