Anthony shares an important message with people whom may be considering a purchase of a Slider or Cooter of the genera Trachemys or Pseudemys. Red Eared Sliders (Trachemys scripta elegans) are the world's most common pet turtle. That sad fact is due to their ability to withstand subpar conditions and, most importantly, their ability to lay a very large number of eggs. This makes it easy to farm them, but doesn't make them a suitable pet for the vast majority of people that choose to keep them. There is a huge difference between the large ponds in Louisiana, where they are farmed, and the small aquariums around the world, where they live out their sad lives, which is most often the case.

No need to be so negative about it, this sounds like common sense but most, and I mean MOST people don't know shit about this and expect their turtles to forever remain small and compact, which finally leads to something like abandoning them.

Try 40 years. They can live to 60 even 70 years old. When I adopted my RES from The Turtle Rescue League in Mass. I was obligated to make arrangements in my Will upon my passing that she be returned to the League estate. I have a separate acct for funds for this. THAT is the way we should take care of animals that will probably outlive us. Turtles, parrots etc. #AdoptDontShop

I love baby turtles, but I have a sad story to go with it :'(. We had a baby painted turtle named snazzy. she was to young to tell the gender. One day a lady came over and gave us an adult female slider (which we still have), but she told my mom she might be able to give her a baby land turtle for snazzy. Now, I loved Snazzy and I didn't want her to leave because I caught by chance at a camp ground. This may sound weird, but the moment she clamped down on my finger I new I'd love her forever (the bite didn't hurt). And the adult slider we got came from neglectful owners, and I DID NOT want snazzy to go there. After my mom assured me snazzy wouldn't be going to the neglectful boys home I just sat silently. the reason the lady had so many animals is because she got them from the boy so he wouldn't neglect them. the lady left....and came back with the cutest little turtle I had ever seen. We did the trade. I missed snazzy so much. When I woke up the next morning, I saw the baby turtle was sleeping. We got him a vitamin lamp but we didn't get the bulb yet.I said look mom, he's sleeping. He wasn't sleeping. The fact I said he was sleeping in the first place made me feel like the worst person on the entire planet, even I didn't know it was dead when we got it. One of our tadpoles had gone missing to. Two things made me feel better though. We had found the tadpoles wedged behind the filter, he did it on purpose because he had finally turned into a frog. We got him out and put him in the baby turtles tank. The other thing was that snazzy hadn't gone with that horrible boy, and is still alive to this day. Currently living in the n baby turtles tank is the frog which is named prince, and a Malayan box turtle, which they let me name clammy. Any one who read this I thank them thoroughly. I'm glad that someone cared to know :').

Years ago when I was on a vacation in Florida with my daughters they all bought a RES. They were tiny as shown in the above video, but two of them died due to improper care. The 3rd one, however, got to be huge like the one in the above video. We took care of her for a good while even after our daughter left for college. The turtle kept getting bigger and bigger and we felt keeping her in a 100 gallon aquarium was cruel so we took her to our local nature center where she'd be rehabilited and re-introduced back into the wild in the Mississippi Delta. They said out of all the turtles they've rehabbed our turtle was the best looking and most healthy. I guess I was doing something right. Lol.

I bought a 55 gallon tank for my older turtle and gave the new turtle her 30 gallon, then in two weeks after I keep them apart ima let them meet. Don’t want my pond turtle to make my turtle sick

I have 2 males that I rescued from an abusive pet shop in Bosnia. There were like 30 or so in a yellow bucket and it made my heart brake. As soon as I saw the one of the turtles had half of the tail bit off I had to take him. And then I saw one with an huge swollen eyes so I took him too. They have been in my care since 2013 so they are 7 years old. The first that is missing half his tail has 0 issues and he is doing fantastic, he's not head shy and he's kind of stupid. The second is fully healed and he's amazing. None of them ever bit me. The second is bigger like half a centimeter then the first but both of them are like very short for their age. I'm a young adult, and the second one fits on my palm and half of my fingers. It's like I've been blessed. I still love them very much, and I give them attention every day, and thankfully they never had scale rot or bone disease. I give them a lot of natural sunlight and they are perfectly hydrodynamic. But I still wouldn't recommend a turtle because they poop a lot.

