The way the King “homosexual” will be a classic. My understanding is the actor who played Phillip is openly gay. If so, the tow homophobes were actually queer IRL. Great 4th wall easter egg.

nicholas really understood his assignment with henry, from the way he delivered his lines and the subtle facial and eye expressions and just EVERYTHING. it was so nice to see him portrayed so perfectly as an individual after reading the book and seeing him only through alex's eyes (even though that was cute as hell because alex is just so fricking in love with him it makes me sick)

Stephen Fry, who plays the king, is very famously a gay, anti-monarchy, anti-church actor, presenter and writer from the UK, so the casting is poignant and his acting choices are particularly hilarious. The way he reluctantly says “homo..SEKsual” makes me giggle every time. I also read his interpretation of the character like someone who has had “some experience” in “leaning this way” during a time that was a lot less open minded. He 1. knew Henry was gay and hinted at it before (realist etc) 2. He said he wants to “protect” Henry from the press, he isn’t denying that Henry is gay 3. In fact, he’s affirming that he considers their love to be genuine 4. I doubt a prude homophobe elderly royal would have managed to read ALL of their “occasionally vulgar” emails, and would instead have asked for a summary or something 5. He gets irritated when the brother interrupts him to minimise the relationship by calling it an “infatuation” 6. When Henry wants to go outside he doesn’t try to forbid it, he says “are you sure that’s what you want?” Like a realist, but also like a protective person who may be a bit antiquated but who still gets it, like “once you do that I won’t be able to protect you” kinda thing. I just think that this is so much nicer as a concept than the queen being forced to allow it.
@noxfior
@noxfior 5 ай бұрын
I agree on everything you said about the king - I also perceived his character in that way which i found really interesting, making this scene not only about Henry coming out, but also actively unknowingly breaking generational trauma. How many queer royals, like his grandfather supposedly, had to stay in the closed in order to "protect" the "traditional royal image"? so the read on the scene is not that the king was just another straight homophobe suffocating a queer youth, but a queer man, dealing with internalized homophobia because he was well, in his youth, was forced into the closet by his circumstances, and since he didn't get a way out, he believes that there is no way out for generations of royal offspring to come as well.

Stephen Fry is not an anti-monarchist. In fact he has been a good friend of King Charles for decades. He was also invited to and attended the Coronation in 2023. He does however make no secret of the fact that he is very much opposed to the Roman Catholic Church and can be seen putting forth his sincerely held convictions in a debate here on YT.

I also think that it makes a huge difference that the director is queer because all those visual and verbal and cinematic dick joke choices that made us go “oh my” - I highly doubt a straight director would have had the mind to include them in such a subtle fun way, it would have been either too blunt or evasive, I think. And that sensual sex scene was so beautiful, and I once again think that this makes a difference. I also think that the increased importance of the role of intimacy coordinators has managed to vastly improve the chemistry on screen between actors we’ve been allowed to watch in the past few years and I’m the opposite of mad about it. This movie is a prime example for sure

Your reaction was such a joy to watch. Thank you! A note: your love of the lake scene and their relaxed closeness is cool because I read that the director and intimacy coordinator (Robbie Taylor Hunt) agreed that he wasn't needed on set for that scene because the actors were comfortable enough with each other that they thought they could fly solo, so to speak, for that scene.

I would like to draw attention (29:41) to the fact that during the filming of the fight scene in Kensington, director Matthew Lopez stated in a behind-the-scenes interview that he was taken aback when, after taking lunch break for the scene, Taylor actually began crying when the camera started rolling again. When Nick heard this, he began crying as well, which startled and perplexed him and made him hesitate to cut most of that scene because it is so good.

I went into this movie having not read the book, and I had very low expectations for it. However, I saw people start posting reactions to it, and I decided to watch it for myself before I watched any reactions. Watching the movie as my first time experiencing the story, I really loved it. It exceeded my expectations enough that I decided to also read the book. While there are things that I wish they had included in the movie (June, Rafael Luna, more emails, etc.), I really love how the movie ended up. Also, watching Taylor and Nicholas make out for 2 hours is a definite plus 😂 The movie had everything I could want - love, comedy, queer characters with a happy ending, amazing acting, supportive parents and friends, etc etc. It is definitely one of my favorite movies now!

Just some tidbits to make it even better: the car Henry is driving is from a Bond movie, which is a nod to Arthur Fox. Your fave scene, where they’re on the float/deck? The actors did that scene on their own, w/o help from the intimacy co-ordinator. If you look close at the scene where Henry is waking up to the emails being leaked, you can see the chain for Alex’s key around his neck. Just some little fun things to make the awesome even better!

