Same. I lived in Washington State as a kid, and family were big BBC fans. Doctor Who, Blackadder, Red Dwarf, etc. We recorded them on VHS. PBS channel KCTS-9 would have live telethons/marathons of Red Dwarf and chatting with cast members in between episodes. Donating certain amounts you'd get different merch.

Another fun fact from the novel. To project Rimmer's image actually doesn't take much, it's the rendering him that gobbles enough power to light up a small city. This seemed very science-fiction-y impressive at the time, but when you look at how much power drainage and pollution just stupid bitcoin mining uses up, they were actually kind of low-balling it.

I love how you've both swung around to really liking the Dwarfers. For me what makes it work so well is that they are ALL flawed characters. There's no chisel-jawed hero, no All-American (or Brit), no Skywalker looking to get his gal. And once you invest in those characters, their nuances are what makes a lot of the humour, not only the dialogue. Eg. Who can forget the moment that Kryten first calls Rimmer a Smm...smm..smeggg...heeED :)

The difference between Star Trek and Red Dwarf is the expectation of humanity. ST expects us to achieve a harmonious future, RD sees us trapped in a monotonous life.
@austinseven4720
@austinseven4720 8 ай бұрын
Pretty much. The novels talk about how humanity originally set out to explore the stars but found nothing, so they gave up and stayed in the home system. I think it reflects real life. People hope for Star Trek but the Red Dwarf concept seems more likely given the vastness of the cosmos, the problems with relativity and the need for FTL tech to actually get anywhere! Plus humans are a horrible, arrogant, confrontational species, so we're a, long way from Star Trek style harmony.

The thing is... Red Dwarf actually does have its own internal consistency and continuity, even the tech has some logic to it through out. You'll be surprised at what comes around from time to time latter, and much latter. Also, things like Tiny Robocop Lister, they still had the machine that made him that way to begin with at the end of that episode... no need to go and show him being returned to normal and ruining ending on a joke, since its a given they would fix it all back to normal.

Fun tidbit, despite the timeline being erased as discussed with the script and several other timelines also being erased, Lister in the newer series claims to remember playing pool with planets. another one of the consensus all time top 10. Yet again Season/Series 4 episode that is excellent as a pure sci-fi concept exploration even setting aside that it's funny as hell, and like the end of Queeg and Confidence & Paranoia, Red Dwarf can come up with a reset button "it was all a dream/none of this happened" that's funny enough that it doesn't feel like a lame cop-out that cheats the audience. Like most sitcoms, Red Dwarf sort of has a rotation as to which member of the ensemble is the focus of a given episode. Red Dwarf does a lot of "Rimmer episodes". Not too many "Holly episodes", particularly so for Hayridge as FemHolly. As Kryten becomes a more prominent part of the cast you've probably noticed Holly drifts more into the background. As Red Dwarf becomes ridiculous star trek, Kryten becomes Dorky Mr. Spock, and often elbows Holly out of the exposition/science officer role. But this is a "Holly episode" and a damn good one. She even directly refers to Rimmer as a Smeghead. And the debut of the Space Corps Directives! Stick a pin in that one going forward.

I know I’ve said it before but I love rewatching this with you both. I grew up watching this back when the series started. I live in Canada and we could watch it on pbs through Seattle. I would watch endless pledge drive marathons where they would even get some of the stars to travel to the station to try and promote the show to keep pbs going. Many vhs tapes recorded later I was a fan for life.

This and Futurama have long been my two favorite shows! I've been watching Red Dwarf since the early 90s here in the States on PBS. It's so awesome to share in your journey, thank you! It's a treat I get to look forward to every week! Y'all rock! Happy holidays!

The novels, which are more serious in tone, link together the plots of several episodes, with this one being a particularly important core of the story in the "Better Than Life" novel. However, it involves a black hole rather than a white hole in the book.

Also The voice actor that played Talkie the Toaster was the David Ross, who also played the original version of Kryten but was not available to commit to the role when they decided to write Kryten in as a regular character.

You guys are so good and remind me so much (feeling old now!) of how we - me and my friends - discussed this and other sci fi at the time. You have to remember that in the eighties and nineties, being a sci fi nerd was not cool. We were weirdos that no else wanted to know. We were outcasts from society - no joke. The only places we could go and feel comfortable & belonging were sci fi conventions and we were lucky to be able to afford one a year. It's SO different now! If you start reacting to Blake's 7 as well, I swear I will lose my mind!!!! Thanks for all you do.