I walked outside of my apartment complex in Florida and I saw him sitting by some rocks.. he was so small and cute! 11 years later and I still have the little guy. My uncle also found a baby turtle outby a pond and brought him home to me. They've both grown so much! I really want to upgrade their enclosure but I don't know how well a pond would do in NC. And the specific problem people don't realize with these turtles- is WHY it's bad to have a "big" turtle. Besides their need for space (deep water to swim in is important for their health - exercise), these turtles poop according to their size... they poop bombs. When you turtle grows, their waste will grow too. Sorry to be so descriptive- but people don't think of these things when buying a turtle. Kids can think a big turtle looks cool, and maybe they even think they can provide a big tank. They don't realize the TRUCKLOAD of work it will take to SIMPLY keep their water clean, all week long. Big poop means that- even if you have a completely-filled, 90 gallon aquarium... 90 gallons of water, to the brim of the tank!!! (Talking from experience, here) Even if you have a canister filter, filtering that tank. EVEN THEN, after _just three days_ of changing the water, it will turn yellow-brown, due to the turtle's poop. Back when I had my (adopted) RES turtle, (mind, she was only 7 inches long, and I fed her only every two days) her poop would... disintegrate in the water, and tint the water to a filthy yellow in just 3 days. Do you really want that for yourself? Do you realize that you will be a slave to the turtle's needs? And they are _lots_ of needs, if you care for it properly. I love animals, and I cared for her with all my strength. But to have a pet that just requires *SO MUCH of your effort is NOT worth it.* Don't commit the mistake of buying one of these guys. Reptile rescue groups are spilling over with them, they can't take in any more. And natural waterways are getting swamped by abandoned Red ear sliders. People get too sick and tired of changing water, so they release them in waterways and these turtles out-compete native species, due to their size and hardiness. That's why they're called an "invasive species." If you want a pet turtle, there are MUCH BETTER alternatives to the RES. Did you know that there are turtle species that actually stay small all their lives? SMALL = less poop = water stays cleaner, longer = your water changes will be less of an ordeal. Don't misunderstand.. you still need a good filter, weekly water changes for the health of the turtle, and working UVB bulb and heat lamp (to help the turtle absorb calcium and avoid metabolic bone disease.) But the maintenance will be A LOT easier than a slider. *Here are some smaller species, if you're looking into buying a turtle, and want a good, life-long experience:* You still need to do your research for their care. 1) Common musk turtle (4-5 inches) 2) Three-striped mud turtle (4-5 inches) 3) Spotted turtle (captive-bred) (4-5 inches) 4) IF you have a POND, maybe a Southern painted turtle (5-7 inches) Pretty big (in terms of poop contamination of water). So a pond is preferable. There are some other smaller species, but they are very rare and very pricey. So these might be the most commonly available turtles... Don't make the same mistake I did!!! Bigger is NOT better in choosing a turtle species. A smaller species will make your life much easier. Trust me.

Don Hernandez That's awesome that you were able to solve the poop problem... I was lucky enough to find a paradise-like home for her, thanks to a kind couple who have a ginormous, beautiful pond, and are experienced with keeping reptiles. They seemed like "angels" to the rescue for me! I still almost can't believe she ended up in such a great place. Wish this were the case for every RES. Poor things sometimes end up suffering in cramped places.. like buckets (face-palm) or ridiculously shallow aquariums, for the rest of their lives..

Forest Hymn HA! This is interesting you mentioned this. I became caregiver to a beautiful red-eared slider (named coffee bean) when I was a teenager. This was waaay before KZfaq, so I didn't have a lot of information, and I never thought to ask a turtle expert, sadly. She grew fast and was taken care of (I was her primary caregiver, not my parents), but yes! I would always ask myself, why is the water so dirty so fast after I just cleaned it!!!??? I loved that little girl. I did eventually give her to a cousin, who I felt was better able to provide. I didn't even mind doing the cleaning; I just know I didn't have the capacity to provide everything she needed. Thanks so much for your comment! Have a wonderful day.

So I bought a pond an somehow it got out of the pond and I lost it for a year. It burrowed itself in the ground for a year then came back. @@ReannaLovelace no eating and restlessness is a key sign of a female on her period. Female turtles NEED to make a hole and dump eggs. They wont be fertile but if they stay inside her they can break and rot inside not bueno. I recommend letting her out where she can dig and also come back in the water when she needs to.

