Red, White & Royal is latest queer romcom to grace our screen. I wasn't sold by the trailer but did the movie win me over? Here's my review and commentary of the movie.

As an older gay male, I have grown very tired of the gay themed movie crap that plays the same dark issues of drug addiction, self-loathing, emotional problems of self acceptance, family not accepting gay child, and final suicide at the end. Such crap has been produced over and over again and pushed out as "entertainment" to please depressed self-loathing gays wallowing in self-pity. Red, White and Royal Blue was made as a lighthearted romantic comedy, with the key word being "comedy" with a happy ending. It is one of the very few LGBTQ themed movies that actually has a happy ending where "boy gets boy" rather than "boy kills himself". It was a bit like the hetero-Cinderella fairytale, but it is about time the gay community had a few "boy gets boy" happy fairytales to off-set the dark self-loathing suicide movies that makes the world think gay life sucks.

Although I have issues with the movie I do think it’s a fun cute movie and I do appreciate it’s not the typical gloom, doom and trauma. I’m not sure if you’ve watched the Netflix series Heartsopper (if you haven’t I’d recommend) but I’d love to see Queer movies in that cute, funny, wholesome heartwarming style. I still think Hollywood has more work to do especially with their representation of Poc queer characters.

@@TheShannonShow .... hi, yes, I watched the 2 seasons of Heartstopper. The problem with this series is the wishy-washy back and forth of the two guys on their relationship. It reminds me of the very old children's Saturday cartoon Chip & Dale ..... two chipmunks were were constantly trying to defer to the other to make a decision or take an action. Then, when the two guys finally seem to get to a stable point in their relationship, one has an eating disorder ..... i.e., unlike Red, White and Royal Blue, which has a happy "boy gets boy" ending, Hearstopper now hints at a coming dark problem to be dealt with ..... just another gay themed tv series that can't portray gay life as "happy", but always has to show it as filled with never ending problems.

Interesting perspective. I see what you mean. It does deal with negative aspects of Queer teen life but I do think it processes them in thoughtful and careful way. Teen life will always have drama but I feel like it does always end the season on a high heartwarming note and the boy gets the boy and they both have support systems. This movie was certainly more up beat but it’s not happy go lucky all the time either. There was still themes of self loathing up in there. Thank you for sharing your perspective.

The Alex in the book is definitely not acting like he's less than Henry. He's a lot more confident and isn't impressed by Henry's title from what I remembered. His mom was the Speaker of the House in Congress before she became president and his dad is a senator. He's more impressed with his parent's accomplishments than Henry being born into his title. They both talk trash about the monarchy throughout the book. Also, his childhood home is not unheard of for a working class family in the states. My family was definitely working class when I was growing up and I lived in a two story rancher close to that size. Houses didn't cost as much when Alex was growing up as they do today.

Thank you for the extra context from the book. I would have loved the seen that in the movie. House were definitely cheaper back in the day but I still feel like lines between working class and middle class have become blurred. To me Alex reads as Middle Class.

@@TheShannonShow I really wished that they turned this into a series. There was so much grounded content they left out that makes the story more well rounded. I like the movie for what it is, but it glosses over so many more serious issues that come up in the book. Alex has way more depth in the book and he's finding out that Henry does as well. That's one of the reasons he fell for Henry. Miguel was not a thing in the book either. There was another character that was Alex's mentor who betrayed him (for understandable reasons). How the leaks happened in the movie was completely different from the book. I'm not saying that Casey was perfect in her representation of POC in the book. However, I do think that she did way better than the movie allowed. You're right that middle class and working class are becoming blended. It's happening more these days due to the erosion of the middle class. It was more defined in previous generations. I'm Gen X and there was definitely more defined lines between the two. Alex is definitely middle class. Especially since he is the son of successful politicians. Even if the book, they didn't start out that way. His grandmother owned a bar that his mom used to hustle pool in. His mom was a waitress that put herself through law school. They started off very working class.

