This is a tool use example only. Proper installation requires REDI-Sensor to be installed in wheel/tire assembly and pressurized.

Sean, Redi-Sensors are fascinating technically and I'm very keen to come to grips with them, but some of the terminology is confusing to people steeped in IT concepts. Does "unlocking" kind of mean write-enabling? How do the sensors re-lock? Also, if the sensors are installed but not configured, do they automatically hunt through their protocol list, or would they effectively just default to the first protocol?

REDI-Sensor is a preprogrammed multi-application sensor. There is no programming capability in the sensor. The protocols are written to the sensors memory during production. Triggering the sensor with a tool compatible with REDI-Sensor (over 30 tools are), tells the sensor what vehicle it is being installed on and then the sensor does the rest to configure itself to the vehicle. The process of Unlocking is done if the triggering was done incorrectly or not at all. Unlocking (a command from a compatible tool) basically places the sensor back to the original state so the process can be done again. Some vehicles have triggering modules in the vehicle and this process can be done by the vehicle automatically (referred to as Auto-Relearn).

@@tpmsdr Thanks, Sean! Re-interpreting for myself: REDI-Sensors are self-configuring units that are "ready to learn" in response to a vehicle-specific trigger, either via Auto-Relearn or a capable tool. They are not actually being "programmed" or "coded" in the classic sense, as there is no user-addressable memory. Do I have that right now?

@@ericpircher I do not think that is 100% correct. Please contact Continental directly.

@@tpmsdr I think it's going to have to do for me as a way of conceptualizing it. Your explanation was very helpful.

It can read the sensor after it is configured with a compatible tool but it cannot configure the sensor. us.continental-aftermarket.com/autodiagnos/ www.redi-sensor.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/REDI-Senor_TPMS-Tools_2023_V2.pdf

I appreciate this video but I have to say, your marketing department is playing sleight of hand here. They don't need to be programmed but they need to be "Unlocked" or "configured" with a relatively high-end TPMS tool. The best line in the video @1:34, "Go to program even though we're not programming". Does that pass the laugh test for anyone?

Unfortunately, Continental does not control where the tool manufacturers place the ability to configure the REDI-Sensor. Tool manufacturers want REDI-Sensor compatibility, and this is their only place in a tool that will allow them to configure the sensor. With a tool from Continental you don’t have to go to the program menu because the sensor is configured during the trigger process. Not all manufacturers are compatible with all sensors. Some tool manufactures are only compatible with their aftermarket sensor and OE sensors. But that is their choice.

@@tpmsdr There's a pretty subtle difference between programming and configuration in the context of a TPMS sensor. Both programming and "configuration" require a write-capable TPMS tool which makes your minimum tool cost ~$700 vs a $200 tool that works on other TPMS sensors that don't require programming. From an installer's perspective, the time and tooling involved are the same albeit a fully programmable sensor is more flexible.

So its not a redi sensor. U have to haveva reprogramming tool. False advertising. The old ones u just installed and did the relearn

REDI-Sensor is a preprogrammed multi-application TPMS sensor. They do not need to be programmed, you trigger the sensor after installation in the wheel and then perform the vehicle relearn. Regardless of the sensor being used, you should trigger the sensor to verify correct operation and then perform the vehicle relearn procedure.

@@Randomgearhead letting the air out is a vehicle specific procedure designed for OE sensors, direct fit sensors, or a programmable sensor that has been programmed or a configurable sensor that has been configured. The Next Generation REDI-Sensors must be triggered with a compatible TPMS tool (over 30 tools are compatible). They do not need programmed but need triggered. It does not say they don’t need triggered, it says they do not need programmed. Best practice is to trigger a sensor and then perform the vehicle relearn. More than happy to speak with you on the phone if you like. Please call our tech line 800-265-1818 and ask to speak with Sean.

@@RandomgearheadNo. That Autel tool only programs Autel sensors and can trigger OE sensors. It can trigger any other brand sensor as long as the sensor has been programmed or configured with a compatible tool.
