In this video we explain how to care for your Redwood Bonsai. Watering, pruning, fertilizing - all these topics are discussed. Keeping a (Dawn) Redwood tree (Metasequoia and Sequoia bonsai) alive is not a difficult task, but there are a few things you should be aware of. For more information, also check:

Bonsai trees are planted in small pots with minimal space for water and nutrient reserves. That means you need to water and fertilize your tree regularly. Make sure your Bonsai gets plenty of light, water, and fertilize when needed and your tree is sure to thrive!

You don't have to worry about root rot with Metasequoia. I have grown them for years in very soggy soil similar to Bald Cypress with no problems at all. You can't over water them and they love fertilizer. I haven't tried but I believe you could grow them in standing water just like Bald Cypress.

I agree. In summer I put a plate of water underneath and it roots into it

what substrate do you use for them ? iv'e seen people use 100% akadama, 100% coco fiber, a mix of both, or akadama with some special bonsai soil, etc. Idk what to use tbh I must admit i like some organic soil with moss

@@caraxes3862 I just use peat moss and top soil. Needs very little drainage and this stays moist.

@@robbiemillard4173 oh ok ! i thought drainage was important to prevent roots rot, but yeah i guess little drainage is logic since this tree loves water, thx for your answer

I love the Dawn Redwood. I’m looking forward to pruning my 2 1/2 year old DR which I grew from seed this coming spring! They germinate from seed pretty well, I want to try air layering mine as well at some point!

You can actually grow dawn redwoods in an aquarium. I had several that thrived for years, about as bushy as the video but a much larger trunks. The trick is to start it from seed in a net pot and hang it off the aquarium with bonsai wire. As the tree grows taller lower it farther into the water until it touches bottom. They will put roots out like crazy that way though. They will still go dormant too just a shorter period. Once they are adjusted though you cannot replant them in a pot, itll kill them every time from my experiences. Other than that they are pretty healthy overall that way. Dont know if fish matter, all mine did have small fish in the tanks but i dont think its a requirement
