Hey, just a quick note: the character representing Redacted at the end isn't meant to be Dess! It was just meant to be a stand-in that resembles Redacted's OG sprite. But one could 100% interpret Redacted as being Dess, so the resemblance could fit, I'd say. ALSO my pronouns are they/them, a ton of comments have gotten that mixed up so here y'go. Woah, I did not expect this! As a huge deltarune fan myself, I've barely heard of any theories or acknowledgement regarding "REDACTED". It's quite surprising how overlooked this mystery is and definitively needs more search put into it!

Wow. Okay after watching the video and seeing that stable part again... I just realized something... I thought it was weird [Redacted] only said * X once she appears inside it... but then I realized that you had a choice to go in the stables or not before she popped up. Once she does it becomes locked out now. I thought it was weird it would stop at that point... but then it hit me. The X key is also the button you use to cancel or exit out of something in game. When I realized that, it finally clicked. [Redacted] isn't saying X because the event isn't complete... she's using the actual X button to keep us from exploring the stables any further. She does not want us to explore her mystery any further...!

Something interesting about redacted is the fact they're found in a stable, something you usually find horses in. And what takes the form of a horse? The chess figure of the knight.

This video is so nostalgic in many ways. The speculations about Gaster were a staple of the Undertale fandom, even when it just came out. I've seen the redacted entity, although the two items you can interact with are new. What this doesn't explain is why this hypothetic other person would also speak in Windings. The consensus on W.D.Gaster's name is that it's a fusion of two font names- winding and aster. It would make sense for him to speak in one of those. But someone else? Not likely, I think. Unless all the entities in this inbetween world have merged together and speak the language of its creator. I think it's much more likely that this is just another fragment of Gaster, who was after all thrown across time and space. We don't even know for sure that the sprite we usually associate with him is what he looked like. There's also the issue of the Gaster followers. Despite their resemblance to existing monsters, who's to say they weren't other victims of the "creation" as well? Argh, there's just too many variables, and it's all still wrapped in vagueness and mystery. I'm curious what Deltarune will bring to the table in the future... Edit: Okay, I am now convinced that the Mysteryman *is* Gaster, or at least a very significant part of him, because of the Deltarune failsafe text, and THIS POEM it contains: "* Is that a cut on your face, or part of your eye?" * The gash weaves down as if you cry. * The pain itself is reason why." That seems... Pretty conclusive to me.

I hope Redacted appears in later deltarune chapters..Even if it’s just unused stuff. This character is so interesting and I want to know more about it-

What if the REDACTED room is testing Napstablook's ability to fade as the player moves closer or further from them? They're the only character who does this in-game. "water" might as well be refering to Waterfall. REDACTED is associated with a scrapped horse staple event. Who lives in Waterfall and owns a farm? Napstablook.

man, your story at the end gave me chills,,,, it was such a good concept and executed so well. though i like the idea, i just imagined it to be one of gaster's followers who couldn't make it out and got heavily corrupted, which i guess is similar! i'm gonna be honest, i've never heard the "woman with long hair over her face" interpretation before, but it makes a lot of sense. when you mentioned it, i thought the triangle sticking out of the head was a hair flick thingy. i hope to hear more of your theories in the future, it's surprising how little this room is covered ^^ i wonder how a horse stable is related, though? maybe they used to work there, or were one...?

Always wanted this character to be talked about, seen lots of people brush it off but its too convienet. All the other test rooms seem like a test room. That redacted room doesnt seem like one! Thanks for covering it omegawott!

Fun fact, when renaming files like sprites or rooms or what ever, it tends to create a bunch of errors. So it's likely that when Toby made the sprite, he intentionally named the file "sprite_redacted_a." Which I find very very interesting.

The theme of the Character Creator in Deltarune is "Another Him", what if Redacted (who based on this theory is literally Another person in His situation) is involved in it? They could be the second person who cuts off Gaster (I'm assuming you know about the Typer change for the last bit of the segment), having gone from apathetic about life to angry at someone going back. Alternatively, Redacted isn't the second person... they're it's victim. After all, "Redacted" can be defined as something or someone being discarded.

