“Come and Get Your Love,” the addictive ‘feel good' invigorator from 1974, made REDBONE the first band compromised of Indigenous Americans to bust the Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100:
REDBONE was an interesting mix of Mexican American, and Indigenous American heritage- which was proudly represented in their unique music, AND prominently displayed in their live concert performances, where band members wore colorful Native attire- such as moccasins, buckskin, and beaded headbands on stage:
The band was formed ’68 by the the Vasquez brothers, Pat & Lolly, who changed their surname to “Vegas” at the prompting of legendary artist manager Bumps Blackwell.
Pat & Lolly were in expert hands with Blackwell. He was the man recognized for navigating the careers of Little Richard & Sam Cooke, and discovering the untapped greatness of a future virtuoso named Quincy Jones. It all started in the suburbs of Fresno, California, where the Vasquez brothers ‘cut their teeth’ as a teenage singing duo- performing R&B & pop covers at clubs in the area.
Pat, the younger of the Vasquez boys, won Coca Cola’s 1st national singing competition in '58 at age 17. Part of the grand prize by winning the contest was receiving a recording contract, but he put that on hold to remain side-by-side with his big brother.
The following year in ‘59, Pat & Lolly took their act to Los Angeles, and became a fixture on the famed Sunset Strip, and officially changed their last name to” Vegas”.
The duo performed consistently at local clubs on Hollywood Boulevard, and Sunset Boulevard while writing and playing on records by luminaries like Tina Tuner, James Brown, Sonny & Cher, Little Richard, and Elvis: Perhaps, the most eventful shows on the Sunset Strip that the brothers performed back in those early days, was when they were the opening act for the provocative stand-up comedian Lenny Bruce.
Pat & Lolly opened for Bruce for two weeks, and during several of those engagements, Bruce was arrested in the middle of his routine for using excessive profanity on stage, and taken to jail in handcuffs. The brothers were both great singers, and proficient at several instruments. Pat was a superb bassist, and Lolly dazzled his peers with his prowess as a guitarist.
It seemed logical that they should further their talents & wide-ranging musical interests, and create a totally new act with a fresh, distinctive sound. Pat revealed that it was an exciting, emerging artist, by the name of Jimi Hendrix, who was part Cherokee, that inspired the brothers to do something that had never been done before…. Assemble an all Native American rock band.

As a 13 year old kid, living on the Osage Reservation we would sometimes go to Tulsa for a day of roller skating and every Indian kid there would really light up when this song came on. We all knew they were like us and it made us all proud.

@@ProfessorofRock Sadly, Tony passed away on Christmas day in Las Vegas, 2009. I spent a lot of time at his house as a teenager..playing guitar in his living room.. He would come to our house for dinner, then we'd get out the guitars.. Best music lesson Tony taught me.. "To be a good guitar player, learn what NOT to play"... a Sentiment gleaned from Miles Davis.. Both were right! Love your channel, thank you for keeping the music alive!

Had a super crush on a boy in high school. I got tickets to see Redbone in concert circa 1970. He said yes, at first; then declined the day before the concert. I told him that was fine and that I would fine someone else to go. When my friend and I were at the concert, having a wonderful time dancing to the music, I was twirling around and saw that the boy i had a crush on was 10 rows behind us with his friend. He saw me, i saw him, and I twirled around and finished my glorious life without him; and it has been epic! Thanks for the memories!

My little brother Scott Perdue RIP loved Redbone. Scott was downs syndrome and he had a million songs in his head. I took him to karaoke every friday night for 12 years. He loved it, and everyone loved him. It was his social event . When he got sick with alzheimers he would get anxious . I would sing this song, and it would calm him. He didn't even know who he was, but he somehow had a memory of Redbone. He's been gone 6 years and come and get your love takes me back to the great times we had .

This is easily one of the best songs of the entire 1970s. I was 8 when it was released. My brother was 11. The upbeat bass line at the beginning instantly hooks you, as it thumps an infectious pattern. Next, the twangy, exotic sitar plays that cool theme riff that hooks you even deeper, and there’s no looking back. You’re going to feel better no matter what. The drums accentuate the song’s cheerful character and cut crisply through the rising and falling bass tones. The resonant lyrics blend in seamlessly and when they sing the call backs, you’re already singing along. Tasty, bright, sliding guitar licks transition between parts, adding a nice tonal variety. My brother danced and sang along when it played on the radio, and when it was over, he was pumped with energy and enthusiasm that required more dancing and singing, as he pranced about the house, filled with childish exuberance. He especially loved the “la-la-la-la-la” parts; they had a sort of teasing quality. The song is just a masterpiece of beat, rhythm, tone, and vocal and keyboard melodies, chugging forward into a place where problems are forgotten. The tune is a sonic elixir that cures the blues, releases depression and raises the spirits. One of the best from the ‘70s.