As a book AND movie fan who absolutely loves both I was dying watching your reaction because it was basically me. I lost my mind over “History, huh?” and “Baby” being in the movie and so many other things and probably was also saying “this is craaaazzyyy” in my head the whole time watching it. Nick and Taylor killed it. Matthew delivered. 10/10 no notes. I actually don’t know if a miniseries would’ve worked, as much as I’d love to see more it might have taken the air out of the whole thing. I do want to see all the deleted scenes released, though. (Prime stop gatekeeping!) And sequel, when?

From what I saw online, NOBODY expected this movie to be good in any sense. But I think pretty much everyone found it to be a little gem, myself included. As I've gotten older, I've really come to appreciate movies for what they are. I could point out the amazing aspects but this movie clearly went for a charming, fun, & sweet LGBT+ romcom and it SUCCEEDED! I haven't read the book but I heard that they danced to Your Song by Elton John. LISTEN...if they used that song, this would've been my favorite romcom EVER! That song is criminally underused and I've been obsessed with it since Moulin Rouge ❤❤❤

The discussions pro and con about the movie vs. the book has got me looking at Pride & Prejudice. First of all, because P&P is so good, fans have several adaptations to choose from - or just enjoy all for each of their strong and weak points. Text is great at descriptions, explaining things, and also giving us windows into the minds of the character. Movies are so powerful in expressing emotions, particularly when the actors are so gifted in RWRB. Every time I watch it again - and again and again - I notice new things like a raised eyebrow, a tightening of the jaw, where the eyes look. And as in this movie, the incidental music was so well fitted to the scenes, like how it swells when the two first kiss, and then again in the red room. Or the way it makes Alex really seem nervous but in a gawky way in the red room awaiting Henry.

Loved your reaction, great that we still get people posting their reaction. Just a little tidbit, the scene in Paris where Alex helps Henry out of his shirt before the love scene? That was improv. Nick had trouble with the buttons, so Taylor jumped in helping him and saying “Rigid”. Also the scene after the V& A museum where they are both in bed, Alex holding Henry’s wrist while spooning him, as to prevent Henry from leaving him again, that scene was not in the script, but they decided to do it, because it fit. Hope you’ll be doing a react for the deleted scenes too. And Yes the “for Kristy” is for Taylor’s eldest sister, she died of stage 4 colorectal cancer in June.

The scene after the V&A where Alex has hold of Henry's wrist was the best. It showed that Henry had lost the last piece of armor covering his heart and it was replaced by Alex. Alex proved he would always be there to protect Henry so no need for the armor anymore.

I loved this review so much!! I’ve watched so many since the movie came out cause the movie makes me so happy and watching other people fall in love with it as much as I did is so much fun. That said, I don’t think I seen a review with someone loving the book as much as I did going into it. So many people went in blind which is cute and fun to watch, but it was so fun watching it with you when you knew about “baby” and Ellen’s power points and all of that! It just adds so much to it seeing how much joy you got from all the Easter eggs from the book that go over people’s heads who haven’t read it! Easily my favorite rewatch. This was so cute! Now you have to go watch the deleted scenes they’ve put out!!

I'll be honest, I didn't expect much from this movie. I loved the book and was excited at the idea of an adaptation, but I wasn't familiar with the leads (I didn't realize until after watching RWRB that I actually had seen a couple of Nick's films in the past. He looks so different in each of his movies I didn't even recognize him lol). I was wrong to doubt this movie and I couldn't be happier about that! This has quickly become my favorite comfort movie. And I love seeing people who aren't into romcoms or who didn't read the book still enjoy the film. There were a lot of changes made for the movie but the director, actors, and everyone involved somehow managed to perfectly capture the spirit and energy of the book. To me, that's much more important than it matching the book perfectly.

I've been trying to learn korean for years on and off because it's my father's language and he still speaks it fluently even after so long and I only know a couple phrases by heart because of what I learned when I was younger and a few more from kpop but I don't know how to speak it fluently, understand when another is speaking korean at me, and read/write korean/understand what I'm reading/writing in korean so I've been looking into ways to do that

This is also the only time I watched the movie or tv show first and then read the book.

At 17:41, don't worry, it WAS funny! And honey, I'm almost a decade older than you and I'm not above dick jokes. Or all sorts of double meaning jokes. So don't worry about it :D. Also really love the energy you have in this video, I'm glad I'm not the only reacting with f-bombs and excitement when I'm really having fun with a movie (or a book or a series). I always felt stupid for it, but seeing you just be super giddy makes me feel much better. Also the white top looks amazing on you!
