Originally from Fresno, California, brothers Lolly Vegas and Patrick Vegas moved to Los Angeles in 1969 to form the group Redbone, a Native American rock group that reached the Top 5 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1974 with "Come and Get Your Love". Redbone played primarily rock music with R&B, Cajun, Jazz, tribal, and Latin roots. In 2006, Christina Martinez, with Raza Hookupz and Badist Oldies, had the honor of meeting and interviewing Lolly Vegas at his home in Los Angeles. Present at the meeting was Iron Joe, also a member of Redbone. This was a happier time as witnessed by the arrival of family towards the end of the interview. We lost Lolly Vegas in 2010, may he rest in peace.

He really was. This band should have gone so much farther. Their music, look and style was unique, just like the 70-early 80's was. I miss seeing them perform, and hearing them on the radio. RIP Lolly

If the Vegas family sees this message, I want you to know that Come and Get Your Love was my favorite song in 1974. That song just hit me! Hands-down nothing was close. He created a masterpiece and I so appreciated it. You all should be so proud of his accomplishment where he had a # 5 song in 1974 with a ton of airplay in Boston and around the USA. I will never forget it. As a matter of fact, I was going to exercise today and the song came on the radio so I waited till the song was over before I shut the car off. Just like back in 1974. Rest In Peace and thank you Lolly Vegas!

I have been doing a lot of research, and watching every video and reading every interview and watching every interview from people who knew Lolly, who were members of the band, family members, and anyone who happened to come in contact with him. I have not heard one person who has ever said anything negative about Lolly Vegas. Everyone who ever met him, came in contact with him, or knew him, loved him and talked about what a wonderful and sweet and loyal person that he was. In spite of all his Fame and popularity, Lolly was married to the same woman for 46 years! That should tell you something about this man. He also attended Dr Reverend Della Reese's Church in Los Angeles, and was a member as he put it "of her flock". He spent his last few years on this Earth helping people whenever and wherever he could.

You watch their performance on Midnight Special, when Lolly was this magnificently fine young man, and then this -- it blows your mind to think how time and disability seem to have altered him so completely, but then towards the end when he is standing up with Joe, he flashes that big smile and you see he is the same person inside. Don't waste time, young 'uns. Even the greatest possible talent and beauty are not yours forever. Though I agree the interview is poorly done, the part where his nieces and nephews flood in at the end is priceless. You can tell how much they love him and that is pretty cool.

In 1974, I was the Video Tape Engineer at the (then) WKID-TV-51 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. when one day, these guys just showed up in the studio and they were there to do a lip-sync to this (their hit song at the time) and no one was there to run cameras. I put on a video tape, set it to record and let it roll... then went out into the large Studio B to operate a camera, where these guys were dressed (as shown) and they proceeded to lip-sync to the song for a video for later airing. They were truly very funny and a joy to work with. They lip-synced but actually verbalized OTHER words to it, and it was hilariously funny. We had to do a few takes to get it right. I even have some photos I took that day but they are on slides. I clearly remember the feathers they then had hanging from the neck of their guitars. If you were in your 20's then... you would remember this group for sure...

Redbone was essential to a most wonderful time in American music- we had top 40 hits in any language or cultural influence- we even had gospel hits with the Staple Singers and the Edwin Hawkins Singers. Eres Tu was a hit in America sang entirely in Spanish. When I heard Redbone's "Chant the 13th Hour" I was enthralled- their debut album was among the greatest ever written and recorded.

I love Christina's interview with Lolly; she is guileless and it makes it so much the better; it's nice to see Lolly so at ease and so kind, and it gives him a chance to talk about his career and the memories of the strip, etc. and plus we get to see him tease her over asking if the portrait of the chief is a relative of his oxoxoxo we get to see Acela come in w/ Pat's kids when they were younger; it's adorable to me. Love Lolly's smile!

her news group sent her out for the interview without making sure that she was armed with a little bit of information that would have been so helpful in making this go smoothly and allowing us to hear a little more about Lolly's life and his present living situation! Yes, let's certainly be thankful for the crumbs when there was a whole bakery that went to waste!
