I remember watching this game. I was Phillies and Athletics fan. It was at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia. The Phillies fans booed the Reds players when they introduced. The Reds were used to Phillies fans and laughed about it. In the end the Reds showed why they were there.

I grew up a huge Big Red Machine fan in Louisville. Was visiting a friend in Richmond, KY and just so happened that while I was there, their church group booked a trip, a double header at Riverfront vs Pittsburg. The next month, I was visiting my grand folks who lived 10 minutes west of Aurora,IN and destiny struck again. Their church booked a double headed to the game at Riverfront vs the Phillies. The Reds swept the Pirates and won the first game for a split vs Philadelphia. Talk about being in the right place at the right time. Oh man!! I knew those ‘75 snd ‘76 teams were really good but it wasn’t till some 30 years later to realize what I saw and was was then. I still don’t believe it but these teams could pretty much do it all. The pitching staff always got a bad rap but by no means is such an assessment fair. Don Gullet 109-50 lifetime. Gary Nolan: Look up his numbers. Borbon’s win/ loss is statistically top 50 all time. Rubber arm, great middle relief. The closers, the team batting averages and I could go on. My mind continues to be blown. Thank you Cincinnati Reds for making my formative years so wonderful. I salute you all!!

The Cincinnati Reds were freaking awesome back then. They simply DID NOT beat themselves. They were fundamentally sound in all aspects of baseball. I was a 12 year old kid at the time and expected the Reds to win every game. No lead was insurmountable to that team. Why did free agency have to come along in 1976 and ruin baseball? Players don't stay with the same team for their entire careers no more. I wish we could go back in time to relive these special moments in sports history.

I think Ken Sr. was better. Not taking a thing away from Ken Griffey, Jr. but I'd rather have 7 division titles, 5 pennants, and 3 World Championships than 600 + home runs for lousy teams. Ken Griffey, Sr. played for the Reds from 1973-81 and 1987-90. Sr. hit for a good average, could steal bases, and played very good defense for some really great teams.

I'm still mad at my dad for not taking me to Big Red Machine games in 75 & 76. And starting in 77, I lived across the street from the most World Series Champion winning Red of All time = the Reds Trainer Larry Starr.)

The Rwds starting 8 were an All Star team. In the 77 All Star game 7 of the 8 starters made the team. All except CF Geronimo. All he did was win a Gold Glove and vat .309. They just couldn't send all 8 to the game.

And Perez made the '77 All-Star Game as a Montreal Expo. I still say that trading him and reliever Will McEnaney to the Expos for Woodie Fryman and Dale Murray is the worst trade the Reds ever made, with the possible exception of Frank Robinson to the Orioles for Milt Pappas, Jack Baldschun, and Dick Simpson. At least Pappas did have a winning record for the Reds. Fryman and Murray were terrible.

I just checked: Tony Perez did not make the All-Star Game with the Expos. But he deserved to make the ASG with them.

If you look at Catfish Hunters all-star record. He gave up 4 all-star homers over the years. He appeared in 6 games. It's a record. A am- azing negative stat for great a HOF pitcher.Crazy!

I attended this All Star Game as a kid. The thing I remember is how relaxed the National League looked during warmups and batting practice. Almost felt like they knew they were superior to the AL…

So of the Great 8, only Tony Perez and Cesar Geronimo are the only two position players NOT in this all-star game. And Perez should have been there. Cesar was an amazing center-fielder, just didn't hit much.