I'll never forget seeing Redbone perform live at Disneyland, Anaheim, CA. As a young teenager with Yaqui roots, it was the first time I'd seen so many young/old Native Americans at the amusement park! When the stage came up from underground (yes, an underground stage) the excitement and electricity in the venue was contagious! I was next to the stage, standing room only, pressed in tight and ready to be a part of Redbone history. I practically wore out all of my Redbone albums listening to them! A native American myself, I was in 9th grade when this song hit and I loved it the first time I heard it and I still do today! The commercial just brought back great memories for me and this song will always be one of my favorites. One evening, at the height of the pandemic, I accidentally clicked the official audio of Come And Get Your Love. At the time I was feeling so down how can I cope. That song got me sobbing. It was a release of bad feelings of that pandemic. Come And Get Your Love gave me hope. Pat, Lolly, THANK YOU! Especially Lolly even if he was 10 years no longer with us, his song gave me a reason to go on.

Casey Kasem was very impressive in his Billboard "American Top 40" work and his Voiceovers for various "Groovy" Hanna Barbera Cartoons. (Yes, I said "Groovy!" as in "The Groovy Ghoulies."😎👻👻) Ryan Seacrest carries on that tradition well picking up where both Casey Kasem and Dick Clark (and for that matter Guy Lombardo) left off. This song "Come And Get Your Love" is somehow linked in my mind with Blue Swede's "Hooked On A Feeling". Love both songs from my high school days since both are so catchy and fun and bring back good memories. Another one that is a fun memory is King Harvest's "Dancing In The Moonlight" which can use "more cowbell", just like "Don't Fear The Reaper". Can't help the SNL memory!

As a foster parent that has a lot of Native Alaskan kids come through my place. I try to expose them to people they may be able to connect with, that figured out a path to success. My dad passed away a year before Guardian was released, he was a massive comic nerd and music geek, and the minute this song started playing, I was bawling thinking this would've been his favorite Marvel film, kicking off with one of his favorite songs. This song is one of my absolute FAVORITE songs of the 1970s! It always makes my retro playlist. It's one of a handful of songs that can instantly transport me back to a particular time and place... listening to AM radio while hanging with friends, swimming at the neighborhood pool, so many memories!!! The song was released in late 1973, but I’m old enough to remember seeing them live on Midnight Special in 1974. Before they started playing, the rhythm guitarist did an Indian Pow-Wow ghost dance, in full regalia, when he was done he picked up his guitar and they started playing the song. You gotta see it, it’s on you tube, Redbone 1974 Midnight Special. Redbone was a Mexican-American/ Native American rock band started in the 70s. 👍 ( Redbone is a Cajun term for a mixed race person)

@@jismism9515 yeah it came on at 12 midnight at my place. That dance is a standard Indian ghost dance that is done at many Pow-Wows, so it’s possible to have seen it done at a lot of places. I’m sure the wrestler was just showing his pride and not just a publicity thing. 👏 It was way more fun being 20 in the 70s than being 70 in the 20s. 🤣

My uncle was an engineer for a radio station on the East Coast and he used to send us a bunch of albums. We got several from Redbone and I really liked their sound. As a young budding bassist, Pat Vegas was one of my earliest influences. The intro to their song One More Time is really influenced by their musical ancestry. If you like this classic, you’ll love their others!

My memory of this song always focuses around a late 1973 road trip from Sylmar to Oxnard (Southern California) to see a pretty little blonde while on leave from the Air Force. Before 1973 ended, we went our separate ways, but almost 50 years later, we STILL talk and reminisce of that glorious year, when innocence still ruled our futures. Come and get your love.

First heard this song as a kid when one of my older brothers brought home the 45...it was played heavily in my home. Because of family situations, this song has always been very special to me. 48 years later 2022. playing music for my students...to my surprise, a room full of 11 and 12-year-olds singing in unison..... 'Hail (Hail), what's the matter with your head, yeah" Pretty cool moment for me. (Students actually sang Hey! Hey!" )

The Southern hard rock band Blackfoot, while undergoing many lineup changes over the years, contained members who were of Native American descent during their "classic" late seventies and early eighties period. I've loved Redbone and Blackfoot since I was a kid and both are terrific bands whose music and heritage should be kept alive.

Some songs just take you immediately back to a time and place, and "Come and Get Your Love" is definitely one for me. This particular memory for me was while I was traveling to from Montgomery, AL to Portage IN with a co-worker of my Dads' and we were on I-65, passing through Birmingham, AL. I used to enjoy looking at the buildings in downtown and this particular time that song came on the radio. It was an enjoyable trip for me, and every time I hear Redbone's classic, I think of that lil' Datsun pickup, the end of summer and heading to a new town I'd never even heard of, much less visited. Turns out I really enjoyed living in Portage in 1977.

Dude, love your video as I always do. But this time when you mentioned that commercial that featured redbones come and get your love together with the story of your dad, Well, it made me quite emotional and I even shed a tear. Your old man surely sounds like he was a great guy. I guess it all got to me because I have been sharing my love of the classics with my kids since they were born. I’m currently 62 and all my kids know the titles and artists of music that way, way before their time. Love what you do and the passion in which you present your content. Keep the classics alive. There's a brilliant documentary called 'Rumble' that celebrates the influence of native Americans in music going all the way back to 1930s bluesman Charley Patton. I'm Australian, we have a TV channel NITV (National Indigenous TV) that plays a lot of various indigenous content from all around the world. That was when I first properly learnt about Redbone. Great video Prof!

