Still in shock and awe that RDR1 hit a Nintendo platform before (officially) being available on PC. Can't say I have much faith in Rockstar to do anything that wows me like RDR2 did anytime soon.

Hopefully the physical version actually has the entire game on the card, rather than being a code in a box or requiring some kind of download.

I suspect that the Switch is what this port was about from the beginning. The fact that the game runs almost locked to 30fps at 1080p on Switch tells me that the porting team were targeting it specifically. I think the PS4 port was an incidental thing that came about after the Switch version was mostly completed and they had a code base they could move to other platforms, but didn't have the time/budget to add anything fancy to it beyond FSR 2.

This is a great addition to the switch library. I wish sleeping dogs would also made it over to the switch as well too.

Due to pricing changes and issues with the Canadian dollar, this port actually ended up retailing for more than when it originally released. Very cool...

It appears that some players have found that the light around camp fires can be broken at times. As in the campfire doesn't cast light or shadow. Hopefully this can be fixed in a patch.

It really does look incredible on the Switch OLED in handheld mode. Especially the red and black menus and screen filters.

I look forward to picking this up on sale for £10 in a few years, definitely not paying anywhere near £40 for this

I’m very happy with a Switch game running at the native 720p in portable and 1080p docked and runs well, better than on the original consoles. So many Switch games run at around 540p and still go much lower in frame rate so this is very good. Should look good on the Switch OLED in portable mode.

I bought RDR used for xbox360 and played it on Series X and it just looks pretty great. I think auto-HDR can be enabled (not sure though, it's been a while) and it basically runs at a locked 4K. It does NOT get the Series X FPS boost so it's still locked at 30fps. Since the game was developed with 30 fps in mind, it's obviously still very playable. I do like that the the orignal physical release comes with an actual printed folded map of the open world to check out, which can actually be relevant for some of the missions and it's just cool to overhear a conversation where someones says "it's just north of X" and then you put down the controller tp check on the physical map and it's just... cool and immersive.

I'm one of those who was disappointed RDR didn't get a proper PS5/SX remaster, but at the same time, I think the Switch version has a reason to exist. Switch somehow never got a GTA5 port, and having RDR on the go is nice. Nintendo gamers don't get mainline Rockstar games often, so even if its years late, it's cool to see it exist.

I always wondered why a developer would ever decide to use Anisotropic turned low/off.. I pretty much never found much if at all a performance penalty for using it, even on computers years ago.

Cool! Now we can just sit and wait until it goes on sale and drops to a reasonable price that it should have launched with.

Would love to see a DF Retro on Mirror's Edge, i remember being stunned by the graphics and the cool "gimmick" of PhysX on my 9800gtx+

Gave the Switch version a go and found myself putting in quite a few hours. Much better than the PS3 version I’d attempted to play the past few years. Not bad.

Was waiting for the DF review! Other KZfaq channels claim they have tested the Switch frame rate, but they didn’t say anything about the drops at the farm. I’m traveling soon and I never played RDR1, so I’ll give it try. Thank you for a great informative review (:

I remember playing the game on both 360 and ps3 back in the day and being baffled by how badly the ps3 version looked. At the time I didn’t realize how hard devs had it when trying to port to that system. And it really shows with this game. The 360 version was far superior.

It's been awesome to have this portably, but it's a bit of a shock to the system as well. My last two playthroughs of this game we're on Xbox One when it was added to backwards compatibility, and then again on the Xbox One X when they had an update that took advantage of that hardware. So I'm used to this game incrementally looking better and better, and now back here on switch even in portable mode it's a little fuzzy and I feel like the draw distance might even be slightly worse than it was on 360. It's still a phenomenal looking game the art direction is great. About between that and then two playthroughs of Red Dead 2 which in my opinion is still the most gorgeous game I've ever played, this one is showing its age more than I remember. Of all those playthroughs I've had of this game I also don't remember the horses being so damn janky Either way I'm still excited to go through it again, this was my favorite game ever made... Until they made a sequel lol

While it isn’t the most revolutionary port, if you’d told me at Switch’s release that we would get RDR for it one day, my mind would have been completely blown tbh.

