It is nice of Alex Honnold to call Adam Ondra the best in the world, but he is being humble here. Ondra is the best in his discipline -- roped up on impossibly difficult boulder problems. Alex Honnold is the undisputed king of the free solo. Caldwell is the best big wall free climber. There is room for all of them. For all the non climbers (like me) who went to see "Free Solo" -- Alex is the most compelling for the obvious reason; he faces imminent death. You can't compete with that level of risk. Aesthetically, the rope-less climb is beautiful, primitive, elemental...and Alex knows all this. It's not why he does it, but it's why we watch it.
@stephenr80
@stephenr80 5 жыл бұрын
As a climber you respect honnold more than anyone. But you do not have to want to watch him. On the other side we love to see ondra & co sending stupidly hard lines. Honnold stuff is to far from anybody climbing.
@greenie62
@greenie62 5 жыл бұрын
Certainly there is 'room for all of them' but...strictly in the context of climbing that Honnold is referring to(not mountaineering/alpinism), yes, Ondra is, almost, unequivocally the best climber. Even after the beta was figured it took Tommy n Kevin quite some time to do the pitches, it took Ondra, with almost zero Valley climbing experience, about a week. Not trying to knit pick. I love Honnold and in many ways agree with you, but Im also tired of seeing Ondras insanity attenuated. Its different, buts its just as next-level...FWIW, For a 'non-climber' you have a decent amount of knowledge. Props on that!

Adam is an elite lead climber, boulderer, and big wall climber. He sent the dawn wall insanely quick. Of course he had tommy's beta but the physical climbing was retardedly fast compared to tommy and kevin. "It is nice of Alex Honnold to call Adam Ondra the best in the world, but he is being humble here" he's really not being humble. Adam really is the best climber in the world. There is no way around it. Honnold has countless projects that may never be repeated and are insanely futuristic, but ondra is hands down a better climber. I don't know where there are so many people new to climbing that keep saying honnold is the "best climber ever".

I'm not a fan of speed climbing at all, but think the community needs to have more of an open mind. We all sound like a bunch of pretentious pricks. As long as people are climbing and having fun I have no problem with it. As for the olympics, they definitely deserve to have each individual discipline. I think lead climbing and bouldering could possibly be combined for the first appearance in the olympics, but speed climbing is its own deal and should not be grouped together. It is so radically different it needs its own medal. Swimming has like a hundred different medals and that sport is incredibly boring. Same with track. They don't make runners run 10 different events and then hand out one medal at the end. Hopefully climbing does well at the olympics and in the future there will be different disciplines. I know thats gonna be the only sport im gonna be watching.

I agree that they shouldn't have grouped 3 disciplines of climbing into a single cumulative comp. I mean swimmers get so many individual events in the Olympics. But I think the reality is that this is a trial run for climbing as it debuts in the Olympics. Hopefully, it gains more traction, and in future Olympics, they split up the events.
@gwakamoley
@gwakamoley 5 жыл бұрын
I agree completely, but as I understand it this was the situation As a demonstration sport (1st year) there was a limit to the amount of medals they were allotted. So the options were either: A. They only do speed climbing because even though it's not really what most climbers see climbing as, it's probably the event that will catch the most eyes. B. They have the climbers do all 3, giving a chance to show off all aspects of climbing while keeping to the 1 medal rule. The climbing regulatory body obviously felt B was the better option and are banking on it being successful enough that they can come back with separate events for the next summer games.

Go to a rock gym and try climbing for yourself. It's all about problem solving and tweaking your moves to get it just right. Speed climbing is the same route and holds no matter where you go, so it's really only comparable to the 100 meter dash, where the rest of climbing is so much more complex.
