Wise to do the IMS preventively while the engine is out. Your customer/viewer is really going full hog on the engine rebuild. It will definitely be worth it on such a low mileage example as this one. Great video. Learned a lot.

so when you renew the oil pump gasket along with the water pump gasket it would be interesting to see if there has been a 1mm hole drilled in the end of the IMS TUBE to let oil inside from the pump I'm curious why there wasnt oil water mix in the shaft in my boxster when i rebuild that it had a spun bearing so it come to bits i cut a shallow grove the length or the hex key that drives the oil pump and cut across the back drilled a 1mm hole on the end shaft then grove will let oil into the shaft to lubricate the bearing that was 2 years ago no probs and i dont expect any roller bearings take 5 times the load of ball bearings i use Fag NJ204-E-XL-TVP2 and NJ2204 ECP ECP/C3 SKF i drilled an 8mm hole in the botton of the casing so a camera can go in and have a look i painted it yellow to make it obvious ... im building a M96.24 at the mo so ile prob do the same and stamp a date on it

This is fascinating and terrifying..hello Nathan from England.🇬🇧…mine is a hypochondriac ’06 Cayman S with about 54k on the clock. I listen out every time I fire it up for pistons flapping, ticking, oil smoke etc etc. but as soon as the water temp reaches 80, it sounds and drives like new. Your presentations are spot on to see what’s going to happen to my engine next😉.

My daughters 00' 986S is just under 90,000 and I'm not super concerned about this issue. We change oil often (every 3-5k) and probe the oil for metal. I think it's an over blown issue as I've heard it affects less than 5% of engines. I would also like to see how many over revs and the abuse to maintenance ratio for the failed ims engines.

Nice vid as usual, thanks. Any reason why you would not want to put a regular 5204 bearing ( non-rs, from a reputable brand) there? It seems one could get an NSK or SKF for 50 bucks or so...

In the Uk the skf bearing is only £10 - Im pretty sure the LN bearing you have to change every few years its not a life time fix- ? I just change the ims bearing for an skf every 40 k or 8 years - also do the clutch at the same time- no way would I give 1 k for a LN bearing that has cases of failure alike to the stock bearing.

@@keyo525 the rs indicates a sealed bearing (rs 1 side or 2rs, 2 sides). The replacement bearing in the vid is non rs, which apparently allows oil circulation to cool it better, seems like a good idea to me. A great source of info for bearings on youtube is Hambini, check his earlier videos (beware colorful language...:-) ).

@@keyo525 there a bit more than that now 25 ish the stock bearing has the seals on keeping fresh lube out the only time it will start to fail is when bits of a shell or bearing stats failing and contaminates it there is another way have an alley bush type bearing made to work the same as the pump end which is the end you never hear anyone talking about coz it never fails oil is pumped in that direction to lube the pump end bearing, so can do the other end via the shaft at the same time that way oil from the chain ect would only run across the face of the bearing and if a shells was failing the debris would carry on into the sump the car is 20 years old its made it this far and we could have this conversation for the next 20 years ... the germans have achieved what they have setout to do scaremonger and terrify people into spending thousands if it was new it would of been changed at warantee milage like a cam belt and the public would be none the wiser its after the warantee the problem pops up ive bought a few with the bearing completley collapsed and wane its bare metal to metal it welds its self in there and a bearing puller is no good but you can get the bearing out buy cutting it in 2 halfs with a plasma cutter and the circlip which has been ground into the grove will come out once its been grount back to a size to get rid of all the burrs

Good video. That seemed like a lot of oil in the IMS tube behind the bearing, what are your thoughts on that or am I big dealing it. After we move I will change the IMS bearing in my sons Boxster and was thinking about the IMS solution that replaces the standard bearing with a pressure fed plain bearing. Thanks for the videos you put out.

I don't mean to draw negative attention to the ceramic ball bearing update kit, but there have been a few failures reported. Could they have been missed debris that eventually found its way into the ceramic bearing? Your guess is a good as mine. While I have no expertise in bearing types, IMO buying a car with the IMS ceramic ball bearing already done is not complete slam dunk piece of mind. It's still a ball bearing. Check Rennlist and do some research. Is it superior to the factory bearing? Yes plus the facing seal is removed to allow oil lubrication however bear in mind ball bearings were not designed to be lubricated by thinner hot engine oil. I'm guessing this is why Jake/ L&N added ceramic balls instead of steel to hopefully offset this and I'm sure their testing shows they hold up yet we've seen a few ceramic update failures. IMO I'd rather pay a little less for a car that has not had an IMS ceramic update, and have the Solution installed. Or seek out a car that's had an IMS Solution already installed but they are far less out there likley because when owners were presented with the options of the two updates, they chose more so on price and maybe lack of knowlege with some misinformation from the installer. I've even had one shop tell me they don't recomend the IMS solution because they leak. After further interagtion, it wasn't even L&N's feed system they were refering to. It was a competitor and not even a bearing swap. Just the factory seal removed if the existing bearing verified good. It's added misinformation that confused owners. As I see it, the advantages of the Solution are: 1. A traditional race bearing similar to what the Mezger engine uses. 2. Its being fed filtered oil. 3. The ceramic update ball bearing has a limited lifetime service intervals. 4. The Solution is lifetime. 5. The Solution is less subject to debris via filtered oil. 6. Any debris, including normal oil contamination from the combustion process and normal wear will still find its way in between the balls and race matting surfaces. Again, I'd personally rather negotiate a better deal after an oil filter cut open analysis and then have the Solution installed and you are done with it. I am just an OCD 57 year old technical old school car guy who does all my own major and minor repairs and was a machinist in my 20's before switching careers to IT at 31 and have no afflation what so ever with either company so treat my opinion as just that.

