Mercedes zeropod became a bit of a joke in the F1 paddock but while we were laughing at it, Adrian Newey saw a challenge. The RB20 has been unveiled to the world and despite so clever camera work and lighting, Red Bull haven’t been able to keep the big trick of their 2024 car secret. The media seemed more interested in what Christian Horner had to say about the investigation launched at him but the real scandal at the RB20 car launch is how Red Bull have taken Mercedes' failed design from last year and implemented it on their own car. Today I’m going to check out the RB20, talk about the crazy innovation they have shown and all the parts they have managed to keep hidden, and why this is terrible news for the rest of the grid, so let’s get started.

Yes, so RBR has the floor and the suspension. Also, as stated in the video, it was an inspiration. Red bull changed it to, hopefully, be a better design.

yes the ride height needed to remain in a critical range for it to work. Newey undestood this, so the aero genius did the suspension design cos he know nothing would work unless that problem was tackled properly. On test day all the other cars were bouncing around as they gained and lost ground effect due to their inadequate suspensions.

It's called zero side pod because the inlet slits are vertical. Though I think it's an illusion and the slits are still lateral, just not visible.

The inlets for the cooling channel. Its now small and vertical just like the failed W13. Its not really a zero pod design like Merc, but it does take inspiration from it. Its hard to make it out with the dark paint on the RB

Just like @@LuSt4boost said, but on top of those and to add to the confusion, the "show/launch" car yesterday had no inlets whatsoever as far as I could see. It was the the Silverstone test car and renders had the vertical inlets

LOL you are blind. If you look at the car from the front on the right hand side! They took the Merc zero concept and flipped it 90 degrees clockwise. So it has the upper letterbox and vertical vent from the zero concept. Literally blind.

I can't believe we're this far into the new ground effects era and people are STILL ignoring the differences between RB's under floor tunnels and everyone else's. Newey has everyone worried about sidepods when his real advantage is how his floor works and who it's performance integrates with the car's suspension.

Merc thought that their zeropod design would work too. Presumably results in the sim software and wind tunnel were promising - but reality didn't match the modelling. What makes the OP so sure that Red Bull won't experience similar problems? We'll just have to wait and see - just as they will.

This is 100% a livery reveal rather than a car reveal. I wouldn’t be surprised if Christian got the media team to make something that looks like the W14 to fuck with Toto. Edit: All of you really don’t understand what is the highest costs when dealing with F1. The manufacturing is some of the lowest when comes to overall budget. Let alone manufacturing for a plastic shel, OR CGI.

Good point... last year there were several launch cars that looked nothing like the cars that turned up for PST. If the RBR shakedown model is some kind of B spec with a throwaway body kit to troll the press, it wouldn't be the first time anyone's done that.

This is 100% incorrect. That is not a vertical side inlet. It’s an exit for airflow coming up through the cockpit because of the new cockpit cooling intakes. Red Bull now has their inlets up underneath the big lip which is why you can’t see them with the top lighting. They did not go to a Mercedes style Sidepod they still have their mailbox style side pods but instead of having an underbite, they have an overbite with the extension of the lip above the side pod not below it. Because the air moves so quickly having the inlet below, the lip actually causes it to be more efficient and cooling as well as allowing the big wash over the top of the sidepod.

I believe there will be narrow horizontal inlets under the upper sidepod extension. This opinion is based on the fact that the RB sidepod is wider than the W14.

The upper surface area of the sidepod is similar to the one in previous year, so it's not a zero pod. And this is because upper sidepod surface and floor shape are linked in making the ground effect work. A zeropod will not work in this system.

I've seen people speculate that the RB20 has a vertical inlet and also a letterbox inlet hidden underneath that upper lip.

Let's wait and see whether or not they will destroy the competition, until they hit the track, it's difficult to tell. I personally have a good feeling about Ferrari though, I admit I may be being a little biased as a Ferrari fan, but judging by changes made and the data from track time, it seems promising, I just hope they sorted out the tyre issue which was really costing them last season, the speed was there otherwise. In saying that, how much they have improved, remains to be seen, same with others.

It would be very funny to have seen Merc struggle with the zero sidepod design for 1 1/2 season and just when they adapt the Redbull design, Redbull switches to the zero sidepod and actually makes it work😂😂😂

There is no RB zero pod concept! We've seen the car without its fairing and the cooling package fills their sidepods as they are. Interestingly, Merc's cooling system doesn't fill half of their sidepods, so they actually do have scope to shrink the packaging. The RB will not end up as a zero pod concept unless they have developed an entirely different chassis as well as this one. Which can't happen under the cost cap.

What’s the risk really? If it doesn’t work, they roll out the RB19. It was 0.3 sec clear a lap in race pace. Would be surprised if teams closed that lap. Copying the RB19 doesn’t mean they understand the RB19.

As it has been said, "there is more than one way to skin a cat" and that certainly holds true in science and engineering. Racing an F1 car needs both and also a little bit of luck. But without the minds to make it all work, the end result will always be disappointing...

I don't see anything that looks like a Mercedes 0 sidepod design like on last years car. I see a long sclupted sloping reward sidepod that has Oracle on it, with maybe what some might say is an aggressive undercut to help channel air flow downwards to help seal the downforce genreated by the floor.

Actually this makes a lot of sense. Newey was aware of porpoising, due to his experience. Mercedes found something genious wat worked very well in computer simulations but due to the porpoising, could not make it work, had to raise the ride height and all advantages did not show, and this distracted them. But for sure other teams like RB did some simulations, too, and if you can keep the porpoising at bay, it might be the key to be even faster.

I see that Ferrari is also having about the same thing. It's vertical and a bit smaller then Red Bull and they have also a big inlet that every team has, except Red Bull. But they do have it. So that is 2 teams.

From the outside rb20 and w15 both blend parts of the rb19 and w14. Obviously the floor is the most important part and we can’t see that comparison. Could Mercedes turn out to be competitive. 🤔

Lol no. Everyone just made an RB19 copy. This is light years ahead of efficiency over the car, if you listen to the points about the cooling and weight reduction the RB20 will have. It's going to be even faster.

That is in no way a zeropod lol besides the air duct being vertical, the new red bull design has nothing in common with the Mercedes zeropod concept. The red bull sidepod has an enormous undercut where the mercedes had no undercut whatsoever because it had no sidepods at all.

honda engine is not powerful and all the teams know underbody of redbull,redbul knows competitor is now much closer and there engine is much stronger then there so they thing lets try mercedes zero sidepod maybe it wil work for us,but they can also be wrong and if that happens they wil loose 0.6 seconds to competitors ..