Brought a tear to my eye also got me choked up. My dad has been gone for 10 years now. But he indirectly introduced me to music. What we had in common in music was the Beatles! I play the guitar and he bought me my first guitar when I was 13 hard to play that guitar, but stuck with it. Then at 17, he bought me a Gibson Les Paul Custom for my high school graduation! Still have that guitar! Thanks Professor for that sweet memory.

I was wearing that album out in Toronto then took it to White Rock BC with me when I escaped in '75. 2013 I walked into a wine bar in a medieval building downtown Alcester Warks UK and it was playing. Threw my hands up with the manager in joyful recognition ... everyone I was with had no clue.

Oh goodness, where to start. Loved the music from this band in all it's permutations, but this song....... musical crack. So addicting. Such a good high. I love your show. Back in the 60s and 70s, I listened to music on the radio and didn't always catch the name of the song or the band, but by holy, I could sing all the words. It blows my husband mind. I'll say, "Who is singing this?" and then proceed to sing the whole thing start to finish. He said the funniest one was me singing my head off to ACDC. Now, you would have to see me and know me to realize what a sense of cognitive dissonance hung in the air as I pumped out Highway to Hell with equal enthusiasm to Come and Get Your Love.

One of the very first songs that really grabbed my attention when I was a kid. When I was in 5th grade I discovered Rock music and my sister and I started buying 45 RPM records. This is one of the first 10 records we ever bought. Wish I still had it. A classic!

When I was a young guy, I covered this song, and the Raspberries Go All The Way, with my very short-lived garage band. Always been one of my absolute favorites. When I took my kids to see Guardians of the Galaxy and this song came on, I started to sing it but my kids, who knew my history, quietly asked me not to, not because I can't sing but because we were in a theater. 🤣🤣 Really good memories with this song.

I too am under a singing ban...not really because I can't but because my son can't stand it when anyone sings along to the radio or the band... but for this movie the kids and the hubby weren't there - kids went on their own, and the hubby wasn't up for it for some reason I don't recall, so my best friend and I went without hubby...good for us, he might have taken a dim view of seat bopping.

When you said “big hit by indigenous band” I knew it was Redbone. I loved “Come and Get Your Love,” when i first heard them at 14. Later on in life I married a Pueblo/Navaho man and introduced him to the band bc he had never heard of them. Extremely proud of my Native American family. Thank you for covering this little known, but amazing band. ❤

This is awesome! I'm part Cherokee. My dad was like a quarter away from being full-blooded (RIP). My patriarchal line comes from a Chief named Redbird. I've heard this song a zillion times, but I never knew they were Native Americans. Great video as always Prof!🙏❤️🙏🤟😜🤟

@@4Youalone3 No problem! Dies his last name happen to be Sizemore? Chief Redbird married a woman with the last name Sizemore, and the Cherokee takes the matriarchal name. That's my last name. We all come from the hills of Kentucky and Tennessee in the Appalachians. I was born in Clay County KY, and there's a small part of it called Redbird. I was born in Redbird hospital, which has long gone now

I was born in 1970, so all 70's music are the soundtrack of my childhood, along with a lot of the 60's music as well, and now I'm proud to assure that this song in particular is in the soundtrack of my kids' childhood soundtrack.... The first time I heard this song was probably the group being on American Bandstand and then it was on the radio a lot (west Texas was a little behind either coast with popular hits). Really enjoyed their enthusiasm when performing. As always, you round out the info on their entire catalog and the group members. And I just love you sharing memories about your dad.

In the past 15 years my youngest daughter and I sing it at the local Karaoke night. We always bring the house down. She has the same ability to scat and improvise making it always unique every time. Hey, Professor! What a damn great review of Redbone's greatest song ever! I was feelin' down today, with lot's of stress on my mind, when out of the blue, your KZfaq video notification popped-up. After watching it completely to the end, I was lifted in spirit and started to feel much better. That great song from the wonderful Redbone Band really did the trick for me! Now, that song is on replay in my mind, constantly hummin' along to the title verse: "Come and Get your Love!" That Sitar instrument run through the Leslie amp, made famous initially with those vintage Hammond Organs, was pure genius! I really love you're always excellent reviews about bands, their musicians, and all the songs that you talk about...You are a consummate Pro at you're Craft! Love ya, Man! How can you not love this classic, absolutely love that innovative guitar sound and riff. Growing up in the 70's Come And Get Your Love was on the radio at various times. I never followed the band but having a number of 70's compilations it was always a song I knew. I remember the first time I saw Blues Brothers 2000 where they used The Witch Queen.... at the end of the movie. I fell in love with that song and I like it more than Come and Get.... Thanks for the insight into the history of the band Professor, always great to get more history of music. Thanks.
