I was a Marine in the 1970s. The carry handle on the M16A1 was called a carry handle because it was designed to be used to carry the rifle. Drill instructors are going to yell at you for everything. That is the nature of recruit training. But that is only during your introduction to military service. Remember when the rifle was designed. 1st was the AR10 in 1955. The AR10, like other rifles of the era, had a carry handle. Look at the FN FAL, it had a carry handle. The AR15 that the M16 was developed from also had that carry handle. Both the AR10 and M16 also used the carry handle to mount the rear iron sight because you needed room for your face to get proper sight alinement. Very few of the rifles of the era had scopes attached. I would carry the rifle using the carry handle in the field. I was an infantry marine. No one jumped down my rear for doing so. We didn't have the sling systems that are used today. So you carried the rifle in your hands. Some of the time, you might use the carry handle. I hope that dispels the myth that you don't use the carry handle to carry the rifle.

Very interesting that the bdc on the scope didn't work out for you! I've heard from at least one other source that it worked fine. Unfortunately I don't have access to a range that will let me shoot past 100 yards for me to test it out. There is a video from InRangeTV where two guys used the colt "retro" remake in a competition with distances varying from point blank to 300 yards. One guy had a 20 inch and the other had a 14.5 inch gun. The guy with the 14.5 inch gun zeroed the scope for 50 yards which according to his ballistics table, essentially made it a 50/300, and proved effective in the match. If I could build my rifle over again I would do exactly what you did with a flat top and a red dot. I've been debating either doing just that, or investing that money into more ammo and training.
@tsafa
@tsafa Жыл бұрын
The bullet drop on the scope did not even match up to the range drum which originally came off of a colt. So for example when I set the range drum on the carry handle at 300 400 and 500 yards, the range adjustment on the scope did not match up as I shifted my head back and forth between the two aiming systems.
@MsDasnake
@MsDasnake Жыл бұрын
Interesting, so the iron sights were more accurate than the scope🤣. What a let down
@tsafa
@tsafa Жыл бұрын
It's not a question of accuracy it's a question of proper calibration of the bullet drop compensator. The carry handle came off of a Colt so I'm not surprised that it is correctly calibrated. The scope is a cheap Chinese knockoff. They probably don't even have the facilities to test it. With some experimentation I could figure out and relabel the holds. So for example I think the 300 is probably closer to 400. I would have to do a lot of experimentation with this to figure it out. I don't particularly love the reticle in the scope, so I'd rather use the time and ammunition for other projects. Of course there's no guarantee either of that this cheap scope would hold zero over a longer period of shooting... so that would be an accuracy issue if it turned out to be the case.
@gp556by45
@gp556by45 8 ай бұрын
@@tsafamuch of that has to do with the BDC being calibrated to the flat top, not the carry handle. When you mount the optic to the carry handle, it's above the initial calibration by a few inches. That makes a world of difference on the calibrated point of aim down range.

Got a question about the carry handle mount. When I mount mine, the bolt blocks the iron sight channel. What is the proper way to run that bolt so my picatinny is bolted down secure but I can still use my irons?
@tsafa
@tsafa Жыл бұрын
Took me a minute to figure out what you meant, but I assume that you mean the bolt that runs through the picatinny rail and attaches to the carry handle. I think you have a badly designed picatinny rail. My real completely inserts into the carry handle and the bolthead is flush. I'll try and put up a video later this week demonstrating, but I think you basically need to get a different rail. I would order it from Amazon so that if it doesn't match up correctly, you can send it right back.

The one I have came with my Colt. I'm not sure which company manufactured it. I don't recall any markings on it. If it has the adjustable range drum in the back that splits into two pieces, it's a good one. Search my channel name and range drum to see some more close-ups of it.

I have a Colt H-BAR A2....Sporterised. That's no bayonet lug and a half circle bolt carrier, instead of full circle like the M16A2 bolt carrier. I bought it in Destin Florida in 88 or 89, while I was on my first leave from the US Army. So I'm also a product of the 1980s US military. So no regular GI would have had any kind of glass back then. In fact when they sent me to Desert Storm they told us we could NOT put our own glass or sights on our M16. I had a 203 so it didn't bother me that much. What about these carry handle, picatinny rails, that has a step down to put a few inches of picatinny on top of your A2 handguard. It would be far forward like a scout rifle but if it would hold a zero, I think I'd prefer that. They used to be everywhere but now there only one manufacturer left and it's a little spendy. Is the drop mount any good with a red dot? Anyone?
@tsafa
@tsafa 11 ай бұрын
Thank you for sharing your military experience and what you used at the time. I'm familiar with the drop-down rail. That Anchors in a similar way to the carry handle. It should hold zero, but I would not expect 1 moa. Probably closer to 3 moa. The carry handle on this AR is removable and I get a picitini rail on the upper receiver. I'm mostly just using the carry handle for demonstration and training purposes. Mostly to make people aware of different phases that AR progressed through.