Why is the IMS sump not communicating efficiently with the majority of the oil? I was stunned that the milkshake was isolated from the IMS! Does the IMS sump run hot and dirty because of its isolation?
@seanwalsh999
@seanwalsh999 Жыл бұрын
I am a little suspicious that the oil that came out was not milky, this tells me that, that bearing is not being fed with fresh oil, I think that is why LN engine engineering make an oil feed kit for the IMS bearing, So I don't understand how the new bearing you installed is going to get fresh oil. It seems that is why the original bearing was sealed, as the engineers new that it wasn't going to get fed in that location. My understanding is that the small amount of oil that did come out eventually rots out the seal, leading to failure, especially in cars that see little use.
@normblais7527
@normblais7527 Жыл бұрын
If you look carefully between the bearing and the keys you will see approximately 3/16 have a gap where case I’ll will feed that bearing . also if you have a larger bearing which is not removable from the outside you should remove the outer seal end it will get oil from the case

The bearing you used is only warranted for a specific time and mileage so has to be renewed periodically unlike the oil fed one which is a lifetime warranty. Also do you need to send oil for analysis for the warranty?

Might want to re-read that warranty again. Def not lifetime. It's the highest price bearing with the most exclusions of any of the bearings. Seems LN claims a lot but doesn't put a lot of faith in their product.

Hold on there. These "running costs" for fast cars never really go away. A pal said if you need a Corvette for a go-cart, a post 2008 Z06 will do the job. After every real track day it will need tires, brake pads, a full service, etc. A Lambo Hurracan Peformante with a real race driver can need all that every hour or less! The idiot shaft in our underdeveloped 911s usually isn't an issue. IF precautions are taken, like the LN kit in the video or the EPS much beefier kit. An oil service every 3000 miles is also a must. Please never forget that there's a big handful of wear items in there; water pump, air-oil separator, AC clutch and it's bearing, serpentine belt and tensioner, clutch throwout bearing and it's push lever yes weird, sway bar end links, and back tires again. Plus plugs and the 6 fragile ignition coils. And lots more. What does concern is the bore-scoring issue, tho frequent oil change should fix that. Another fun one? The "engineers" at Porsche specified 30 tons of clamping pressure on the blocks while milling cylinder bores! Of course this cracked the somewhat delicate aluminum casting on a bunch of 1998 to 2008 engines. It's called "D" chunking as the resulting fragment is D shaped. It is easy to see, IF your engine is on the bench again, and dismantled. I suppose it's like a beautiful sailing boat. If you buy a $300,000 boat, you better have the same sum tucked away for incidentals. FYI, google Santa Cruz 52 for a glorious sample. lol. Good luck.

So, the theory is still that the head wasn't torqued down sufficiently and that allowed the (sudden) intermix? Or are you going further to figure this out? It wasn't clear from your teardown that you had concluded that was the issue?

Rubbish! Bore scoring is more likely found in 987 / 997 as they had different liner treatments, IMS bearing should be considered a service item for any unknown car. All 996’s are over 17 years old - they are never going to be faultless. $30k for a rebuild! 😂 Whatever shop you’ve got that from must have glass doors and a long drive, because they saw you coming!! A rebuild is less than half that in the UK.

Ok. Hartech, probably the most expert M96/7 rebuilder in the UK based in Leeds quote on their website £11,000 ($13000)for engine removal, complete strip, new liners, all new bearings, and both heads rebuilt and reassembly back into the car and testing plus garantee. Assume 20% extra for unknown issues that’s still less than $16k - just over half what you’re saying. You are being ripped off in the US - or just quoting figures from the top of your head. I’m a 996 owner, who had the IMS changed as a precaution when I bought the car (cost £2400 with new Oil separator and seals - $2900) I’m sick and tired of ‘experts’ spreading over inflated scare stories about these cars - usually without ever owning one.
