There is an island full of deadly venomous snakes near the coast of Australia. It is called Carnac island. The snake species that lives here is the Tiger snake (Notechis scutatus). Supposedly there are about 3 snakes in every 25 square meters! That is an insane abundance of dangerous snakes. The Tiger snake is one of the most venomous snakes in the world. Only a few species of terrestrial snakes, like the Inland taipan or the Eastern brown snakes, have a more toxic venom. The origin of Tiger snakes on Carnac island is a bit of a mystery. In this video we explain why. The island is about 10 km off the coast of Western Australia. No people live here, but this area is home to other animals like skinks, birds and rare Australian sea lions.

Snake handler in Australia, '' Ben Avery'' was bitten by one of these a couple of years ago. He was bitten on the thumb, and done everything right, but still had a horrible time, with his kidney's shutting down, and he was on Renal Dialysis for a couple of weeks. Show's the potency of the Tiger's venom.

My uncle was bitten on the finger by a brown slowly floating past a stump in the middle of the river out fishing somewhere at the bottom of NT If it wasnt for the Royal flying doctors he would have died, all is organs were shutting down and needed all the machines hooked up too, it was months before he could be transferred back to vic because he was obviously rushed to S.A. Then more months of treatments at home.. Even if you do survive your body can be permanently damaged by either a brown or tiger and life changing

Sounds like the island off of Brazil with the lighthouse on it. Its heavy population of deadly snakes makes it off-limits to everyone except service personnel for the lighthouse, and scientists studying the snake population.

Have you guys heard of King and Mount Chappell Islands ? They have monster, all black tiger snakes that grow thick and close to 2 plus meters in length. Awesome to see this team still working around Australia.

I was about to mention Mount Chappell Island, but saw you beat me to it! We also have Snake Island in southern Tasmania, in the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, however I camped there once in the 1990s and didn’t see a single snake… 🤣

The islands in Bass Strate have a separate “island tiger” snake growing to nearly 1800mm, six feet. These live on Muton Bird ( Shearwater) chicks. Thus they only feed once or twice a year, as they are limited in the size of chicks they can swallow.

Presumably if all these snakes descended from an original small group, it would be confirmed in DNA testing? Very sad story about the snake showman. Would you be able to get permission to film on Snake Island off Sao Paulo? Very nice film.

The general genetic diversity of populations around Perth is very low so scientists were not able to pinpoint the origin of Carnac island snakes. We tried to get to the island close to Sao Paulo twice, it is not easy.

They are much bigger than the mainland Tigers around Perth probably due to the abundance of food, eggs and seagull chicks.

Garden island is much the same. Not far from Carnac island, but most of the tiger snakes there, have had their eyes pecked out by seagulls, to stop them from taking their chicks. Its available by land, so it would seem unlikely that the snake population is introduced.

Carnac Island is a very small island still in a natural state, there's a bigger much more well known island close by situated in a north westerly direction named Rottnest island. The home of the Quokka and there are also Dugite snakes.

Notes on snakes: 1. They can have a venomous bite. 2. I think that they do not have eyelids, therefore, do they have problems with the glare of the sun. 3. Their "light" range is different from us, therefore do they see more of the light spectrum? 4. They use their tongue to smell. 5. They shed their skins. 6. They are cold blooded. 7. They like heat. 8. They can swim in water. 9. They eat meat, but are then satisfied for a while after a meal. 10. When they mate they lay eggs. 11. They strike fast when provoked. 12. Are they front fanged or rear fanged? 13. What kind of poison do the venemous snakes contain, for example, does the poison attack the nervous system? 14. Does it flatten its head? 15. Can its venom be milked?

2. They have a brille or eye cap, it evolved by fusing both eyelids. As far as we know, they don't have specific problems with the glare of sun. 3. We don't think they see a different light spectrum. Some snakes have pit organs but those are not visual organs. 11. Some snakes are ovoviviparous. 12. Many snakes don't strike at all, even if provoked. 13. Some snakes are front fanged, some rear fangs, some don't have fangs. 14. Main types of toxins are neurotoxins, myotoxins, cytotoxins, hemotoxins. 15. Some snakes flatten their neck when feeling threatened. 16. You can milk snakes for venom.

I note Carnac Island is slightly south of the port city of Fremantle. A nearby popular tourist attraction is Rottnest Island. I have taken this trip. I believe we were also warned about snakes there, but didn’t see any that day. Rottnest is a fun place to visit and bicycle around! Always something to kill you in Australia, but pretty place! I’ve been there 5 times. Always something interesting to see!

A fascinating story. If the tiger snake is an introduced species I wonder if the ecological equilibrium of the island has changed. Has Carnac Island's seabird population altered between 1900 and 2000 and are the tiger snakes involved? Made me think of the introduction of the brown tree snake to Guam.

Yes, this island has a fascinating history! We haven't found any data about the population change of nesting birds in 1900-2000. Silver gulls nest throughout almost the whole year and some nest more than once. It is possible that the arrival of snakes just caused the fact that more gulls nest more than once per year.

The population of silver gulls in the metropolitan area of Perth is much larger now than it was in the past, due to the greater population of humans and their effluent streams providing a rich source of food - landfills, stormwater drains, rubbish bins etc. All of the offshore islands are utilised for breeding and I seriously doubt there would be any evidence of an impact of the snakes on the number of gulls using the island, or the population of gulls in general.

Some snakes have pit organs which help them to sense infrared thermal radiation, but they don’t see it with their eyes. 10. Many snakes are ovoviviparous, meaning that eggs hatch inside a female and she gives birth to live young. 11. Many snakes don’t strike at all and try to escape, play dead, hide their head under their body…Snakes have many types of defensive behavior.
