The scene between her and the alien communicating was so creepy and ominous. Imagine you get a confirmation that there's life out there and they warned you to not contact them again was crazy.

Btw the grave of the 4 yr old wasn’t that girls, it was just meant to show that the story she gave the detective abt who she was there to visit was a lie. Weird scene bc we already could figure that she wasn’t there to pay respects for her dead. But basically she made him think that grave was her dads when it was actually just some random child from 1909

Not that I think she was right to respond, but Ye Wenjie wasn't just upset at the murder of her father. From what we've seen, her entire life has been one in which humanity has been barbarous and untrustworthy. Every time she or someone around her has tried to do something right, they've been punished or betrayed. Everything she's worked for in life has either been destroyed or stolen from her. When she's sending that message, it's not from the mindset of someone seeking petty revenge, it's from a scientific mindset that has lived a life in which humanity's cruelty has been as consistent and predictable as any of the other physical laws of the universe she's studied.

THE SHOW OPENED WITH HER WATCHING HER FATHER GET BEAT TO DEATH, AND SHE KEPT GETTING BETRAYED BY PEOPLE. SHES JUST DONE WITH EVERYBODY.

ngl while its fucked up, i kinda get her reasoning. I think that her choosing to respond is more a cry for help than her condemning humanity to an invasion out of resentment. humanity has proven time and time again to be barbaric and cruel. during china's cultural revolution ,where china was purging anything or anyone with ties to the west , her father was basically executed because he taught physics and believed in the big bang theory- western stuff. During that time if you were an intellectual or had anything from the west(clothes,books,etc), you were dead or put in state in where you'd wish you were dead (tortured). This went on for a whole decade and its estimated that 1 to 2 million people died and their economy was crippled. what makes it worse is that ,similar to the girl on the red guard that killed Ye Wenjie's father, alot of people in those groups probably didn't have any remorse and would do it again if they had the chance. She was also very isolated from the world so for all she knows the rest of the world is like this(it kinda is). so from her perspective the advance civilization thats communicating with her can't be any worse than what she's living in.

Although ya Ye Wenji's is trash for what she did, it made a bit more sense in the books because of the sheer isolation she had rest from of the world while confided to the Red Coast base for 10 years.

I think Ye Wenjie got inspired by the action of the girl who killed her father. They both were kinda similar, both suffered in life. At the end the 'executioner' responded, "Even now, I would scythe him like wheat". And so Ye Wenjie (she might actually got over the death of her father) seeing the 'executioner' showing no remorse, decided she's not gonna forgive the world for all the suffering she had.

Check out the book series. Maybe before season 2. Def better in my estimation. They did a good job adapting but like most, the source material is goated. If you have heard of the dark forest theory,the 2nd novel is called the dark forest and is the best scifi writing i have ever encountered

details i realized after rewatching: the vr game setting is explaining not just their story but the aliens biology too, prolly why they can dehydrate fast enough to be alive when rehydrated is cause they evolved to their surrounding environment, crazy story telling too. also the fact that its called "levels" instead of story, notice how they can stage their history without it being a story

Ye Wenjie is a very bold and smart character. She's entirely aware of the political and changing society of man. Hell she wasnt that old when she first called upon the Santi, theres no way she would've known, even as a scientist, the future of the earth dying, of wars, political shit that just show the worst of humanity. You can say the things in China now are better than during the time of the People's Revolution for her class and family. But why does she do it? Because she angrily states out that "Fuck you, we are not worth saving. I do not care about judgement, its my answer to this cruel world." Its fascinating because you 100% know people like her, someone who's willing to drag people down with you when they hold onto a very strong grudge. Its simply good and believable writing. Although she did not fully think this decision, its clear the death of her father pushed the extremeness and her purpose to the science she studied.

I've watched a lot of scifi where there's a lot of characters and drama. And most of the time... it's just ... dumb. Dumb filler. Cardboard characters reading their scripts, or nonsensical characterization. But DAMN if this show doesn't make me care a lot about all the characters. I find myself just as interested in their dynamics as the big compelling mysteries of the show.

I'm quite disappointed at the adption where they didn't show any change of opinion and salvation from Ye Wenjie (which directly results in the happening of story in the Dark Forest). She experienced the kindness of the local villagers around the Red Coast base when she gave birth to her child, and the end of Cultural Revolution, after which she was recruited as a respected professor at Tsinghua University. In her late years, she ordered the execution of the the Adventist members in the ETO, and she stated clearly that she didn't intend the destruction of the earth like Mike Evans do. So she confessed all the secrets to Wang Miao and the police so they can make plan about Mike Evans, and she told Luo Ji the key information as her redemption.

Crazy how she folded the whole world,but quick question depending on how time works in comparison to Earth, in theory if they have speed of light or FTL speeds of travel , they'd... lets say they need ten years , Earth would have a hundred years in preparation(if they knew)so to prepare, and you see how fast we advance on selfish desires , we'd be on some timing fr if we were faced with an interplanetary threat,thiugh i think we'd still lose and im sure of these Aliens can blink the stars for morse code and can clearly keep an eye on us and use timers on brilliant scientists they can more than stop us from advancing too far during the time dilation or whatever

That's one of my gripes with this adaptation sadly. It doesn't explore Ye Wenjie's mindset and character enough, so that her actions feel natural. In the book, we see many stretches of her life, mostly bad and her dealing with isolation, but we also get glimpses of hope when she lives with people who respects her and make her love life. It makes her more human and that she was just a normal person capable for positive thoughts, but a series of bad incidents and her perception of humanity as a result made her push the button. In the Netflix series, she kinda feels flat and a bit dumb and evil. Just my opinion. I would recommend the books for anyone who is interested. They are so much better imo.

Now remember this moment for future episodes. She KNOWS the aliens are coming to fck things up. She replies "Come i will help you conquer this world" Remember this moment
