cool video, but I think the only advantage you have on loose ground like mud, sand or snow where otherwise the normal axle would brake. The portals increase the center of gravity and you tilt more easily. That the stones fit all under the pumpkin can also be made with riding technique. The original Unimog is also intended for muddy fields and woods. if it gets too steep, the one with the highest center of gravity tilts first, unless you're too narrow.

Nice vid! Great job on close ups of what we want to see. I like the looks of the axles, but I would like to see a bit more material on the axle tubes and especially on the lower shock mounts. Did it look like the brass beef tubes would still fit? I have some in my stock Gen7 axles.

Yeah, so far they’ve held up great, just put brushless power through them and they took it. Castle 5700kv on 3S. Redcat is working on metal parts for these including brass. Some parts do look a bit weak but they have not broken yet.

After seeing how strong the TRX4 axles are , everyone is going to compare the Redcat to them. But I really like the direction Redcat is going....they are definitely bringing their A-Game. Great review and test. When are you going to test the unsensored Kratos Six? Tom was thinking about sending me one not too long ago and must have thought against it.

yeah the trx axles are built better and way stronger but these would be totally awesome in a C1 truck. Tom has an unsensored Kratos 6 motor?

Exocaged RC. I suggested a stainless steel gear or to change it to a finer pitch(shallower tooth root) so there can be more meat where the axle is.
@ExocagedRC6 жыл бұрын
Yeah I’d prefer a rib on one side of the gear to tie in the teeth and better material. A good tool grade steel would probably be enough to take lots of abuse using the current tooth profile design.

@keithwhisman5 жыл бұрын
I really really want to get a crawler now. Can you get super grippy form fitting tires so they don’t just spin out and actually grab like real tires with low air pressure do?
@ExocagedRC5 жыл бұрын
Yes you sure can, in fact with 2-Stage foams you can go further than you can with real trucks. The outside tread can be soft and conformal and the sidewalls can be stiff to prevent tire roll. One thing about these scale trucks is even the brushed ones have at least 1000 scale horsepower and brushless is way way higher so they can and will spin any tire you can put on it.
@zackbean6797Ай бұрын
I know this is an old video but does anyone know if anyone makes the portal axles for the gen 7 that are actually available and good quality? Every where i have looked they either are on back order or the ones that are available are very bad quality.

Another great video..Just wondering like you said about the main drive gear strength in a portal setup?? More parts to break?? also the C-Hub is it part of the portal housing?? I went with Aluminum SCX10 Axles for my Gen 7 Sport..they are much better than stock.. Having Fun RCing ✌️ 😎👍
@ExocagedRC5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, The chubs are bolted on with 3 screws, redcat is already working on a new top gear.
@bobzilla9p05 жыл бұрын
I thought about SCX10's but instead put in brass beef tubes, SCX10 aluminum C-hubs (elongated the mounting hole on the C-hub to work), and redcat high clearance steering kit. I could get a full 50 degree turning but the tires rub the spring on the shock. I dialed back servo for 43-44ish. Much better than stock, stronger, and nice weight down low. I was thinking about the TRX4 sport axles then these got announced. I am very pleased with my redcat products and would like to support the company (2 Gen7 pros and Everst 16 for scale ATV build).
@TerraQuestRC6 жыл бұрын
going to be a whole lot easier to mount up than what I did, MST MPA's, should be cheaper to do as well. Didn't have the speed cut like that though. I like to crawl so not such a big deal and can always gear change the pinion/spur and use 3s if you want more stock speed. How was the steering affected? All in all, I say it is a good move for Redcat.
@ExocagedRC6 жыл бұрын
Steering was awesome compared to the stock one. Yeah my next drive is tomorrow with 22/44 gearing so let’s hope they live through that. Also yeah they did a great job on retrofitting these into an existing truck without jacking it up. The reduction in the portals is what makes them good, if the mst have no portal reduction then I doubt they will ever be in any of my trucks.
@TerraQuestRC6 жыл бұрын
just rechecked, nope.. no gear reduction in the MST. I did re pinion it down though. I run 8 cell NiMH 5000mah for the extra weight up front, the additional voltage made it rollover too much if doing high speed turns so I pinioned down to 12t.
@ExocagedRC6 жыл бұрын
you can change the pinion in the axle?
@TerraQuestRC6 жыл бұрын
sorry, no.. I re pinioned the motor to 12t. I was concerned as well about the top gear in the Redcat, see someone did break it. If some brass portal covers come out and C hubs, definitely see this as the better option than using MST MPA's. Also have to go to a shorter shock with the MST's, the lower shock mount is on top of the axle. Still its not a modification I regret doing.

Man at 4:14 look at the rollout, it appears that the overdrive is backwards. You should switch the diff gears front to rear, I could be nutz
@anthonymacaluso14885 жыл бұрын
That's also why when you went in reverse it acted like it was digging but the wrong way
@ExocagedRC5 жыл бұрын
I was just fooling around. At this point the front had the new portal axle in there at about 6.18-1 and the rear was still stock at just under 3-1. This was just to see how it would react.

They are high steer by design. I saw a guy selling a lightly used set with the upgrade portal gears for $75 in a Gen7 group on Facebook. Not sure if it’s still up
@CarminesRCTipsandTricks5 жыл бұрын
I hope they WORK!!! 👍👍 Good, thorough assembly Video. These were definitely Designed more for Scalers and Crawlers, than Bashers.... Speed wasn't the main concern. I'd recommend staying with the Stock Axles if anyone needs Speed. For hardcore Crawlers, the reduction at the Axle (less Axle twist that way), are a Godsend!! Cain't wait to get mine... but there's at least one thing that needs addressing with the "Beta" Axles. The Panhard Mount makes it nearly impossible to get the right front Shock on. I do believe that Redcat will fix that, and maybe even larger Bearings and machined gears in the Portals.
@ExocagedRC5 жыл бұрын
So far mine are working great, even survived brushless, check my other videos.

Always nice to see company’s trying to improve or keep up with the game.. But by the time you buy a gen7 and these axles your almost at a sport trx4.. That in which I’d pick trx4 over this set up. On shelf parts everywhere better turn radius fast speed possible with the portal axles.

Slop in the driveline makes it look like that, the rear has tighter tolerances due to less moving parts so it is usually first to pull in either direction.
