Whew! Well I'm moved and it's time to make a knife! I have the temp shop set up to the point that I can work in there; so naturally I wanted to get back to the basics with this 1084 full tang knife. Hope yall enjoy the build!

On the strength of my experience with your primary channel, I subscribed to this one. The intro video did not disappoint. Indeed, like nearly all your other videos, it was a delight. I hold dual degrees in Electronics and Electrical Engineering Technology (pretty much everything from 0.7 volts dc to 480 vac). In retirement, I have maintained my credentials with a small service bureau that does design and prototyping. Many of my personal projects (for the fun of it) have been microcontroller integration projects. All that said, I look forward to whatever you manage to get out there!

Besides a rotary rubber belt platen that gets rid of the " belt seem bump " there is always a Soft flat platen made from a scotchbrite belt section glued on to a normal metal platen plate then a piece of thickish leather glued on to the scotchbrite..making a soft flat platen that soaks up the belt bump..

The resperator with the full face mask is really ideal because you have protection from sparks and flying metal as well as the breathing protection. I would be curious if it fogs up much especially if you are working in a cold garage.
@RedBeardOps
@RedBeardOps 2 жыл бұрын
Dude not at all! It's amazing... It doesn't fog since the air is passing over your face and onto the inside of the shield. It will start to fog if you turn off the power pack

Awesome man! I have that exact versaflo fresh air system... the battery goes dead pretty quick, which you think it wouldn't because of the size of it. Weird that they make you use the Allen screw to take the battery off but other than the battery issue it's really nice when it's hot you get nice cool air in your face.

Mate, I hope you don't have neighbours that blab about that interesting work shop when you open those garage doors. You Sir have a unique mind...I've been told the same. You've built or had help now doubt at a cost to make all you magnificent Tooling idea's come to life. I often have to weld deposits at 4 thou pitches. Yep. The thickness of the human hair. I want that respiratory system you have. I'll be making some of the items you've displayed and unlike some..I'll be saying who designed the one I've made from what I've seen. How many knives does one need? Unless your doing for others or with another or 5. My passion is in carving upon scales. Carving upon or into bone. But you sir are a true inspiration with clear and succinct advice to do one's own build. I'm subbing to you asap. Keep up those tired sharpening hand skills !!! Truelove awesome. Good to see back up and running. Can I ask you where you located the magnet attachment, and do you have a video of it?

Pull out 2 standard breakers and replace with a quad. So if you have 2 adjacent 15a standard breakers pull those out and replace with a 20-15-15-20 quad. Some new panels will not accept quads, so make sure yours will before you buy one. If it does and you go with a quad, then you could use #10 or #12 soow cord with the receptacle that comports with the plug on your oven. This is only for temporary use, and shouldn't be your permanent solution. Anyhow, just an idea since your subpanel is right there above your work bench.

Thanks for the thoughts man. I was going to see about getting another panel installed... Not having any space is a no go!

Getting back into grinding after a long break is tough, man. I always end up making some stupid mistake that totally changes the way my knife was originally going to look. Hand sanding is my least favorite part, not much skill but a whole lot of repetitive effort. I made a little machine to do hand sanding for me after getting the idea off another YT channel, I found a single cylinder air compressor at a junkyard and used the crank and cylinder to fab up my "stabby machine" with a little RC electric motor to drive it. It turns at about 80rpm, so I get a little over one stroke per second. I made a simple clamp for the tang and a guide for the knife so all I have to do is hold sandpaper against it. Not my favorite tool, it's rough and janky looking, but when it comes to hand sanding it gets the job done without wearing me out and also makes the scratch pattern more parallel than I could do by hand. They're super easy and cheap to make, all it does is convert rotational to linear motion so you can set it up however you want. If I were to do it again, I'd forgo the compressor and go straight to an aluminum plate for my crank, so I could drill a bunch of various holes out from the center for the connecting rod to match stroke length to whatever blade length I want. Then instead of a clamp, I'd use a magnetic base like your surface grinder so I could hand sand from tip to tang if I so chose to.

Very cool! I've seen that channel and the contraption. It's intriguing for sure.

As a Brother RED BEARD I truly enjoy your out loud thought process. I do have a question for you about your makers mark. What are the dimensions and do you have different sizes for different size blades??? Keep up the GREAT WORK and stay safe!!!

Thanks Kester! Mine is around 0.5'' in length. I do have a bigger one but rarely use it.