Absolutely preposterous. I love it! I feel like there's something of note though, with the key being "nearly invisible to the naked eye". considering the nature of the shadow crystals.

Very nice video! I've always been fascinated by this weird blob on some ominous dark room that people seem to gloss over for no reason, maybe because it doesn't have a cute face to draw or whatever. I personally just believe that REDACTED is Gaster himself, vanished onto the very depths of the game's code, and that Mysteryman's room is a Red Herring to the Gaster mystery. I have a couple of reasons to believe so: -Mysteryman disappears when interacted to never be seen again, a similar behavior to the Gaster Followers (he even makes a very similar noise to one of them). -Mysteryman's room can be found with random chance/luck just by playing the game based on a value that randomizes itself at the beginning of a new playthrough, unlike REDACTED, who you need to hack your way into and is probably the ultimate secret of the game. (Hell, perhaps a bit of a reach, but with the "X" thing at the horse stable, it almost seems as if he's the X that marks the spot, or that he's disallowing you from going any further as you've already reached the end.) -The definitive reason, REDACTED makes the exact same talking noise as the one heard on Entry 17, it's just that his text is calmer. And hey, we know Toby, the ways he foreshadowed Deltarune on Undertale were almost completely glossed over by the entire fanbase until they were finally revealed. Y'never know!

My mind is blown. I've been into Undertale practically since it released and I've never heard of the horse stable secret. Also even if this theory isn't true, your story at the end tying it all together was chilling and is just such a cool idea. Great video :)

Your theory could easily fit with the secret dialogue found in deltarune's code! The one where there is (i think) someone... lost in an eternal darkness?

Or it could just be Gaster? Feel like that’s a lot easier solution for someone who literally speaks Wingdings and is shattered across spacetime. Also, people still remember Dess, and DONT go on without her.

Since this was behind dogcheck I never wanted to consider it being important. But it may have been genuinely unused "unused" content in the game (as opposed to Fun events and Entry 17 being used "unused" content). I didn't know about the name of the room and how water now seems to keep coming up in Deltarune or with the river person's mention of the song coming from the sea.

I've personally always been on the side that redacted is just a fragment of faster, given they did literally get torn apart, and that fragment is likely the key to repairing faster or something along those lines, but I quite like the poetic nature of this interpretation as well!

The opening goes so hard. Acknowledging that people say you look like Spamton. Saying you actually made it before him and denying the connection. Then playing into it anyways. It's amazing. (00:28)

This is actually a crazy good theory, and it lines up with the goner code in deltarune, the code that is someone calling out to the darkness. "help. can anyone hear me?" that code. the one calling out like that could very well be this [redacted] entity.

This very well could be toby testing wingdings/sprite fading/something changing after an action is taken, but it is very interesting that toby used the same redacted sprite with that. It could also very well have meaning as this video explains.

i have a more reasonable gastor theory he’s just a test model for future characters and i think that character was roulx but toby saw the fan base kinda established their own idea of gastor being it’s own character so toby kinda added on to the mystery and based on some concept art and stuff i think that’s the case

I always thought it was just agreed that this was another reanimate of gaster, seeing as they split into pieces.

I have a personal theory concerning this: the core gained energy from dark worlds

