@ohhwelltestchannel8550 John and Anthony are on a boat shortly after BSSM was released, being interviewed. The guy says that he doesn't like the song Funky Monks... and John replies with the quote above
"We never practice it. We barely know how to play it." Nails it.

Not only nails it it’s damn near better than the original version

To be fair that for them means "barely know" because on all the other songs they feel comfortably improvising around and this one sounded like a CD version

"So they chose a song that we really barely know how to play..." "So we've never ever played, and we didn't rehearse it, but we're playing it for you tonight, because some guy requested it..." then they proceed to nail every freaking compass and note of the song Gotta love RHCP man

Mellowship Slink in B Major would be the first to be played amongst the ones they haven’t yet done from BSSM, flea already performed it with some other cover band in LA. As recent as last year or this year.

I guess the reason they dont play it often it is because this song needs a 5 string bass, I think not always Flea has one

this really shows how good they are if they really never rehearsed this (except possibly at soundcheck, if they knew the song requested). They remember the intro and rhythm line, even the lyrics. Everything is spot on.

The song was released as a B-side for the single "Desecration Smile". As Anthony said at the beginning, the song was played at the request of a fan who won the radio competition. Although Flea never went on tour with a 5-string bass in his arsenal, Italian bass player Saturnino lent him his Sadowsky bass.

It wasn't a mistake suggesting this song, it would've been one I would have asked for. But around the world? The girl in the backyard performance asked for around the world. The probably would've played that anyways. I would've picked this one, soul to squeeze, especially in michigan, or maybe even knock me down. That would've been nice to see john sing that late.