Love the carry handle look with an optic on top. Just kind of confused with what it actually does. Is it just for the height? Like the carry handle is basically already and optic so do we just put a red dot on top of that and use that as the main optic?
@tsafa

With traditional rifles the stock drops down, so the sites can be right on the barrel. Like an AK-47. The problem with this is the recoil causes the gun to lift up. The AR-15 was designed with the barrel to be in line with the stock. The recoil is straight back with very little lift. Since the stock does not drop down, it is very uncomfortable to bring your head all the way down to the level of the barrel. That's why the sites have to be raised up about 2 3/4 inches. I'll do a video on this explaining it as well.

Another interesting note, I must own an older model because mine has mil dots going vertically and horizontally. I've since lost the instructions so I'm not quite sure what they mean
@tsafa
@tsafa Жыл бұрын
Yours is actually the more expensive version that is still available. What you do is measure a personal object of known height or width in inches using the mill dots then multiply by conversion factor 27.77 and divide by the number of Mills you measure in the reticle. I believe you have to then multiply by .4 for that particular scope to get your yards. that last part is not standard. That's specific to that reticle measurement for that scope.

I'm usually able to get them cheaper on opticsplanet with the discounts that I get right now they have 10% off. Get yourself under text list for discounts that they sent to your phone. For the rifles I really like the Holosun 510c for CQB work. Very big window. Get that with the 1/4 riser the have. For shooting 300 yd plus with the Red Dot I like to use 503g with the HM3x magnifier. That has bullet drop compensation in the raticle. I have done lots of reviews on both. Search my channel name and the name of these Optics and it should come up. For pistols 507 acss.

The Carrie handle was a holdover from their original design for the charging handle it was like an upside down trigger on top of the gun and then carry handle protected it and gave you a place for your rear sight it was not originally intended to hold an optic
@tsafa
@tsafa Жыл бұрын
It was holding an optic by the 1960s. Look up the Starlight scope. It may not have been intended to carry an optic in the original prototypes but considering that the 50 year history of the AR platform, that's pretty early in its life.

The forward assist in the dust cover were not there in the beginning either, but it was there early enough that we can say that it's been there for almost all of its life. The video is not intended to be accurate to the day that they started using it or stopped using it.

Its not a "carry handle" because it "carries your optic". You have the wrong reticle for mounting on top of the rifle. Most BDC picatinny reticles are meant for flat tops.

This is not a setup I was looking to keep long-term. The carry handle came off and I went back to an optic directly on the flat top of the upper receiver.

Look up Starlight scope. It was an early version night scope during the Vietnam war that went on top of the carry handle. Maybe the hole for the optic was not there in the prototype, but considering the AR platform is 50 years old, it was there pretty early in its life.
@texasPITBULL54
@texasPITBULL54 Жыл бұрын
@@tsafatrue but your statement about calling and optic carry point as you call is just fud lore. Yes they have adapted the design by adding the mounting hole was an afterthought on how to attach something. The handle is there because as stated before to protect the original charging handle that was on top of the receiver there were multiple versions of the charging handle as well.
@tsafa
@tsafa Жыл бұрын
@@texasPITBULL54 I was told by the old Vietnam Vets many years ago that drill sergeants would get very pissed off if you carry the rifle by the carry handle. It was a Vietnam vet that told me it was only meant to carry a scope. That's what his drill sergeant said. Without me being there when it was designed or in the military when it was first introduced, I can see the muzzle control safety issues if you hold it by to carry handle. I don't think it makes sense that a military rifle was designed to be carried from there.
@texasPITBULL54
@texasPITBULL54 Жыл бұрын
@@tsafa actually a nether reason why they didn’t want guys using the carry handle was there was a doctrinal change in how we carried our rifles. Before you would carry the rifle on the sling or in your off hand carried at the balance point. Then there was doctrine change to have your rifle more at the ready not exactly how we would consider it today but similar.
@gp556by45
@gp556by45 8 ай бұрын
The reason why the "carry handle" is called the carry handle is.. complicated. The entire reason why it is there is a leftover from factory forging, and Military brass getting involved. The original reason is because the inital versions of the AR-15/M16 had it's charging handle on top. Much like a FAMAS. Eventually, it changed to what we know today. With that change, the rear sight stayed in place. So as not not "create a snag point". The "carry handle" stayed in place as a brush guard of sorts because the military during the 60s had some odd idea that a weapon created snag points, but somehow completely neglected that every single bit of a soldiers equipment and body was a snag on everything around him .
Public service announcement- don’t buy cheap carry handle sights!