This is impressive. I had this on PS4 and best it but I wanted to play this again and in handheld mode at times + I sold my PS4 game. This was one of my favorite games of that era and having a great time playing it again especially that I can take it on the go when i take my son to soccer practice with 1.5 hrs to kill. Hard to get in game time as a dad, but this is huge for me.

I have been playing on Switch and for me it is well worth the price. There is a lot of content here and even though it released 13 years ago it is still a high quality game. Rockstar games put a lot of love into this game and i never could have imagined i would play it on a handheld back when i was playing on the PS3. It still holds up and has fantastic voice acting.

I haven't played it docked yet, but handheld on the OLED is impressive. I've ignored the high price point and not complained like others (I get it's a ridiculously high price, but the cost of everything is massively higher than it used to be and remember, Rockstar are not forcing you to buy the game people), because I love RDR and have wanted to play it portably since I've had my Switch. It's ran perfectly well for me so far and I'm just so surprised it runs on the Switch. I'm wondering then, that given this runs fine on Switch, maybe the original version of GTA 5 can be ported over. I would love to be able to play that portably on the Switch.

I just got the physical version a few days ago. I didn't buy the digital version. I own the Greatest Hits version for the PS3 and the 360 version that Rockstar rereleased for the Xbox One years ago. I would say the Switch version is my favorite. The PS3 port is pretty bad. It runs at like 20-25 fps and looks bad. While the 360 version had 2x MSAA and ran at 720p native the PS3 port has no AA at all and it runs in 640p. The PS4 and Switch ports are the best way to play this game now. The Switch port looks better than the 360 version. I wouldn't even bother with the PS3 port unless you were really desperate to play it. But the thing that makes the Switch port so great is the handheld portability. You can play RDR anywhere. I don't regret spending $50 on the Switch port. You get RDR Undead Nightmare and all the GOTY edition content on the cart. No download codes. Two full AAA games for $25 each. Hundreds of hours worth of content. A game from the golden years of Rockstar. The pre GTAO years. It's an amazing games. It looks pretty good on the little Switch screen in 720p as well. I have bought other ports of games that were ported to Switch from other more powerful systems and it's kind of hit and miss. The Crash collection on Switch looks good Spyro looks good as well. But Destroy all Humans didn't look that great. But RDR looks really good.

This should have been 60 fps on ps5 and series x.

The great part about this port is the from the emulation prospective with the switch version. I can now play rdr on my steam deck at 30 to 45 fps through yuzu and a 60 fps fps patch. It's also a good alternative to xenia on pc if you don't have a great gpu. I would of rather had a remake especially considering half of rdrs map was already remade in rdr 2 even the basic layout for mexico but at least something good came out of this. Rdr ages like a fine wine any way.

Buying this at full price is just enforcing Rockstar’s bare minimum efforts. Supporting this is letting them know that consumers will eat up just about anything. Goodluck with Rockstar producing quality anytime soon.

With how little effort they seemed to have put into this port, I'm surprised they got the game to run at 1080p on the Switch at all, much less with a mostly stable 30fps.

I just bought a series X about a month ago, and forgot that I had bought rdr on 360. I didn’t know they had upscaled the resolution until recently. Might try to play through it soon.

I played RDR on PS3 and over RGB Scart cables on a Crt. This Game looked so good. The dark areas and the sunlight gives RDR a really realistic touch on a Crt. I think these Consoles Ps3 and Xbox 360 were created with Crt in mind and not HDMI LED TVs. The most Games from this Generation looks and runs better on older TVs connect with RGB scart cable.

Benefit of Switch version for PC players is that it's very easy to emulate and run at 60 fps, the ps3 and 360 emulators are cool but can be jank with this game. Still want a native port.