One time scrolling through tumblr I read a post that said that the redacted sprite looked like Dess standing on front of a door, and now I can't unsee it. I would also like to point out that Noelle's dark world attire is incredibly simple compared to the rest of the gang, and it might be because Toby already had a very clear version on how he wanted Noelle's dress to be, with the whole wide sleeves and everything. Redacted also seems to have very wide sleeves poking out of the hair thingy As for me, I have three theories on who redacted might be: Noelle, who lost one of her horns, had the other one eroded, and grew out her hair after being stuck in the void in her dark world attire. Maybe it's a distorted reflection on future deltarune events regarding Noelle and a door Dess, lost in the void A fragment of Gaster As for the last theory, I can provide some more "evidence": Gaster was shattered across time and space, right? Wouldn't it be contradictory for his lore to be able to be wholly physically present in Undertale? What's the occasion? I think the mysteryman sprite we all know and love is actually the "space" fragment of gaster. Think of it, mans gets not one but TWO exclusive rooms in regard to his event, and even though the black areas of the room are still walkable, the place seems a lot more physical and concrete than other events like redacted's black void Not only that, but if you interact with him he changes forms and dissappears, back into being everywhere and nowhere, showing that his form remains concrete across that specific place no matter where in the room you are And then you have redacted, a figure that, although you cannot go through it, it changes opacity depending on how close you are. Kind of like how sound becomes more feeble when you're farther away. Not only that, but even if you interact with it, the figure doesnt change, and instead gives you DIALOGUE. something that you can only hear Those things might have been a bit of a stretch, but for my final evidence I'd like to say that redacted's room takes you to the SOUND TEST ROOM. A PLACE FOR SOUNDS. the link between redacted and noise, especially Gaster's theme, is incredibly strong So yea. my three guesses

Am very late on this video, really enjoyed the theory. My main issue with it, however, is that in Deltarune at least people remember Less. Rudy Holiday and Noelle both reference her in game, and the Spamton Sweepstakes implies Noelle's been looking for her online. Theres evidence the Holidays existed within Undertale as well, however, as the Undertale Christmas Clock App had Asgore's dialogue talk about Rudy Holiday and his two daughters, but Ashore only specifically references Rudy's "youngest daughter" and says nothing about the elder? Maybe there will be some sort of connection between Undertale Dess and Deltarune Dess...? Either way ,excited for chapters 3-5!

Oh shoot, I just remembered, in the room with the crossword puzzle in Snowdin, Sans mentions Papyrus had been trying to solve the horoscope, it's played like something haha silly, but also, the lowercase of Windings has the horoscope symbols! it could be a reference to Redacted as well. so I really do wonder if this room was not just a test room.

redacted could have actually been a repurposed test room, with the room initially being meant to test the "fading" effect that... whatever that thing is displays (and possibly also entering the sound test room). of course, i highly doubt being able to interact with the thing would in any way be relevant to testing the fade effect, which is why i think it could be "repurposed"

The inaccessible room with the ficus guy leading to the disappearing memory head room kept bugging me too. Looks like ficus guy is standin for the mushroom guy, but the fact a follower leads you to an amalgamate we still don’t know much about is pretty weird paired with his dialogue.

Who knows, maybe [REDACTED] is the reason The Core was built? Maybe gaster once saw the entity and built the machine to find the otherworldly creature, cause the core seems WAY overkill if it's 'only' purpose was to power the underground. Or maybe when the core was built, gaster saw them in the void below the core and either fell or jumped inside to see what power the void could give him or some shit

I have a better explanation, the one that doesn't involve another unknown character. What if when Gaster was erased from reality, the game literally deleted them and replaced with that default auto-bug-fixer sprite (like purple-black chess pattern in Minecraft or something like that). Meanwhile every event that was connected to it was moved away so the game was able to work properly. Like it is quite obvious that horse stables are supposed to be entered northway, and would you know, the exit from reducted room is south. You can even recreate how they were fit in the game before being erased, although that is mostly speculation. There is also another secret room in waterfalls, the one with a tall grass and unknown guy with a creepy smile, just like Gaster. Maybe that is how you supposed to meet each other, after which they would tell you to go and visit their "home", so you go to that Gaster secret pathway, but instead of a door you would see stables and a trash can, after which you enter and probably get a side quest involving powering up that machine from Sans basement with the artifact (like srsly, why would Toby even add it if player isn't suppose to use it in the first place) which does who knows what, but clearly something awesome like giving you magic. Although, getting it wouldn't be easy, as you would probably need to sacrifice some exp and hp, cause I can't explain their battle stats otherwise. Add some sad backstory on how they got from royal scientist to THAT sprinkled with some true lab foreshadowing.