There are also documented reproducing colonies in Ontario as well. Turtles can all hibernate, so given the right depth and substrate they will make it through the winter no problem. Problem is they will hurt populations of painted turtles and others found naturally in that area. Thanks for the info in this video! Most people don’t know just how large they can get!

I wish we could have gotten a smaller species instead but we’ll stick to what we have. We don’t have much money to keep up with the maintenance in the long run but we recently bought a 40 gallon tank after keeping them in a 10 gallon one for so long. Do you have any tips on how we can maintain our RES on a minimum budget level?

I feel happy, If you get a tank mate and he is not over a year old I would suggest separation until he reaches a year old because older turtles that are not over 5 inches of shell length are known for hurting baby turtles not over a year old, also I would separate a big aquarium tank with glass in the middle because that's what Im currently 200 gallon and the small turtle always look at the other turtle through the glass when he's basking and the other one does the same, I did this so when I put them together they get used to remembering each other and living together, my older turtle is named Apollo and my younger Mars because yes I love Space

Man that big turtle reminds me of Robot... Remove the moss covered shell, change the gender to male, and make him greener, his shell color as green as a jade gemstone and his stripes on his arms a brighter green and that's pretty much him. Although he tends to wiggle a lot more when we hold him but at least he doesn't bite us. [Very domesticated.] I miss him rn.

I supposed I could have woredd that a little bit better... Too bad im on mobile but, i meant to say, remove the moss covering the shell, and that big turtle will look just like Robot.

I just found one on the Highway in northern ca. At first my daughter and I thought he was a rock or Boulder. I had to stop traffic to get him before he got smashed. A truck almost crushed him. I took him to the wildlife center but they wouldn’t take him because they said he’s Invasive. So now he’s in my backyard and I’m trying to find all the info I can. I’m working on making him a pond. I bought the pumps and filters. I’m just trying to figure out what to use for a pond since I rent and my Landlord doesn’t want me digging holes in the yard . I named him Dwayne The Rock .

Owning any kind of pet you don't know much about really isn't the best thing to do by running out and purchasing one. They are a lot of responsibility and are very time consuming and much more expensive if you want to do it correctly. Just remember what you think is cute and will make a great pet please don't do it if you have young kids whom are trying to talk you into this because they will become your responsibility

dina sanchez so true. My boyfriends son was young and wanted all these animals. He got two red sliders, two small lizards, fish, 3 birds, 2 snakes, 1 bearded dragon, 1 water dragon, 1 blue water dragon and doesn’t care or provide for them one bit. All he does is show them off to his friends and how cool it is to feed them once every 3 month... Half these animals died btw. One snake died and both water dragon died.. one day his son called his dad and said the water dragon had a snatched tail... we never found out what happened... I tried to save them but I couldn’t so sad. The kid says they don’t need much maintenance.. but his dad and I get to get them food and clean their cages all the time. They need worms and crickets and turtle food and lights and pumps and filters and and it’s not cheap... just saying parents. If you’re going to get your kids animals make sure they understand it’s a responsibility, time consuming and not a tool to show off. They’re living beings who need attention, care, food and money just like we do...

I just found one of these today in the street in UT as big as the 2nd one you showed. We don't have a great water source nearby but I do own a sulcata and a desert tortoise about the same size. Can I put the slider in with them or do they have to be in water?

Hi! Thanks for your video! I just rescued one baby Red Ear from busy street near my home day before yesterday. At first I thought it was a some kid toy, till it move. It was raining the night before, and probably got washed away, but there was no pond around the place I found it. How ever I choose to keep him/her, but I never have a pet like this before, and I don't know what to do. Can you please tell me how to feed him? Do you put anything in the water for the chemicals? He is in tap water now.

This invasive species is pretty detrimental to local aquatic life as they pretty much eat up everything; the fish, the amphibians, and the crustaceans, and few things actually eat them.

Old post but its recommended to offer your turtle lettus everyday. As for feeding babies once a day, teens eat everyother day. Big boys and girls should eat every 2 or 3 days. Personally mine is a big girl so i feed her lettus everyday and some shrimp every 3rd day