Def getting this on switch. Enjoyed the gameplay and story of this one more than the second. In the second every enemy used the same guns the entire game which made no sense and the story become nonsense after like the second heist. The multiplayer on the first was also better so it’s a bummer it is not included

So happy about this port, wish more games had this treatment such as Fallout or Dark Souls 2. I honestly dont get all the hate, its not like the Switch could have run the game if it had a remaster and its clearly currently running the game at its maximum capabilities. I agree the princing isnt the best but there are many previous titles such as this that had the same pricing problem and nobody said a thing. Examples for this could be Dark Souls, Skyrim, Dying Light, The Witcher 3, Diablo 3 and many others, all of them released at full price. I kinda understand the hate it gets on behalf of Playstation and PC owners but for us Switch owners makes no sense. One last thing, I am pretty sure the pricing problem is because Nintendo is releasing the physical version, we have many previous examples of this.

Based on recent interviews of T2 Ceo stating that releasing a PC version is up to the Developers it's likely that we have another GTA trilogy remaster situation where Rockstar and T2 asked to have it be ported on all platforms but was not willing to pay much money and there for the Devs only agreed to port on to 2 platforms instead which is just ridiculous for a company as large as them.

This all seems like it was meant as a Switch only project up until the last minute when some suit decided the sales would be not as big as they hoped due to the lack of improvements and a PS4 version would be needed as well... with some slapped on features like FSR.

I was hoping you would cover the odd shimmering around the horse and character when riding on the Switch version. I never checked a PS5 video if it is also a problem in that version. Otherwise fantastic port! Still don’t like the price but still loving the game again.

Im getting this on Nintendo only if the complete game is on the cart (screw digital downloads) and when its around $20.

the switch anti aliasing is lowkey decent how they worked it; it polishes up important objects edges first (characters, center of screen) and everything in the background gets left out so thats why it shimmers my guess they had to do it like that cuz it would probably cause a decrease in performance

If the new release would run at 60fps on my PS5 (and maybe even on my older PS4 Pro) then I'd have wanted it day 1. I know some people don't mind, but I really hate 30fps, for any game. I recently replayed RDR2 on PC. What a delight. Still hope to see a PC release of RDR some day, but until a 60fps patch comes along (or the PC release) I'll, sadly, pass. For the Switch, however, seems the 30fps lock was right. Makes me wonder if my future will see me trying the Switch version on my Steamdeck, at 60fps :)

Interestingly, the button glyphs appear to retain the artistic style of the original Xbox 360 version, whereas on the PS4 version they were simplified to more generic button icons.

Recently bought the Xbox 360 version on disc for 10 euro On my Series X it also runs on 4k 30fps

If I wasn’t trying to finish my backlog before Q4’s influx of games were going to be getting I would’ve definitely picked this up on my Switch. Perhaps I’ll get down the road 6-12 months on a potential sale. The $50 price point is a bit steep, but, if it were cheaper I feel that many would be saying “such a great game I easily would’ve paid full price for this” Can’t satisfy everyone 😅

Its still a 'great' game and offers a LOT of hours worth of gaming that won Game of the Year - now bundled with its Undead Nightmare (although removing its 'dead' MP mode) so that Nintendo and Sony gamers can actually play this classic on their favourite hardware for the first time in its 'Original' condition, boosted resolutions keeping the 'experience' intact isn't a 'bad' thing. There are 'Many' gamers whose 'first' console maybe a Switch, PS4 or even PS5 and never played RDR or 'could' play it on their hardware. If you don't think paying £40/$50 for what was considered the Game of the Year 13yrs ago to play on 'Hardware' you currently game on, whether you 'played' it before - its still going to be technically 'better' than the PS3/360 version just on resolution and 'stability' of frame rate alone - RDR2 was '30fps' too so its 'consistent' or not, then don't buy at launch - wait until its at a 'price' you deem worthy. I'm sure it will drop in price if people are reluctant to pay that... I do agree though, that compared to Quake II, RDR's price does seem somewhat steep but then that price is what a 'AA' game tends to cost these days and is less than the £/$70 that 'new' games are costing that may 'look' graphically superior but maybe don't offer as much depth or value in terms of hours worth, maybe have to wait months to be 'consistently' playable with updates/patches, wait months, years even to get the 'full' game as its drip fed as a 'service' game, be riddled with micro-tansactions, season passes etc etc... To me £40 sounds great for an Amazing game with so much value in it compared to £70 for 'modern' games that often are more 'style over substance', over in 8hrs and have many issues at launch - but as I said it does seem 'steep' for a basic port with what seems 'little' effort to 'enhance' the game beyond a resolution bump and more stable 30fps game-play - I'd argue its keeping its 'integrity' and artistic design intact for 'preserving' the Original experience and selling to those who cannot play it on their preferred Hardware as it 'originally' was - like Xbox gamers can...

