Reduce Ram Pump Sound with Insulation and Barrel

Can you reduce the sound of the ram pump by putting insulation inside a barrel and covering the pump? Some people do not like the sound of the ram pump cycling and would like to reduce the volume of the waste valve click. In this video I take fiberglass insulation and place it in bags to keep it dry. Then I install a 55 gallon barrel to keep the insulation together. I use a sound meter app on my phone to test the volume.

How about putting pool noodle over the intake pipe? I mean, to insulate the Shockwave. But that would be kinda expensive. So, something that readily available that can dampened the vibration would work. Like burying the pipe? I don't know whether it will work or not, but it deserves to be tested. I hope this will helps.

For me, I don't mind the sound. It's far enough from my ears and the sound of the creek running masks the click. Also the inversquare law is in effect. You'll find as you mover farther away form the pump, the perceived sound gets quieter soon to be quieter that the surrounding ambient sound of where you are standing. As for a telling of where it is for theft concerns, a rifle will work well for that. Don't forget to shout, "get off my front lawn!"

Install sound deadening material...possibly spray or stick on for automotive use...to the inside of the barrel. Then do this once more to a barrel over the initial barrel. The sound will decrease significantly. The residual sound will likely be due to space between bottom of barrel and ground. This could be solved by slightly burying the barrel, cutting into where needed around the piping.

Mass instead of fluff will deaden the sound. Try making a pump-house enclosure around it with the extra cinder blocks you have from taking down the dam wall. That's why a lot of home well pumps are inside a cinderblock dog-house, the cement blocks do a great job of keeping sound from penetration. You might also try a little pump-house of your left-over 2x lumber from the new workshop.

I would cover it with a large mock rock. I like metal screen covered with cans of foam and then cement for the finished layer.

Check out packed sound attenuators that are used on HVAC systems. That will help with the waste valve noise. The only reasonable solution that I can think of for the drive pipe is to bury it.

I have a 80 gallon 2 stage air compressor working on the other side of my office and I used some sound board from home Depot. Comes in sheets and works amazing. I can barely hear my compressor running.

decoupling the compressor from the floor can make a huge difference too. If you can feel the vibration in your feet when the compressor is running its worth doing.

The next thing I would try is to get a frequency meter and then find out exactly what frequencies that the ram pump is generating, then use that to design a sound baffle targeting those measured frequencies. You also want to isolate the sound containment device from the pump so that any physical transfer of sound is harder to achieve. in the same way that the sound is travelling along both pipes. For the pipes, I'd bury them.

Hi Seth l, love your channel. You might try to isolate the valve with a rubber coupling. The hard pvc is possibly amplifying the click. Also can the feed tube be made of rubber instead of pvc? Love these experiments Maybe just short piece of rubber pipe just before the the pump Bill Nichols

You need to put it inside styrofoam box, inside other dampened box. The intake and output also need to be flexible, like rubber or silicone.

Try spring loaded PVC check valves. I think the half inch ones have a 2.5 lb spring. For more water, use a slide valve or the homemade one at this video. RAM PUMP VALVE COMPARISON - why the swing check valve is so useless
