Lisa (Rachel McAdams) stabs her captor (Cillian Murphy) in the throat with a pen.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Terror rides the night skies in this thriller from horror auteur Wes Craven. Lisa Reisert (Rachel McAdams) is a young woman with more than her share of anxieties about flying. However, when circumstances demand she go to Miami, she gathers her nerves and books a seat on a late-night flight. Sitting next to her is a handsome and charming man named Jackson (Cillian Murphy), whom she already met in the airport, but once their jet is safely in the air, Lisa discovers he's not the pleasant traveling companion she imagined. Jackson is part of a terrorist cell plotting to kill the head of Homeland Security, and he's decided to draft Lisa into helping him. While Lisa has no interest in abetting Jackson's plan, he soon reveals he's holding a trump card -- his compatriots are holding Lisa's father hostage, and will kill him if she doesn't cooperate. Haven’t seen the movie, but from all the clips I’ve seen so far, he just seems like he’s sociopathic and manipulative. When they think they’re in control and want to manipulate people further, that’s what they’ll do. False sense of some type of security. Plus, he seems like he’s pretty confident he’s won whatever fight they’re having right here.

Her going into that story was the perfect distraction. Of course he’s going to want to listen, because her opening up in a vulnerable way like that makes it seem as if she’s reached a point of emotional exhaustion. It was a brilliant move to lower his guard by stroking his ego to feel like he’s successfully worn her down into helplessness and submission, only have her suddenly show it was all a bluff and come out swinging and still full of fight.

I love this scene, because I actually thought the same thing he thought: something along the lines of "it wasn't your fault", "there was nothing you could have done", etc. And I started rolling me eyes because it was such a cliche thing to say, that it was obvious he was going to say it too, like countless movies before this one. And then she just replied with this badass comeback and stabbed the guy in the throat. I love it when movies make you think they're going to do something you've already seen a million times, and then change it up. some of the best seasons of The Simpsons used to do this a lot too!

I love Lisa's change throughout this whole flight she goes from kind, closed off to brave and determined the backstory of the parking lot at knife-point says a lot about her, that she wouldn't let another person overpower her what's funny too is that the pen she uses here was the only piece of merchandise from the movie, they wanted a Bart Simpson one but couldn't get the rights

I think it's interesting here, how Jackson spoke aloud what HE thought she must be thinking; that what happened to her was "beyond her control"...I mean, to be honest, I feel like Jackson's character is really attracted to Lisa, but he decides to quash every feeling of sentiment towards her because he knows he has a job to do and she is getting in the way. In this moment, though, I think he was not only guessing at her thoughts, but maybe speaking aloud the excuse that he used in his own past when he "had" to do bad things. The way he says those words, "that it was beyond your control", is in a familiar, final way, like he's said them to himself before. I have no idea how Jackson got roped into the evil business, and this obviously doesn't excuse ANYTHING he's done, but I wonder if there was a time when he felt like he was dragged into the evil life with no way out, and his only way to escape emotional/mental collapse was by saying to himself: "it's beyond your control." That's why her response is so interesting, too---she didn't let life hold her prisoner by allowing it to tell her she was powerless. Instead, she made a vow to herself and used that tragic moment of her life to become stronger. Her response surprises/intrigues him, you can see it in the brief flicker of his eyes before she attacks. Sorry for getting on a soapbox...I saw this movie for the first time the other night and am still kind of reeling (it's 2020, I know---I'm late). Anyone else have thoughts on this?

Yes, because as I read. Jackson doesn't wants to do anything with being an assasin. He wanted to have a normal life I think with an actuall family. But again, he needs to do things and has an unhealthy obsession with Lisa. Thats what I know for sure.

I agree. You can see a glimpse of that again - through Cillian's brilliant acting - in the moment he accidentally tells Lisa that all Keef's family will die. Notice his subtle reaction when he says "If someone wants to send a big brash message, that's their business."

Fun Fact: In the original script, the monster pen used in this scene was supposed to be a Bart Simpson pen, but since the filmmakers couldn't get the rights to the character, they decided to settle on the monster pen instead.

This scene is Oscar so worthy from Rachel Adams. She made this and the rest of the last 20 minutes of the film. I can see this on a treadmill for motivation and just feel the suspence and action pump the endorphins kick in.

When I was younger I was on a trip to New York with some family, and on the way there we stopped at a hotel in Tennessee and in my sister and I's hotel room, this movie was playing. I remember watching this scene and screaming and quick turning it off. We threw pens at each other and laughed, but every time I'm on a plane now, I can't help but think back to this film and the deadly zombie pen.

I think both of them are great! Actually I’ve been writing a lot lately, short stories, possible screenplays & I would love to see them back together in a sequel to Red Eye. 20 years have passed, but he hasn’t forgotten.... You didn’t see Jack die, he was shot but he could’ve just passed out. If Cillian & Rachel are available it would be brilliant. The Sequel: Red Eye 2. Jack’s back & he’s SEEING RED, the girl that got away this time will be the woman that will stay with him forever! .. 😍😘
