Panel discussion about the true nature versus media portrayals of the mission and the work of the CIA featuring showrunners from FX's The Americans
ABOUT THE EVENT
Merging the overt world of Hollywood with the covert mission of the CIA, this panel seeks to demystify the CIA's mission by comparing what's seen on TV to what happens in reality. Former CIA officers will join the acclaimed creator and actors from FX's The Americans on-stage for a lively discussion about the facts vs. fiction of espionage, CIA tradecraft, and living under cover.
Moderated by Joe Weisberg, former CIA officer and creator of FX's “The Americans”
Originally recorded June 2018.
Panelists:
Keri Russell, actress portraying Elizabeth Jennings on FX’s The Americans
Martha Peterson, former CIA officer and author of the book “The Widow Spy”
Mark Kelton, former Chief of CIA's Counterintelligence Center
Matthew Rhys, actor portraying Phillip Jennings on FX's The Americans
Costa Ronin, actor portraying Oleg Burov on FX's The Americans

I can't believe how think Matthew's Welch accent is in real life. His American accent on the show was flawless.

I’m with you on this. Philip and Stan created a sad and tragic friendship. In the infamous revelation scene it was clear how little Philip was truly invested in the relationship, and that fact only enhanced the horror that nearly consumed and destroyed Stan. Elizabeth was fascinating to me, as it was achingly clear how her real heart was entombed in ‘ice,’ so to speak. She became quite frightening when those masks of affability dropped. That was no small feat for the actress. You could she was a cold hearted KGB assassin. When Philip’s masks dropped he looked empty and sad.

Great series- never get tired of watching it. So much nuance and depth in the characters. Any show that can make you sympathetic to cold blooded killers who are enemy spies is pretty brilliant.

The best TV series of all time ! I know nothing lasts forever and I think it ended pretty well, but I miss it a lot ! What about Henry & Page ? A sort of "The Americans II"... Henry as an FBI agent chasing her sister Page, an undercover KGB (FSB) agent, but he does not know about her, once he thinks she moved to the USSR with her parents. And she has to deal with the tough fact that she may fight against her brother. That would be awesome !

Funny how the standards of competence to be a CIA agent is so much higher than to be on The Supreme Court, to be a congressperson or Senator, or even President of the USA.

While I enjoyed the show emensely - and couldn't stop watching - I'm disappointed in several loose ends. One involves Stan, one involves E & P. (1) While I understand that we leave Stan with the suggestion that the woman he's now living with may be another plant, I don't like leaving the whole Gorbachev issue unresolved, especially since Stan has now been told by two Russians he knows well. At the least, he should have sent the info on to State. (2) How can E & P return to Russia? For all they know, the Central Comm will be triumphant over Gorbachev and surely Claudia will have informed the Central Comm of E's betrayal.

I am surprised that no one asked if Keri and Matthew could really beat up most people. They must have had to undergo training in martial arts, to make it look good during all those fights.

One thing that bugs me a bit about this interview with the CIA case workers, is that they steer far afield of telling how they know perfectly well how to kill a person at close range with their hands, much like Philip did to the KGB officer in the 1st episode. They're highly trained in hand-to-hand combat. I wonder why they did that?

Conspiracy2Riot "The next war with Russia will yield more favorable results..." ? Have you checked in with the war in Ukraine lately? Yeah, we're guilty of too much bling and consumerism, but we have led the way (along with NATO) in supplying military aid to Ukraine, as well as moral support. Russia is the aggressor and is now the leading fascist nation in the world. Not an enviable record!

i loved this show. was sad it ended but on a really fitting note, as the USSR fell to capitalism. what a terrible moment for the soviet citizens. elizabeth and phillip were stellar examples of patriots doing a bang up job while raising a family in the shallow, bling, consumerist/materialist culture of america during a radical time in history. i wish it'd gone a dif direction...but the next war w/ Russia will yield more favorable results. the US is an empire in decline.

I wanted to see Elizabeth reaction to the fall of the USSR, I wanted to see Phillip interact with Martha in Moscow, see Oleg return and hoped Stan would visit Russia in the late 90s with Page and Henry, maybe just as Putin is sworn in as president foreshadowing the second cold war we find ourselves in