not gonna lie for the past like 7 months i've had this insane theory that in deltarune, dess is in a very similar situation to gaster, and all of the creepy gaster-esque goings-on in deltarune have been like. half-gaster, half-her. there's a lot of evidence to support the theory and this video is sort of enabling me

the horse stable sprite was almost certainly done by Andrew Hussie, the creator of homestuck, who toby stayed with while making part of undertale. Hussie has a well documented love of horses.

Here’s my theory, too get the true ending of deltarune (probably not gonna be true though) you have to get all the secret bosses fight items, weird route all the characters, (if that’s what’s gonna happen) and choose all the creepy options, because then you know who is controlling it all and quoted by spamton “BREAK YOUR [[silly strings]]”

It's not related to the video, but I really want to talk about another mistery, that have been seemingly forgoten. In Undertale, on a true pacifist route, after Frisk is done with a true lab, they step in the elevator, then they get a phone call. They never heard that voice. The text sounds familiar to me, yet I have no idea who it belongs to. The person is asking the player ( not Frisk ) if they are there, they saying it was a long time. Then they thank the player, "everything has fallen into place" "(player's name)" "See you soon." And then the elevator is falling and Frisk is ending up in the Asgore's home. I, to this day, have no idea what this was about and there is no videos on this topic. I beg, could some of you bring more attention to that? I really want people to talk about it, I feel it could be a huge thing for Deltarune as well.

Honestly the best interpretation I saw of this design was on the Undertale subreddit. It decipted this thing as a pale, bright, mass of tentacles shaping a crying face out of a black coat. The concept was just so weird but at the same time it made so much sense, it was terrifying.

The key of the trashcan is stated to be barely visible to the naked eye, just like the Shadow Crystals that are invisible, with only their Shadow visible.

I really like this theory man you did a good job. But I’ve also got a theory of my own. Perhaps [REDACTED] is also Gaster. When the followers say what happened when he fell into his creation they say he ‘shattered’ across time and space. Shattered into multiple pieces. Mystery man, [REDACTED] and the piece the follower holds. There could still be more pieces of him out there. Again great video man! Keep up the great work!

I mean there is a theory that gaster is the knight bc redacted is tough to be gaster and redacted is în a "horse stable", and a knight is represented by a horse in chess. And this theory of yours gives the impresiona that des is the knight. Possible, yes... However, seeing this makes me think something else. A knight is represented by a horse, but a knight is actually usually riding a horse. So what if gaster is the knight and des is the horse. In the ideea that the horse(dess) is what is helping gaster to be able to travel and connect to the deltarune universe, since în chess, the knight can go in an L shape move that goes both on the X and Y axium at the same time în one move(wich no other chess piece can do), representing that it can tehnically move to any place în the Town of deltarune, but also that is short distance travel wich represents why he și fixate on only the town (might be a bit too much extension but worth saying it), or/and move from the undertale plane of existance to the deltarune plane of existente(or the light world and dark world, or all 3)and viceversa. And also, the knight in chess passed trough any pieces in chess without interacting with it except the the pieces that he stops on (similar to how the deltarune knight could move across the Town without interacting or being seen by any of the people în the town) but it interacteed with the king and queen (by helping em instead of taking them down, oposite to chess logic, unless we count the fact that în chapter one it caotures the other 3 kings) bc is where his L shaped move stops, and on that same spot he makes the fountain . And if the horse is what helped the knight to do that it means that all this is done by using Des (somehow idk how). Huge speculație but worth considering it.

Idk if someone already said this, but I don't think Dess fell into the core, because she wasn't erased from people's memories. Her dad and Noelle both mention her. So. Not saying [redacted] couldn't be Dess, only that her situation couldn't be like Gaster's.