Hi! I enjoyed your review. I am a black queer woman and I liked this movie for the romcom that it is. There are some parts of your analysis that I agreed with, disagreed with, and just genuinely made me think deeper about some aspects of the movie. Personally, I do think the characters have chemistry! Is it the best I’ve ever seen, no, but I do think it’s there. I know the movie is being promoted as an enemies to lovers story, but to me it’s really not that. To me they just cleared up a misunderstanding, then became friends then lovers. In my opinion they would need a bit more anger or passion behind there relationship if it was enemies to lovers. I do agree with you on the writing. It did seem a bit awkward at times, especially with the whole white boy, privileged, working class thing. Definitely felt like a white person wrote it. I mean there was good dialogue in certain scenes, but for some reason it felt outdated or just not the way I would expect them to speak, maybe that’s just me. Now, as it is a romcom I didn’t expect them to do anything groundbreaking with issues of race and politics in the US and England, but I do think if you are going to mention it and refer to it a few times, there could have been a better way to address those topics other than short quips about white privilege. I’m not a Latin person so I wonder how Latin people and/ or immigrants think of how immigration and the way immigrants and Latinos are treated in the US were discussed in the movie. Again I’m not expecting a dissertation, but these topics need to be handled with the appropriate amount of care and consideration. Although I do like the romance in this movie, I do agree that there could have been some directing or camera work that could evoke more intimate scenes. I also think there sex scene was good but could have been more sensual. I think the scene was meant to be tender but I think there could have been more effective way of showing that, but honestly not my biggest gripe. Uma Thurman’s accent was hilarious. I’m from the south and though I haven’t been to Texas I haven’t heard an accent like that in forever. They may be out there but I don’t think majority speak like that. It would be like me trying to do an English accent but I only do the stereotypical one even though I know that English accents change depending on what part of England you’re in. I don’t think you’re analysis on their interracial relationship was wrong. However, I didn’t interpret Alex being the inferior one in the relationship because he is poc. I don’t think that Henry was seen as a prize or an elevation of status or self worth for Alex. That being said your critique is not unwarranted. Alex did have to do more of the chasing in the relationship and there are many other films where poc are coded as inferior. Again not saying you’re wrong I just didn’t get that dynamic when I watched. Like someone else commented, I would like to see a poc be romanced and more of an equal dynamic. Just not sure if that was happening here. I don’t necessarily disagree, but it was interesting to think about and of course it is just my opinion. I want to talk more about the romance and social issues. In terms of romance, I don’t think they did enough of light touches, romantic gazes, and whispering sweet nothings part maybe that’s old fashioned. I think it may have there but it wasn’t enough for me. I’ve seen actors literally say nothing with no music in the background and felt the intimacy radiating through the screen. Just my little gripe. Regarding the pacing of the film. I thought it was passable, meaning I think it could have been done better now that I’m rewatching it, but it doesn’t really bother me. I think the movie could have been 3 hours but I’m not sure if everyone has time for a 3hr romcom (I do though😂). I believe you mentioned that the 2hrs was enough for the movie to be well paced and you’re probably right, but I think it needs more time to flesh out characters and build the romance, like they barely had any dates. They met in a coffee shop once and went to that polo event. Also, it’s interesting that we didn’t see much in the way of Prince Henry’s thoughts on what he would like to do in terms of his career. We know Alex wants to be a political figure in the US and he strives to help his community and the country. But like what does Henry want to do. Would he be willing to give up his royal station and become a writer? Like what does he do for his country? I wished they would have explained more about the British government and where he could fit in or if he wants to fit in at all. Does he want to make a difference for his country? I know he thinks royal tradition is antiquated but what does he want to do about that? Again I really liked this movie. Honestly I hope there’s a sequel. Do you think this would have been better as a series?I like to watch series more than movies. Could it have been a bit better, yes. There were things in the movie where I just had to say well this is a romcom so that’s possible. I did enjoy the happy ending! It’s definitely not realistic but I’m cool with it. I don’t think the royal family would not accept a gay prince and I don’t think the US would accept any part of the president’s family in real life unfortunately. I think in romcoms there’s a line where reality can be blended to fit the story, but it can’t be too outlandish as well, that it’s just not feasible or doesn’t make sense. Like i thought it was hilarious how the votes came down to Texas and they became blue.To my knowledge they are never a blue state. They also showed on the map that Georgia was blue and that’s just totally not happening😂. Again good review, I’ll definitely check out more videos on your channel. I know this is long, but I just had so much to say, sorry! Keep up the awesome work!

