For this episode, we drove to Miami, Florida to visit Julian Sprung of Two Little Fishies. In his office, he sat down with us and we talked anything and everything about calcium hydroxide or better known as kalkwasser and how this old school method of sustaining calcium and alkalinity can benefit us in our reef keeping and how many experts and gurus in the hobbies are still using this method and why.

Some years ago I bought his books," The Reef Aquarium", Delbeek and Sprung published 1994. These books have given me such a wonderful opportunity to look at the reef keeping hobby through the eyes of experts in the field. I'd love to sit down and chat with Julian over a cup of coffee. I live in Australia so that might be difficult!

Is it OK to use Kalk in My ATO ..I do not have a high demand so 2.5 tbs in 5 gallons ..than I use a power head to mix it ..I do leave the left over in botom than re fill and add 2.5 tbs again Is this OK ?

Anthony Novello yes, that is perfectly fine and you don't even have to have powerhead to mix it. You can just stir it.

I’ve been using kalk in an ATO for years and have had really good results with it - it lowered my maintenance time significantly and the corals showed me that it was definitely working for them. Since the kalk will settle in an ATO and clog up the pump, I took the pump and super glued it to a plastic cap that I took off a spray bottle so that the pump doesn’t sit in the settled powder. If it starts accumulating too much over time, a wet dry vac will get it out just fine 👍🏼 It also helps keep phosphates out along with my GFO

I mean LEDs light ocean revive t247 is that good light for coral
