the proton unfolding thing was explained a lot more in the books, they unfold it into 2 dimensions where a single proton in 2 dimensions is massive, they have multiple failures but they managed to stabalize it, etch citcuits onto it, making it like a planet sized computer, then it was put back into 3 dimensions where its just proton sized, sentient super computers

It's a lot harder to dismiss collateral damage when you're actually seeing it. We do understand why all those people died, and we may still agree that it was necessary after the fact, but the show doesn't want us to feel comfortable with it. The directing and the visual effects, even the idea of the scifi tech, is so cool and well executed and yet our enjoyment is still undercut by how brutal it is. The subway scene in Invincible leaves you with the same feeling, but the subway scene lets you see all the death while knowing that omni-man is the bad guy, and that the passengers were killed for no reason. The judgement day scene lets you see everything, but, for me at least, you're still left believing it was justified. good show

💯 A lot of people have issues with Auggie because she is morally conflicted about her invention being used to murder 1,000 people. We're at war, we get it, but she has a right to feel remorse about something she created for the good of mankind being used as a weapon. She's experiencing what Oppenheimer felt about his work on atomic fission.

The interesting thing is that it was possibly not a good idea to take them out at that juncture. The San-ti had abandoned them. When Evans eventually had to tell everyone that the Lord had decided they all needed to die, the cult probably would have fallen apart. A lot of people would likely be willing to talk at that point. Killing them was sensible given what was known at the time, but ultimately possibly counterproductive.

The books have entire chapter dedicated to how they step by step built the sophons! They took 11 dimensional subatomic proton and unfolded it dimension by dimension and stabilitizing it. Lowering it in each dimension it got exponentially big till it got to 2 dimensions, which was large enough to wrap the entire planet. Once unwrapped and stabilized it was easy enough for them to etch circuits on its surface and install the program. Once that was done it could compress back to its original size with all its capabilities programing intact. When in 2D unfolded state it’s large enough to make the entire universe wink at you or in 11D subatomic state, capable of travelling at speed of light and small enough to etch information on human retina!! They have technically locked the human scientific progress on earth... Sophons will interfere with any scientific experiments that is crucial for progress!!!

A very interesting thing that i don't think will be mentioned in the series (probably), is that the eye that we see the sophon unfold into actually first showed itself when the San-ti were testing the sophons. The eye attacked them by concentrating their own stars' energy at a point, and the San-ti had to destroy that proton in retaliation. This implied that there was an advanced civilization or civilizations inside the proton(in dimensions we cannot see) that launched an attack on the San-ti for attempting to mess with there world.

Augie’s invention wasn’t a weapon itself, it’s basically a super material- a super strong material that can keep its strength even as an incredibly thin strand. It’s a lot like the strands in Carbon Fiber. Yes it makes for a terrifying weapon, but it’s more useful for pretty much anything that needs super high strength and low weight. It’s the kind of material we could use to actually build a space elevator (no current material is strong enough), or any number of other things that would be a huge advantage in preparing for the SanTi to arrive. That’s the real reason they considered her a threat, not that her fibers could invisibly cut something but because of all we could build with it.

If they raid the ship, those on board could wipe or destroy the hard drive before acquisition. They're messing with the ACTUAL PARTICLE EXPERIMENTS AT THE SUBTOMIC LEVEL. the particle accelerators accelerates two protons to near lightspeed and crash them into each other. A sophon gets inside the accelerator and replace one the protons. So when the crash happens. the sophon can do some hocus pocus inteference ans give completely nonsense data. And the experiments can go literally no where. With fundamental particle physics dead, no real breakthrough can happen in science, therefore no real breakthrough for humanity, despite what technology we come up with with the knowledge we have right now.

Sophons are proton size. They can pass through any matter with no issue. A box isn't going to stop them from spying on ya. Humans do figure out a trick of sorts though.

Love you guys, really on the ball with this wacky headbender of a show. By the way the Sophons are protons, which are particles; they are even smaller than a single atom. It's ... really out there stuff imagining being able to stretch a single particle into a space as big as a planet.

This episode was so good. Just wish they added a little more from book 1 and ended the season on this episode. Instead of adding 3 more episodes of book 2 onto the end of it. Made the end of the season a bit unsatisafying, but I can't wait to see how they adapt season 2

100 million gigabytes is a 100 petabytes, we already have 100 terrabyte SSDs, so its a thousand times larger than we have now, but considering 100 GB drives came just about 20 years ago, its not THAT far fetched!

From what I understand, a Sophon is a super computer that is the size of a world, or however big they want it to be. They unraveled a proton and hid this super computer in the 4th dimension (it goes up to 10) and is completely undetectable. Due to its nonexistent mass, it could move at faster than light speed, moving ahead of the fleet and allowing it to prepare the way for the San Ti. The Sophons are linked using quantum entanglement, meaning any and all communications and movement will happen on the other side, regardless of distance. There is no hiding from a Sophon either, not even if they built a feraday box like sheera alluded to. It exists beyond the 3rd dimension and is too small to be locked out. Theres is only one way to hide your intentions from it, which we will find out later.

My honest opinion on why they chose to use the nanofibers in the show: Wade just wanted to try them out. He said it himself, they’re traitors to humanity. Maybe there was a way to spare them, maybe not, but I don’t think Wade cared enough to try. He wanted to strike back at the San Ti with a show of force.

Another commenter typed it already, the nanofibers cuts so finely that any damage to the hard drive would be easily fixed

@@Anon-qp3kt That's the explanation given in the books, yes, but they never justify that in the show so I don't consider it applicable. When you're adapting a show so differently from the book you can't assume the information from the book will be the same in the show. The only explanation they gave in the show was that it would incapacitate everyone on board without giving them the chance to destroy the information, anything more you have to interpret for yourself.
