in this video we finally solve why the Porsche 996 is mixing coolant with the oil and oil with the coolant, The final result was more than likely some other mechanic had been inside this engine and did not torque the head bolts correctly

As a trained Porsche independent in UK,i noticed you didn't show setting the engine to TDC on bank 1,and didn't support the back end of the cams,before taking cam cover of. I have seen the front cam bridges snap in half by not supporting the cams.

The valves in the middle cylinder on the second head looked a bit different than the other cylinders. A clue perhaps. Interesting engine.

Nathan, as soon as you commented about the girdle bolt's being finger tight "Somebody has been there before" sprang into my mind..... I doubt any reputable dealer or Independent tech would have left that engine in that state.... Bloody good video.... I will keep it for reference and pass it around my circle of "Flat 6 nutter's"..... Cheers

I'm going to guess cracked cylinder head. A particular weakness on the 2000 model. The crack bridges oil and coolant passage and you get intermix.

Awesome video's. Rennlist has a thread showing a bunch of cracked heads that caused intermix. In their images it was in the round bore where the spark plugs install. On the cam side of the head, not the piston side. Almost looks like you can see the crack at 24:00 in your video at the bottom of the spark plug bore, unless thats just gunk?

They are going to the machine shop tomorrow , its hard to tell with the naked eye but there was no cracks visable but cant take that chance

Thanks for this video! As you said, it's not always the engine. My MY2002 has done 203.000km now, and at some point it suddenly started putting out more smoke than usual from the exhaust, emptying its oil reserves in about 15km on the road. It was the AOS. A 100€ part that could've resulted in a catastrophic failure, had I not stopped the car and had it towed to get the thing serviced. That was over 20.000km ago, still going strong. First engine, nothing done to it. Though Tiptronic, so no over-revs. The oil cooler is also often overlooked as you said, people are so fixated on the cracks of early 996 engines, that they think this is always the case when one has the delicious caramel juice inside.

I was a mechanic at a Triumph dealership, going over to work for BMW as a bike mechanic very soon. But yeah, I've heard all kinds of just shockingly stupid stuff. One of my favorites, was a customer who heard from multiple people on various occasions that you should never, ever turn the bike off by the stop switch. That was somehow bad for the bike, so only turn it off by the key. He himself suspected it was bunk, but wanted to make sure. It literally took me a second or two to process the question before I actually answered him. I made sure he didn't misunderstand what he was being told, and confirmed that it was actually what was being said. So yeah, nothing really surprises me anymore.

Thats funny. I had a ‘90 Harley that I never used the stop switch to turn it off. I didn’t do that for any reason I just preferred to use the ignition switch. Well, one day while going 80 mph in the left lane on a sweeping four lane curve the dang bike just quit on me! No local Harley dealers would help me. I had just moved from Michigan to South Carolina and called the dealership I got it from in Michigan. He talked me through the problem. Turns out the on off switch just lost connection which I assume was from lack of use. I cycled it a few times and I was good to go. I replaced the switch anyways just in case but from then on I started using that switch at least occasionally to turn the bike off. You should have seen 150 pound me pushing that 900 plus pound Harley dresser down the highway. Darn near killed me!😬

@@jeffleach2668 Oh yeah, I bet that was lots of fun. I've had Rockets crap out on me during check rides that I had to push back. Those are a little lighter at ~800 lbs, but I'm not a big guy either. I'm also not as young as I used to be. So I have an idea what you're talking about, lol.

The "logic" behind that statement is that the switch might deteriorate over time rendering it useless for starts

Loved the video! Why or why did Porsche...a performance company bow to the bean counters? To my understanding, the left and right head are the same and engineers required to add the jack-shaft to drive timing chains at the front and rear of the engine. PS: Exhaust valves on center cylinder of one of the heads are black vs all others that are grey. Rich combustion, not water in system or it would be "steam cleaned" Measure piston to top of bore for all cylinders and look for any scoring on center cylinder of last head removed. Stuck fuel injector......YIKES!.....hope something else, but there is something wrong with the burn pattern. My Two Baht and looking forward to next video. P-Chi

Around this time was when they were about to go bankrupt and fold. They released the Cayenne a couple years later, and all those SUV sales saved the company. The rest is history.

