Let's talk about the fascinating world of NBA scouting and take a closer look at Kentucky's Reed Sheppard, a player defying the norms and challenging the analytics game. Despite his unassuming appearance and lack of explosive athleticism, Sheppard's extraordinary stats have left scouts scratching their heads, pondering his potential impact in the NBA. With a shooting accuracy surpassing college legends and a defensive prowess that could make him an all-star, Sheppard represents the age-old debate of metrics versus intuition.

If you really watch Sheppard, he is a sneaky good athlete. Watch his head/eyes. He sees everything and even knows where people outside his field of vision are on the court. If you think he lacks strength, look at the 70-foot chest passes he throws as outlet passes. He is going to make everyone else on his team better for 10 years or more barring injury.

I agree with this. Reed went to my high school and i got to watch his dad play pickup games in one of the church gyms in my hometown. That being said Jeff was way out of his prime but he still had some of that explosiveness that reed doesn't necessarily show all the time. Reed does however have some of the best spacial awareness and anticipation that Ive ever seen in a college player which should negate some of that missing top .001% athleticism. I'd say the wildest thing out of this is he has his moms game. She was a total badass in her days at kentucky.

While Reed is not the explosive blue chip athlete that his dad was (I first watched Jeff win the high school dunk contest at the Boston Shootout back in the day), he is a very good athlete, otherwise he wouldn't be doing what he's doing at Kentucky. While he does have tremendous skill levels, let's all understand that athleticism is not just speed and vertical leaping ability, BUT ALSO vision, agility, hand-eye coordination, power, stamina, endurance, strength, balance, and coordination.

Thanks for saving me the effort of spelling that out. As a long-time Utah Jazz fan, I'm very familiar with the commonplaces and stereotypes people use to avoid accepting a players' demonstrated abilities. Wouldn't mind if the Jazz snookered the league again, like they did in 85 and 86 when they stupidly drafted a 6'1" unathletic white kid and a muscular small-school forward with no skills.

@marcwilliams3692
@marcwilliams3692 6 күн бұрын
He has the vertical leaping ability but his first step THUS FAR has been limited and that hurts your value as an offensive player. He doesn't have the quick twitch burst and he isnt particularly adept at absorbing contact to make his strength usable. From what I seen he DOES lack the core strength that at times hurts his ability to dribble under pressure. It's fair to say he is an average athlete (by nba standards) who is undersized for the smallest postion on the court
@JohnnyD99999
@JohnnyD99999 6 күн бұрын
@@marcwilliams3692 42” vertical- highest at the combine. Shows the explosiveness. Thats fast twitch muscles right there. The other thing that demonstrates that is the shuttle run and cone drills. Which at the NFL combine- white athletes hold all the records - see WR’s Jeff Maehl and Kevin Kasper. So I’m sure if they did that at the NBA Combine also, he was at the top of the list too. Wonder what Luka and Jokic’s numbers were- doesn’t seem to matter as they are the 2 best players in the NBA the last 3-4 years.

@@JohnnyD99999 I said he is a good vertical athlete. I ALSO said his first step leaves alot to be desired, he has trouble consistently getting open off a live dribble at the college level that is a problem that tends to project to the nba. Jokic and luka aren't 6"2 and are both solid athletes their balance body control strength and ABILITY TO ABSORB CONTACT are other worldly luka doesn't have issues getting into open space because he is shifty while he isnt particularly fast he can start and stop REALLY WELL. Luka was an mvp in the Euroleague as a teenager comparing him to a role player on a college team is super disrespectful

IDK. I just saw a clip from the game vs Miss State where he blocked a 3 pt shot with a jump that's got to be somewhere around 38" - 39" . His first step is pretty decent, he's got very good agility and exceptional body control. He might not be a superquick or uberexplosive athlete like a Ja Morant or Fox but the statement about him being unathletic is 100% racial bias. There are many guards in the NBA with similar or lesser athletic abilities. He's a bit short for the SG position, and doesn't seem to have the freakish wingspan guys like Donovan Mitchell or Eric Bledsoe have to make up for it but the potential to be a solid NBA player is there.

The statement was made that they're not saying Reed will get good open 3's in the NBA. I'm pointing out that he doesn't have to. If he forces a strong non-switching guard at all times then he's earning his spot on the court. Just put him on a team that continually has two players who each command double teams. Then add Reed. At that point the other two guys will frequently be wide open or the main scorers will just score over and over again. That is a big value.

Shepherd reminds me of cross between Steph Curry and Mark Price. Like Curry, his shot is pure, and he’s ready to fire right away. He doesn’t move around the same way as Steph but he can dash to a spot and fire the rock. He reminds me of Mark Price, back in the day who had that first quick step. But I get it, he doesn’t fit the stereotypical NBA athlete. He looks fine to me and his anticipation skills on defense seem phenomenal. That doesn’t always translate when one jumps up a level. He's certainly not quick but he's proven he can move fast with drives to the basket. I don't think there's anything unathletic about the way he plays, I just see a calmness about his game. Look back and watch Ja Morant and Steph Curry in the NCAA tournament. They were in control and very rarely did anything in a hurry. People were also concerned about Ja's handles and Steph's strength. These elite college guards use what they've got and know how to avoid exiting their comfort zones/ limitations. Obviously Reed hasn't even been to the tournament yet, so there's no telling what kind of company he'll be in, but he is certainly a high iq guard with ridiculous potential.

He's the best, he's been the best, so how could you not have someone like him on every team? There's (4) white RB prospects in this year's draft. They're already being talked down. They did the opposite w Black QB's. Basketball believe it or not, is doing better than football. Just look at this year's NCAA All American teams and player of the year (again), Cooper Flagg being the #1 high school player, Doncic and Jokic cemented in the top 3-5 NBA players, with Sabonis in the top 8-10. Let's just see how things pan out in the draft come June...

Thing is he can’t create a shot. Once it’s scouted he hits open 3’s. Just like the last two games he’s been silent. It’s over with once he’s scouted. He doesn’t have nba handles nor athleticism. Not big enough to play shooting guard.