Hey twin, I appreciate you taking the time to comment your thoughts on my review and I’m glad you appreciated my review. I totally agree it serves its purpose as a fun, cute romcom and I enjoyed it for what it was. I do think Alex and Henry had friendly chemistry but I’m still not sold on the organic romantic chemistry. Maybe if it had established more sensuality I would have been more convinced. You definitely have a point with the old fashioned romance techniques. I do love some good old yearning and longing. They should have got the Bridgerton team on the phone especially since it’s rated R. Yeah I feel like it was definitely more of a misunderstanding to lovers than a traditional enemies to lovers too because the tension was missing. I burst out laughing when Uma started talking. They we’re wrong for that. 😂 I feel like I got the energy that Alex felt inferior to Henry because he kept talking about his ‘working class chip’ on his shoulder which was kind of linked to his father coming to America from Mexico for a better life (intersection of race and class) when talking about himself in comparison to Henry and how he felt Henry looked down on him. For me it didn’t really make sense because they were literally in same position. That’s where to me felt there undertones of Alex feeling inferior because he’s a Poc from my perspective. I’m glad Alex got his man but I wish he didn’t have to be that much of a pick me to get him. 😂 I’m pretty sure I commented that lol but I do hope we can see some elevation and a more equal romantic dynamic with the future Hollywood interracial romance movies. I think the story worked well as a film but I also think it would have also made a good tv series which could have been remedied some of the awkward pacing, we could have had more world building and it definitely would have helped the romance building too. I think with romcom movies it’s really easy to ignore the lack of character development because ultimately you don’t really expect much from such movies but yeah we didn’t really know much about most of the characters. I think a series would’ve helped us flesh them out a bit more. They’ll probably make one one day. So many movies are coming out with TV series versions these days. The movie gave stand alone movies vibes but I wouldn’t mind a sequel. What would you like to see in the sequel? Yeah I feel like Harry post outing was pretty much ignored and he just went along with Alex which didn’t make sense considering he said he didn’t want to be up in the politics like that. If they had a sequel that would definitely need to be addressed because it’s giving resentment arc. He definitely wouldn’t have been able to join the government even if he gave up his post it would be a big no no to get in to politics as a former royal. It would be a huge conflict of interest. I reckon he would just become a professional philanthropist and become a writer because I feel like him and crown would come to mutual agreement for him to abdicate. Them winning Texas period was hilarious but especially after Alex a did whole press conference telling everyone he was bisexual and has a boyfriend who is the prince of England. That’s honestly what fictional writing is all about. Interesting. Even having a Black first family and a Female VP you don’t think Alex’s family would stand a chance in real life? Thank you for taking the time to comment and I appreciate your support.
@Bubblay
@Bubblay 10 ай бұрын
@@TheShannonShow Hey! First thanks for replying. What would I like to see from the sequel? Hmm, I am very interested in their relationship dynamic since Alex will continue to be active as a political leader. Now that they’re relationship is public I wonder what stresses will be put on their relationship and how they’ll handle it, especially how Prince Henry will handle it. I do believe Prince Henry has become braver, but I don’t know how 10 toes down he will be when the going gets tough. Also it might be silly, but if they got married I think it would be funny if they somehow ruined their own cake at their reception. I think it would be a nice tie back to the 1st movie. Although if that happened at my wedding I’d be mortified. Yes, I adore yearning and longing. A sort of desperation to be with one another. I would have loved this as a series. I think most Americans wouldn’t mind a female president since Hillary Clinton did win the popular vote against Trump. And we probably wouldn’t care about her Latino gay son, but I think there’s a certain part of white America that would have a fit and those people usually get more attention in the media and have notable influence. I remember how the racists rose up from their graves when Obama was elected and just continuously made racist remarks and protested in the street. I think the younger generations would not mind at all and may even celebrate, but young folks tend to have less influence and are not covered in the media as much. Idk maybe I’m just being pessimistic. Unrelated question have you watched Good Omens? If so are you caught up?
@TheShannonShow
@TheShannonShow 10 ай бұрын
Yeah that’s probably what I would be looking to see in possible sequel too. Alex basically got his dream scenario but I’m not sure Henry could say the same so it would be interesting to see how they navigate that. Is it really a romcom sequel if they don’t at least get engaged? I reckon they would get married and it would be cute if they gave a nod to the cake scene without it being as messy of course. 😂 Yeah I definitely see that. Whenever anything progressive happens in politics there’s always an insane pushback. They got 80 years old in power hanging on for dear life I think it’s going to be a while until things change. No I haven’t heard of Good Omens. Would you recommend?

