Many people commenting don't know much about how older diesels worked. I'll admit I don't know everything but I've owned over 40 vehicles and equipment with diesels on my farm and this is exactly how you started all of the older ones even when -30c and never suffered engine damage. Diesels come with heavy duty starters for a reason. Pedal to the floor, and if it's sputtering keep cranking until it starts unless it doesn't start within about 45 seconds to 1 min, then let the starter cool. If it is giving you no signs of starting after 10 seconds of cranking then yes, don't keep cranking as you're likely gelled up. (I've gotten bad winter blend diesel batches that have done that before) Granted, if you have a coolant heater plug in, ether injection option, glow plugs, or grid heaters USE them it if possible. That engine was used in a lot of generators and made to start at full throttle in extreme conditions. Either way, that 4TB will out last you. Anyways, love that truck and Cummins. Thanks for sharing!

I disagree! As a former diesel engine builder, this is how you destroy a starter! If you crank it, get a few fires in the cylinders, stop, and wait 30 seconds, and try again, you will allow those frozen pistons to thaw and grow in size. ( Yes They do shrink). Patiences Grass hopper!

Stick a small pen torch on low in the intake for about a minute and then try cranking it. It works and wont burn up the starter.
@ctdieselnut
@ctdieselnut 2 жыл бұрын
If theres no grid heater or glow plugs, a second long shot of either goes a long way. Cranking past 10 seconds shortens the life of the battery, the alternator that has to replace that huge loss of battery power, and the most effected, the starter due to heat. I live in the northeast, I get it. Dont tell me this the way its supposed to be, though. Not the end of the world, and that's a cool rig btw.

Don't get me wrong: I am very happy with every liter of toxic diesel gas, but what comes out of this is not enough. Hopefully there was still that nice smell to that very little bit of smoke that did come out! It's fantastic that the exhaust itself was also filmed. We want to see and smell the smoke as soon as possible as soon as it is made, so beautifully filmed!

As long as the glow plugs work, 7.3's start almost like a gasser. No glow plugs, hard starting. Below 20f, all diesels sound broken for a minute or two. I have owned all of the big 3. I had a 7.3 that the glow plugs were burnt, a tiny shot of either fired it very quick. Literally like a half a second long shot was all it took in the cold. Btw, powerstroke 7.3s or any modern diesel after 1995, the accelerator pedal trick doesn't work as well as the mechanical diesels where the pedal is opening a valve to flow more fuel. Electronic systems widen the injector pulse width, and some ECM's wont allow that until after it has fired.
