Love this I did a similar design - I started with a lemon yellow and masked out the blue section - I pulled a yellow first layer with my whites carved out. I then would unmask the blue section and masked my red section (which is yellow) and pulled a blue print Now I’ve got a pure blue (cyan coloured actually) and a green mix of my lemon yellow and cyan blue - made a Jamaican lime colour from the cyan blue and lemon yellow Now I pull the red section and mask my blue and green sections - I used a deep red colour which resulted in a red pushed toward the orange side of red as a result of red mixed with first layer lemon yellow. Then I finish with my black outlines. Voila … une maison extraordinaire Thank you.

Thank you for taking the time to create this video, it is very informative. My question: what kind of marker do you use to go over the pencil marks on the lino that will not wash away when you wash off each printing ink? Does it interfere with the printing ink at all?
@FrankCurkovic
@FrankCurkovic 3 ай бұрын
Hi, the marker should be a permanent marker like a Sharpie, not a water based one. The marker will not affect the print. Good luck!
@jamesanthony5874

Took me almost to the end to make the connection that, if you're doing multiple copies, you need to print them all in a sort of assembly line where all of the blue, then all of the red, then all of the green, then all of the black, get's printed before moving on to the next color. No room for mixup there.
@FrankCurkovic
@FrankCurkovic 2 жыл бұрын
You are correct. Some use a different lino piece for each layer too, similar to stamping.

In this case where your blue is just one area and it's surrounded by white, would it make sense to only charge that section of the matrix? Or is it better to always charge the whole thing for some reason?
@stephenk.donnelly9034
@stephenk.donnelly9034 2 жыл бұрын
Oh I guess in this case you would need to whole surface inked in order to have an image that is easy to align with for your registration?
@FrankCurkovic
@FrankCurkovic 2 жыл бұрын
You could technically only ink the section you want. Your registration will still work as you are aligning the corners of the block, not the ink.

A question. One of the things I've heard about linocut is that you only get so many copies before the linoleum degrades too far to get a good print from the stamp. In your experience, how many could you get with a 4 + black print like this?
@FrankCurkovic
@FrankCurkovic 2 жыл бұрын
Hmm...the most I have tried is 20 and didn't have issues. I did wash the lino periodically to prevent build up.

What if you make 25 prints and then later decide you want more? Since the first three color areas have since been removed you can’t get them back. Wouldn’t it be better to make 4 plates so you can print as many as you’d like? Just curious. :)
@FrankCurkovic
@FrankCurkovic 3 жыл бұрын
I did make 5 copies at each stage of printing. You could make separate lino blocks for each colour if you wish, but it's not reductive printing then. On the plus side, if you did use additional lino for each colour, you would be able to go back and make additional prints in the future if you wished.

Okay so if you were doing multiple prints would you instead of doing one, on each inking do multiple sheets at a time with each color. Because you are carving as you go, you can't go back and do it over again right. So if you wanted to do a limited edition of 25 prints you would have to do each color 25 times on different sheets.
@devinmichaelroberts9954
@devinmichaelroberts9954 5 жыл бұрын
Also why apply the blue to the whole panel and not just the section that was blue, it turned the green into a black and the red into a dark purplish red. Do you have to apply each color to the whole panel or something?
@devinmichaelroberts9954
@devinmichaelroberts9954 5 жыл бұрын
Couldn't you just ink the lino with all 4 colors and do the print in one shot. Apply blue ink to the blue part, red to the red part etc. Does anyone ever do that?
@FrankCurkovic
@FrankCurkovic 3 жыл бұрын
Correct. I did make 5 copies at each stage of printing. You could make separate lino blocks for each colour if you wish, but it's not reductive printing then. Looks like a fun experiment but isn't the whole point of a print that you can make more than one copy? This method only allows for 1 print. Why not carve out 4 lino blocks (1 outline-black&white- and 3 colored)?
@FrankCurkovic
@FrankCurkovic 3 жыл бұрын

I'm afraid that this entirely misses the point of reductive linocut. The process is best exemplified by Picasso's brilliant use of building exciting forms which are not fully realized until the final color. In fact, I am not aware of any other artist who has exploited and revealed the full genius of this technique.