Developers did amazing job. Magical I would say. Original ps3 version was very demanding and they somehow managed to provide better fps on switch.

The Switch port might not have 4k but that doesn't stop me from using the mclassic & 4k gamerpro to increase to 4k & have the image better.

How are the cutscenes compared to the PS4 version? Is the stutter present on switch as well?

Really disappointing that this is not getting remastered with the RDR2 engine without changing the voice actors, but I'd love to play this again on portable mode.

I'm mostly interested in how it might be to emulate this Switch version; theoretically it would be the easiest to emulate, or at least easier to emulate than PS3 and truly make playing this game at 60fps accessible

lod is clearly improved on the switch, in your own lod section the buildings have transitioned to a higher quality lod the flag on the red building to the left is completely formed at 4:46 but yet to appear on the xbox 360, plus you buried the massively better load times

I loved Red Dead Redemption when it first released, I've put in nearly seven hours since Friday on the Switch version. I love it even more , I think it looks great . I had a nice amount off point's saved up as well , that knocked nearly £10 off

I got the original physical copy last week. I've been playing the game on my crt tv and it smooths out the 30frames per second. Shimmering etc. I truly believe the ps3 was still meant for the old tv's.

Haven't played this since original release. 14 years is just the right amount of time. Plus it flows a sequel to rdr2 now. Just awesome to play it on the switch oled. Hardcore mode is actually intense

I feel like the switch version shows how much headroom there is on the PS4 version for improvements

Honestly... This to me looks up there with totk and xenoblade 3 as one of the best looking open world games on the switch imo. Yeah there are hints that it is an older game, but it looks nice. I've been wanting to replay this for a while now and i have a decision to make. Do i emulate it on pc and enjoy the 60fps ultrawide goodness, or do i enjoy the comfy experience of playing games in bed on my switch. update: I decided to go with the switch version, I just couldn't be bothered mucking around with Xenia in this case, and the portable aspect was too much to pass up. Looking forward to getting the hard copy in a couple of weeks time.

I will say, I'm very curious what the next Nintendo console will have hardware-wise. If they stick with Nvidia, i wonder if we'll see DlSS and framegen utilized. Could allow it to really punch up

I actually prefer it's a straight up port than when they try to include every single visual effect in existance and do a port at 600p or something like that. I would say a locked 30 fps with 1080p resolution is fantastic. Making a port technically more complicated is not necessarily a better port.

To be fair, the ps4 isn't being pushed and the switch is at its limits. PS4 could easily run the game at 60fps at switch settings. they didn't even try, even the ps5 doesn't run it at 60fps

For PS4 to take advantage of FSR2 is pretty amazing. Thanks to AMD for not locking that feature!

Do these ports have the headless zombie glitch in Undead Nightmare? It’s a glitch the prevents progression unless you die or load save. I hope it’s been fixed.

This is a special release, I've wanted a full open world AAA game on the Switch since launch. Early LA Noir was amazing I will say. Having RDR1 bringing the RAGE engine to the Switch makes me hopeful one day we may see GTA 4/5
