When this came out in the 70s, everyone thought this was a Black R&B group. We didn't get to actually see the people in the Bands like you can these days. When we did see them on "The Midnight Special," we got a big surprise when we all saw they were Native American. They had soul, that's for sure. Great old song from the 70s.

If I remember the story behing the lyrics, it was Lollie's lady just hanging out with him at home, and asks him if her hair looks funny, you know the way they do when they're insecure about it? Then he responds, basically saying "what are you, nuts, you're gorgeous!" with "you're divine, and you're mine, come and get your love!" and so the hit was born...

Redbone is one of the groups/artists in the documentary Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked The World. It shows how American blues and rock were deeply influenced by Native American music, and there have been so many American musicians that have been Native American or part NA that we don't even realize. Great, great movie.

Yes Redbone was Native American, & the Dance is called the "Fancy Dance", Pan-Indian dancing, Fancy Feather or Fancy War Dance is a style of dance some believe was originally created by members of the Ponca tribe in the 1920s and 1930s, in an attempt to preserve their culture and religion. It is loosely based on the War dance. Please react to more, they have many hits out there!!!

A well loved hit by Redbone, hit #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. With a little scat at the end. Cab Calloway and Scatman Crothers come to mind when scat is involved Scat singing Vocal improvisation with wordless vocables, nonsense syllables or without words at all Originating in vocal jazz, scat singing or scatting is vocal improvisation with wordless vocables, nonsense syllables or without words at all. In scat singing, the singer improvises melodies and rhythms using the voice solely as an instrument rather than a speaking medium

But there's some Cherokee in the mix too & when I used to see this band (& any other Native American artists) I'd swear I feel that part of my DNA stirring. There's another "Roots Rock" band called the BoDeans that I really like, from the early 90"s. I'd love to see you react to their song "Red, White & Blood Red" (Official Video). The lead singer in this was Lolly Vegas & his co-founder brother is Pat. The movie wasn't from 1970s. The first "Guardians of the Galaxy" came out in 2014. The main character "Peter Quill" who called himself "Star Lord" had a mixed tape that his deceased movie mom made for him & this song was the first one he was listening to in the movie. Lolly died in 2010, but his brother is still performing (I think)! This was their first hit but they did more songs too.😊

I am sure someone must have said this but just in case... Guardians of the Galaxy starring Chris Pratt is part of the Marvel Universe. His character loves all music of the 70's because his mother loved it. When she was dying she gave him a mix tape and he often dances to the songs. This is one of the prominent ones. Great soundtrack to a fun movie.

I’m 53 years old I was four years old when this song came out and I obviously been listen to the song ever since and I freaking love this song I had no damn idea they were Native American. I mean obviously the name of the band is inferred but I just thought that’s what they call the van. I had no clue my husband just informed me of this. He obviously know his mom God rest, her soul was Native American.