You have to hold the cams before removing the valve cover. There is a tool.... or the cam might break.

I have a 2000 911 and purchased with heavy intermix (all coolant hoses have been re-ordered) and have pulled the engine. I performed a leak-down test and all cylinders were 5-9% at 100 psi. I then pressurized the engine on the coolant side by plugging all the hoses and applied 15psi and not getting any leak over at 15 minute period. Also pressure tested the oil cooler and the AOS. At a loss since I was expecting the leak down test to show significant leakage. Next step is tearing down to have the heads sent out?

The second head the outside valves look like they were washed by coolant. There was not a-lot of carbon on them.

As far as I know you cant Magnaflux Alloy heads only Iron ones, normally use a Dye to test for cracks, Great Videos , keep up the good work, from a 996.1 owner

hey, I have a 2001 boxster with A/T, I remember when I drive it about 15 mins, the engine up to normal operating temperature, it will make a boiling water whistling noise, some porsche owner saids that is my air oil separator, some say it was my transmission, I have changed twice of the air oil separator, finally end up I sold the car, the noise is way too loud, and also IMS bearing is another big trouble in these engine. Fun car to drive, but too much trouble.

So I happen to be in a similiar situation with intermix in the coolant reservoir and not the engine oil (at least not in the dipstick, will be draining and checking). Watched the whole video but couldn't determine exactly what felt like the cause of this intermix.. Can someone clarify for me of things to check before I pull the engine on my '99 c4?

Cyl 4 and 6 intake valves look cleaned, no? Definitely different look than 5. Not sure which look "right" I'm guessing cracked head, though could be cracked cyl5 too. Not sure if you turned it over or not to check the bores? (My bank 2 head cracked between SAI and coolant, FWIW. Cracked heads are pretty common. Fortunately I'm not fighting you parts shopping a replacement, as I need a 3.6 head.)

Doesn’t a slippery clutch contributes to the overheating problem, for I think a the engine has to provide more RPM to gain the normal speed, for example, you needed, 3,000 to make 80 mph , with the bad clutch, you may need to make 4,000 rpm , to make it go up to 80 mph , I hope you understand what I mean, for I am Spanish speaking, but , if there’s more friction on that engine, it will cause it to overheating, and if you wait too long to change the oil , I believe that it would make it worse, is that a possibility, or am I completely wrong?

Little known fact: A Cayman/Boxster and a 911 are the exact same structure from the rear edge of the doors forward. The headlights and bumpers are different, but that is just cosmetic. A Cayman/Boxster has the timing chains right behind your backbone, with the transmission sticking rearward. A 911 has the exact same engine and transmission, but turned around 180 degrees; The transmission is between the rear seats and the engine is actually in the rear bumper. A Cayman/Boxster has a hatch or trunk, while a 911 has a pair of tiny rear seats. But the structure from the rear edge of the doors is the SAME. Only the price is different. A Cayman/Boxster is $20,000 cheaper. AND it handles way better~

This well known fact was necessary to make Porsche survive, as they had no cash. The door panels are also the same. The ugly all in one 996 lights were also dictated by cost saving.

The transmission is completely different on the 911. The 911 uses a Toyota (Asin) box internals for the 6 speed and a Mercedes auto while the Cayman vs Boxter are getrag and ZF. Otherwise the Boxter and Cayman would go backwards.

Curious, what’s the reasoning to not using a gasket on valve covers? I’ve read lots of stories of leaks coming from valve covers, and wonder why Porsche went with sealer over gaskets. No mention of Taco Bell 😀