As I was watching the movie, laughing at some scenes, getting teary eyed at others and a few times exclaiming, this is ridiculous.! I thought of how reviewers would critique the movie. Even the people who have read the book (I have not). And I must admit your review completely surprised me. The race angle was interesting. Let me start by saying, I am a person of colour. My mom is Black and my dad is Portuguese/Chinese. We were working class when I was born, by the time by third brother was born, I would say we were solid middle class. But my parents always saw themselves and told us we were working class folks. When I came out, I devoured every queer movie, short films or anything that had a queer character or representation. For the most part I felt depressed and lacking hope. The storylines messaged to me that I would likely get AIDS, bullied, killed or I would end my life. Our trauma was always in exhibit, and I internalized that message. As any human, we (queer people) are complex, multidimensional with good and bad qualities. Today I see, hear, and feel how the drums of hate towards us is being weaponised, especially towards our transgendered brothers and sisters. There are movies, short films, and TV series that tell our stories. The heavy, the real, the trauma, and I watch, and it reminds me that the fight is not over. But once in awhile, I need to laugh, to feel silly, to believe in the impossible, to not take things so seriously, to feel romantic, to dream of an impossible love, to have an ending where I am left smiling. And as ridiculous some may find this movie, I needed it. The same way, I needed “Heartstopper”. The story of a real Prince and his amazing bi-racial wife, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, has been played out in the racist British media. Did I want to see similar in this movie…? Not sure. This was not “Call me by your name”, “Beautiful Thing”, “Moonlight”, “Philadelphia” or “God’s own country”, but it never said it was. I deserve a silly romantic comedy with a heart. That touches on some serious issues but delivers on the fantasy that LOVE wins, and everything is possible. I appreciate your insight on the movie. Sorry for the long-winded comment.
@TheShannonShow
@TheShannonShow 10 ай бұрын
I appreciate your long winded comment! I completely agree that Queer people especially queer youth deserve fun, silly heartwarming movies. I wish Heartstopper would have been out when I was a teen but I love that queer tweens/teens are getting to experience this roll out. Now I definitely was not expecting an Oscar award winning movie especially with this cast😂. I think it served its purpose as a romcom well. We are getting amazingly LGBTQ+ representative right but if we keep it real POC representation LGBTQ+ still needs work. I’ve seen too many movies and tv shows where they put the POC lead in a interracial couple with a white person (which seems to be the main format where a Poc can be romantic lead in Hollywood) where the Poc is begging the white person to love them and/or is doing all the heavy lifting in the relationship and it’s romanticised. I think Queer Poc’s deserve to see themselves being romanced without having do the majority of the labour in the relationship and I hope to see Hollywood produce a romcom that does this.

@@banzaruba2995Well, if you'd read the books, you wouldn't even be asking that question. If you haven't, then I understand why you may feel this way. S2 will be all about Louis and Armand's relationship, as it should be. There are going to be flashbacks from the second book in S2 because they have to keep Sam Reid in the show, and they're teasing S3 at the same time. Lestat and Louis are endgame characters, it's the same in the books and as stated by the series showrunner. Armand is an important relationship in Louis's life, but he isn't who Louis truly wants. If you have to rank the vampires in terms of their "evil" doings, then Armand is the worst by far. Even though they're all monsters, including Louis. People ship certain characters together; I don't think anyone looks down on anybody, though. Lestat is abusive, but he was never physically abusive towards Louis in the books. And certainly nothing like what was depicted in the show. We are only getting one side of the story in the first two seasons. It's all from Louis's point of view, yet so many people take it as fact when we know it's not. Louis is an unreliable narrator. In this adaptation, it seems as though Armand is using the manipulative/mind control gift to twist Louis's memories to his advantage. For example, I think episode 5 went down completely differently for a number of reasons. But we just have to wait for S2 for more answers.

Your interpretation is skewed.......I am a White Gay man. It was two young people falling in love..... That was all it was. Sorry the ethnic mix was not to your liking. But your silly take on this did not take away from a cute story. That is all it was.... Not meant to solve all the insecurities or demands of uptight people.

LOL. I can’t say I’m surprised you feel that way white gay man. 😂 I still thought it a was cute movie but of course me mentioning the issues concerning race in this movie triggered you. Apologies for intruding your fantasy.

I’m with you , it’s like if you’re white and gay you don’t deserve to be portrayed in anything because only if you’re black or transsexual you deserve representation and happiness 😂

@@TheShannonShow Don't flatter yourself..... I am not triggered by your nonsense. I just am calling out your nonsense. The "issue" concerning Race is not an issue in the movie. Just in your head. Like I said. This was just a cute story. Not fodder for your "Martyr Syndrome".

So they literally mention race including the racial dynamic of both characters numerous times in the movie just as much as they mention sexuality in the movie but it shouldn’t be discussed or critiqued because what? You are so transparent you might as well be translucent. 😂
