Her Majesty The Queen, along with members of the Royal family, paid tribute to those who have served in Bomber Command. During World War II more than fifty-five thousand men lost their lives during bombing raids. In London's Green Park an historic ceremony was held to honour these brave men and other aircrew who have served in combat zones across the globe. At the heart of the ceremony The Queen unveilled a new memorial.

To allow even the crassest insults against these brave men who came from all over the world to join the RAF is a fitting tribute. From their sacrifice came the gift of free speech. Every negative comment about them I read, my admiration for this international band of brothers grows stronger.

I cannot believe there are not more views on this. In my view this memorial should have been build decades ago. I came here because I heard on the news that veterans face loosing their homes to pay for this. That news makes me feel physically sick. I would like to see a kickstarter campaign for the public to help pay and save these great men losing their homes. If video games can meet and exceed their requirements and raise millions I don't see why this couldnt.

Many thanks RedSquirrelCrossing for this upload. This memorial to our lads of Bomber Command was well overdue - but the wait was worth it. One of my relatives died in a Lancaster over Hamburg in 1944 - he was a tail gunner and his aircraft was hit directly by flak. I was priveledged to know one brave man who fought with RAF (New Zealand) No. 485 Squadron - Spitfires. He was an accredited rebuilder of RR Merlin engines here in NZ circa 1970 through early 1990's - my channel is my memorial to him.

At last! My dear, sweet father, F/O Wilfred James "Jim" Cowen, Bomber Command, has been recognized for giving his life to the country he loved so dearly.

The reason I approve comments is to weed out the foul language and other immature trolling type comments. I very much agree with freedom of speech.

These wonderful old men know what a gift, life and freedom is. To see in their eyes the memory of friends and comrades who gave up their lives makes me value our country's freedom and honour the memory of those who lived and died.

A Wonderful sculpture. I think I would like to go there to get a better look at it. Awesome. It doesnt matter that it was not done before. Being done now, shows they are STILL REMEMBERED and honoured. And the sculpture will look AWESOME for always.

I am staggered by the number of men killed serving in the RAF Bomber Command. Most of whom were very young, and never had the chance to even really live life to the fullest that I enjoy in the United States, We should all pause to remember these fine young men, their families and give them our heartfelt respect, prayers and honor them by living a good and decent life. God save the Queen!

Judging by the criticism made by a very tiny minority of bomber commands actions it is interesting to be reminded that the ignorant and the moronic still survive thankfully in miniscule numbers, bit like their intelligence level. That they are free to make such comments is a perfect acknowledgement of the success of those very brave men and women in aiding the defeat of evil tyrants and thank God or them and for their colleagues from all of the other allied nations involved.

i agree that its possibe that some germans will see this is a very negative light , but i think people have the wrong end of the stick , the memorial is not commemorating the bombing strategy or methods ,its commemorating the 50,000 airmen who died following orders and doing their duty. regards..marty

i think its outrageous that bomber command should NOT have this recognition , i know its superficial now to say the germans began this kind of bombing war on civilians in the great war ,with the paris gun and the gotha and zeppelin raids, but it was total war and both sides did everything they could to overcome the enemy, they were young men following orders of the people above and the died horrific deaths and suffered horrific wounds , my father was RAF though not bomber command.....marty

regarding sir Arthur Harris , general Arnold commander of the US army air forces has a memorial dedicated to him and a postage stamp issued in the great americans" series , the b-29 raids on japan were , as i know far more devastating then the bombing over europe and even the atomic bombs , i dont think there was any serious issues with the r/ship between the us and japan over this.

Long overdue but clearly overcompensating. Compare it with the cenotaph. It has a simple design, not a triumphant one. It honours all who fell not just this nation's. It is unsigned, this has the names of donors prominently inscribed. Private Eye's christmas edition 2012 does a good appraisal of it.

These men put their lives on the line to do the job they had to do, NO ONE is saying there shouldn't be memorials to those civilians of all countries killed. I would also support the Germans building a memorial to their bombers, the men of both sides displayed greater bravery than future generations and I think it is criminal to ignore this part of history. Those who choose to forget or ignore the past are condemned to repeat it

Approval of showing your post is quite a different thing from me approving of your post. Your post is showing, it was subject to my approval like all others. Move along now, there's nothing else to discuss here.

A monument for Arthur Harris in 1990 and now a memorial for his accomplices. The message will be understood in Germany and define the relations between Great Britain and Germany in future.
